They are the perfect everything cat. Wonderful, extraordinary, highly intelligent, highly loving, loyal and protective, easy to leash and command train, good with other pets, gentle and kind to humans yet fiercely prey driven awesome hunting cats, one could not ask for a better animal companion than a Norwegian FC.

Make your wegie happy by harness training them. They LOVE walks and being outside, and because they’re so agreeable and intelligent, training them to walk on a leash is a breeze. My buff colored, double coated with a white tipped cotton ball fluffy tail, wegie Tanner (with us 19 years before he passed 6 years ago. I still miss him every single day) would run to me and chirp continuously as soon I picked up his leash and harness. He’d get so excited knowing he was going on a walk. Tanner, who was our gorgeous, extremely smart, extremely kind, extremely strong and sturdy boned 20 pounds of fit not fat baby, was possibly the greatest cat that ever lived. Firstly, he loved everyone. And everyone loved him. It was impossible not too. And never, not once in his whole life, did he go outside the litter box, scratch or bite or fight a person or another pet, or cut up furniture or belongings. He was super affectionate and greeted everyone at the door, and loved to lay on every guest’s feet, stranger or not, and rub his scent on their shoes by bunting with the side of his mouth and face, and purrrrrrrr; so loudly you couldn’t believe it was coming from him. Even dog people who didn’t generally like cats loved Tanner. Cause he was more like a dog, but smarter 😂, more than any cat I’ve ever known. I’ve had many wonderful , smart, loving cats in my life. But Tanner was extra special; he was also extremely beautiful and his coat was so thick and so soft too. He was Blond with big green eyes. I used to call him the Brad Pitt of cats 😂. He came into my life by accident actually. His Mom was a rescue I took in from an over run shelter I foster for, after they’d just rescued a bunch of wegies from a kitten mill abuse home. She was pregnant at the time too but we didn’t know that. She had four beautiful wonderful kittens, of which Tanner was the runt. The fact that he’d be 20 pounds eventually was very unexpected 😂. Anyway I found great homes for Mama and three of the four kittens (they were all great, loving cats including the Mom we named Founder, cause we “found her” pregnant 😂) , and nobody adopted Tanner the runt. So he ended up a member of our family. And I’m so thankful that he did. I’ve had many wonderful cats my whole entire life (all rescues or strays, even as a child) and have known people who had great cats. But Tanner was simply the greatest cat I’ve ever known. God I miss him. I’m tearing up actually. Ok back to wegie facts. They’re also known for being great lovers of the outdoors (which is why it’s vital to leash train them or else they get sad and they WILL escape out the front door. And trust me they are faster than you could ever be. They are not content to only live inside four walls. They NEED to go outside. Leash train them to keep them safe though, don’t just let them run wild. They’re extremely curious and fearless and can get themselves seriously hurt). They LOVE climbing and being up high; on top of the refrigerator was a favorite perch of Tanners. They make for fierce hunters and are instinctually very predatory and will kill any prey animal they come across, yet they are the most loving, gentle, affectionate, protective, kind animal companion to humans that you could ever have. They love being brushed, are fastidious groomers and very clean, most love fish and many even like vegetables (Tanner loved tuna and salmon and peas and green beans which he’d get all as a special treat- but he generally disliked people food and loved his cat food. You’d never find a wegie trying to eat food on your plate when you turn your head. It’s just not a trait drive in them. They prefer their own bowl and food), are incredibly strong, are fiercely protective and loyal to their people and prefer sleeping with them and also guard over their people while they sleep (especially babies-Tanner grew up with my kids and watched over them his whole life), are calm and curious and love meeting new people, are good with other pets, love to play, like lots of affection and most like drinking from a running tap and even like physically being in water; I know Tanner did. He used to take showers with us, where he’d sit at the far end of the tub in the gentle spray and lick it off himself, and even lay down in the water 😂. He could also open doors, leap very high in the air and jump into your arms, catch anything flying or running (a mouse a bird or an insect, didn’t matter. None stood a chance around him), had 6 toes on each of his front paws, loved belly rubs, loved to go for visits to family and friend’s homes. I even taught him commands and he knew stay, sit, go (which meant run 😂), up, lay down, and jump down, he loved to ride in the car, was a therapy cat at Easter Seals for years, loved sleeping on his back, and loved to play fetch. I never even needed a carrier for him because being leashed trained and loving to ride in the car it was so easy to transport him. I’d walk right in Easter Seals with him on his leash and the people would get so excited to see him, and with a chirp he’d jump right in this one man’s lap who used a wheelchair and he’d wait by the door for him. They’d give each other lots of love and the man would drive his power wheelchair around to other people so they could pet Tanner who’d lay right in his lap. It was adorable ♥️ And I’d literally walk him into the vets office on his leash, and he’d lay in my lap or in the chair next to me like a person, the whole time purring and watching the other animals. And yes, he even loved his vet. The staff were just amazed by him 😂. The vet told me he was the most special, most wonderful cat he’d ever met in his entire career and that the Norwegian FC is truly a special and wonderful breed, one of the most unique and the most intelligent and loving of all breeds. Out of my whole life, Tanner remains one of the best and truest friends I’ve ever had. Miss him so much. I still dream about him sometimes, even all these many years later. When he passed, I went into months of depression. Cried every day. Our whole family was devastated. Still tear up sometimes when I think think about him cause I miss him so darn much. Grieved over him like I’d lost a family member; we all did. Because we all did. He was absolutely family. When I die, I hope almost more than anything, that he’s waiting on the other side for me. And I’ll get to see my dear friend and family member, and we’ll be together, once again. Love you Tan The Man. Forever in my ♥️

