Pets were allowed in the USSR, it's absurd to claim that they were not or that owning pets was discouraged. That's bunk. The Russian Siberian Cat is considered the national cat of Russia. They are a rather popular bread and that's not a new trend.

To me out of all cat breeds, Siberians have the best personalities, they are very affectionate, sociable and highly intelligent, which is why I got 2 of them, and I've had a few different breeds of cats before this and fell in love with the siberian breed after I gotten my first siberian. Siberian cat owners knows what I'm talking about.

My parents had a Norwegian forest cat before I was born. She was beautiful, loving and an incredible hunter (on one occasion they came down to find 8 rabbits lined up on the kitchen floor in one night, and one on the doormat which was too big for her to drag in through the cat-flap!! She could literally have fed the family). We had a total of 9 other cats over the course of my lifetime, and they still say that she was the best cat they've ever known, and there were none like her.

I have learned so much new and unexpected info about Russian people in your video, despite the fact that I am Russian myself. Like a pearl "People were discouraged from owing animals as pets, so Siberian cats went unnoticed" during soviet period. I saw with my own eyes that many soviet families had pets, including Siberian cats. My grandmother owned a Siberian cat and loved it. There was another problem in soviet union, since many families were poor and were not able to afford pets, however, Siberian cats were never "unnoticed" in Russia and perfectly survived soviet period without help of American breeders.

I adopted my little baby at Petsmart years ago...in the description it stated he is a siamese mix...except he is 100 percent a siberian kitty ...everyone loves him, he greets everyone who comes into our home and they all want to catnap him because he is so beautiful, friendly and social...we call him kitchen cat because whenever we are in the kitchen, he is there with us, keeping us company and talking to us.. he loves jumping into everything, especially boxes and laundry baskets, he will run to inspect any door he hears opening, he wrestles, cuddles and grooms our other cats...he's just magickal and beautiful inside and outside. We are so lucky to have Casper in our lives and we just discovered, after 10 years of having him that he is a siberian cat 😻

We adopted a kitten of my sister's cat here on Russia, she wasn't Siberian at all. But the kitten turned out to be a beautiful bushy and large Siberian cat with a typical face of a Siberian cat, long tail and naughty personality. He probably looks like his father - cat. He is 1,5 years old but still very playfull and he has a good appetite.

People had pets in the USSR. Im guessing for those that lived in the cities and towns, they kept theirs in their apartments. People in the villages might have kept their dogs outside mostly even in winter and cats might have gone inside and out but others can comment the differences for pets in urban vs rural areas

Same, except maybe ours was a little older when he came to us, another homed cat brought him into our garden, he had been abandoned by his owners who have since abandoned another pair of young cats. He was so furry you could not tell he was male, and so averse to people because he had been badly treated. He came to us as a visitor for a year and then decided he would like to live with us. He is great company and loves a cuddle, but sometimes decides he wants to hunt our hands! He will be becoming intersex quite soon! He is the most personable cat I have owned, and delighted to rehome him, but very fed up with the people who think cats are a status symbol and Chuck them out when they get bored. Our chap has some very dog like tendencies… hope yours makes as great a pet as ours does. Only complaint, it is hard to find a cat tray long enough for him, he has really grown a lot since he came to us.

We live in the UK and have a three year old Siberian that we got from one of the few registered Siberian breeders in the country. We are actually getting a second one in around 6 weeks when he has been with the mother for long enough. Our first Siberian girl cost us £750, which was a very reasonable cost considering that she has multiple grand champions on her pedigree certificate! Due to the pandemic, increasing food/vet costs and some other factors with the breeder, our new boy is costing us £950, but we completely understand her reasoning after she took the time to explain. In general, healthy, genuine pedigree Siberians can cost between £700-£2000 depending on whether they are "pet quality" or "show quality". Finding one for around 750-1000 is considered the norm.

what a stupidity is that about cats forbidden in the SU?! It's a fact that russians are the most cat-loving nation of the world. Cats have always been there at least as mousers, but mostly as a family members. And siberians were a would say a symbol of a fat beloved russian pet.

My local shelprominter calls all large long-haired cats Maine Coons. I started watching videos trying to figure out if she is aMaine Coon o something else. Her muzzle isn't prominent enough so I started looking at NFC and aSFC v Indies. I Came to the conclusion that she was more NFC than theoghersz then Maine Coon. I had her genetics tested and she is only 1.3% NFC. She is 11% SFC, 7% MC, and 3.5% Ragdoll. She is about 3.3% Russian Blue, 2.5% Hemilaian, 2% Savannah, and 2% Egyptian Mau.

After watching your video, it looks like he’s more likely a Siberian - he has the characteristic dip in the nose profile you mention.
