Paul Madden introduces this vessel designed and built by Ulstein in accordance with the demanding requirements for silent operation in all oceans as a seismic research ship. The vessel features a compact and efficient layout, providing a comprehensive arrangement of mechanical outfitting, with a highly flexible, redundant and powerful propulsion and machinery package. It is Ice-Class C for operation in ice.
The vessel is built to Det norske Veritas Class + A1, Ice-C. E0, Heldk., and to international rules and regulations as applicable for the subject type of vessel. Further the vessel satisfies IMO Res. A 468 (XII) as a general maximum noise level in laboratories and related areas. Special consideration has been taken from design stage and through out the building program in order to minimize hydroacoustic noise generated by the vessel. All major rotating machinery installations are resiliently mounted, and vibration characteristics of the steel structure and hull is made without interference from machinery and propulsion plant.
The voluminous interior is set up to accommodate 56 crew and staff in spaces that can easily be converted to include a massive owner's suite and large guest suites. The Toy & Tenders garage is over 8,000 s.f. with high overhead to house a variety of specialized equipment.

Love it. Ulstein is one of my favourite shipbuilders and Bergen make great engines. Can't wait to see the finished product.

This is a very large and fuel hungry beast with a huge environmental footprint. I prefer the Cardama 242 vessel you identified in Vigo. With several explorer yachts now for sale including Ragnar, Planet Nine, Yersin and Simon Fraser, to sell a conversion, you need to differentiate your product. For the rich, toys and luxury are a given but few want to be labeled as carbon polluters. I think you want to be able to visit the Arctic and Antarctic without leaving a footprint. The conversion recycles the donor boat and small things like bulk water rather than bottled plastic leave an impression. I would recommend multiple fuel saving devices including bulbous bow, hull vane, air lubrication, ecoprofin, new efficient propellers, diesel electric technology, shaft generators, solar power, inverter battery banks, and seawing kite propulsion. Some of these ideas have long payback times but all push reduction of fossil fuels. They are more than green washing. While fuel saving pays for capital,,the wealthy seldom count every gas receipt. However, they all are aware of global warming and of their image. A vessel on the leading edge of fuel saving devices can then also use 10% biofuels to further reduce carbon emissions. Lastly an onboard lab could collect water samples from around the world in concert with an oceanography institute.

When was it built? Last refit? Are those drawings available?

Hi Jeff. It was built in 1993 at Ulstein. The GA's I saw on board were dated 2004, which is probably when they installed larger heli-deck and did other mods.

So what’s the range at 12kts? Coz at 1,400,000 litres of diesel that’s just under what Oceanographer held…

A quick calculation indicates that at 110 gph that would take you around the earth with plenty of fuel left over.

But what's the cost of the ship, minus any money made by selling the 'scrap', and systems not used anymore being sold to another shipyard (if any) vs. Having a new hull built by Damen, Oceanco, Lurssen..although I don't think Damen would build a vessel that big or capable. But Damen touts their support ships are 25% the cost of a comparable sized yacht

Removing the drums and hydraulics is expensive and so the deal with the scrappers is likely to be that they do a careful removal in exchange for the metal. The difference between a top European yacht build and a conversion this size with ice-class is likely to be €50+ million. If you are starting with a new off-the-rack Damen commercial hull, you are still paying for all the upgrades and will end up spending far more than on a conversion. An additional comment - Ulstein hulls are of same quality as the other European yacht brands, and often the steel fabrication is from the same shipyards in Eastern Europe.

@@IncredibleShips thank you for taking the time to reply. I 'heard',,meaning saw a video, where a rep for Damen saying that getting a toy hauler and having it outfitted out to be your personal yacht, albeit with smaller rooms of course, but still better than the rooms on some smaller yachts. The cost is 25% of a regular yacht of the same size, plus you can carry all your toys and even fuel bladders for added range on top of the insane range already built in. I just wondered if that was true. I know the husband of the S/V Pink Gin would stay aboard the toy carrier and the wife stayed on the sailing yacht. He had it outfitted out pretty well. I could see that as an alternative, but not now Damen has the SeaXplorers and CdM has the FLEXPLORER and even Dunya, Alias, and Lynx got in on the toy carrier game. Although CdM and Lynx woukd probably be my first choice.

how much do u estimate for a first class conversion?
@IncredibleShips
@IncredibleShips Жыл бұрын
That's open to interpretation. In general, a conversion can run between $10-20 million, depending very much on the level of interior finish. If you go to a snazzy yacht yard, add 50%.