Tanner was such a wonderful cat. I also want to go out with my cat, but my vet told me not to go out because there is a cat epidemic in the neighborhood. I'm moving in the winter, I'll give it a try then. By the way, my cats hate leashes, so let me know if you have any good training methods.

@@NorwegianForestCats Most of the time your kitty just needs to get used to it. Here are some good tips I learned along the way, and from watching Jackson Galaxy (😂) who reinforced what I’d learned. All you need to do is change your kitties association with leashes. Here’s how you can change your cats’ association of a leash and harness to something good happening. Start by just putting the harness on him right before he is fed his very favorite, special food (for Tanner that was tuna) or gets treats, then letting him wear the harness around the house, so he can get used to the feel. Then Start putting the leash by the food bowl and give the special, most loved food, so he or her can sniff the leash and get used to it. Also it increases sight and smell recognition in that the leash always appears when the really good food comes out and is associated with good things. Then move to attaching the leash and just walking him in the house. If he likes treats, attach the leash, give a treat, walk a bit, give another treat. They may fight it a little, but don’t get discouraged, keep doing the same routine. Wegies are super smart. It won’t take long for him to get it, and figure out that the leash and harness are on his side 😂 then, once all of that is running smoothly, start by carrying him outside, sitting him down and just letting him sniff a bit and get used to being outside. In no time he will be chirping for the leash. I promise you all of it is worth it for the enjoyment and contentment your cat will have getting to go outside. Good luck!😻

2 years ago we found a cat living under a bush at my church. He was starving and it was coming winter quickly so my son and I got him in a container and took him to the vet. He was not claimed by anyone and had no chip so we adopted him. He has feline AIDS, which I never knew of till he came around. After some food and a good bath he was transformed into what looks like your multicolored cat in your video. He is very intelligent and a real baby to have. God knew he needed a home and we needed a second cat. Our orange tabby was not thrilled but he got over it. He is now 3 or 4 and is always ready to play or go outside in my 14 year old sons arms. Beauty and brains is a treat for our home. He will always have a home with us.

Toys are tricky when your dealing with Wegies. They're too smart for anything with a stick. Even the laser pointer got old once he realized that I was doing it. I found that catnip mice were his favorite. He would play by himself. Throwing them in the air, then jumping up and catching them. At the peak of his jump! I'd find those things everywhere. On the mantle, on the coffee table, Everywhere.

I have had many cats thru the years but she is very special. I love here dearly. She sleeps in the nook of my arm at night. The vet said she is over 12 years of age so I will treasure every moment with her.

I now have my second Wedgie that I Adopted from an S.P.C.A. SHELTER. His previous owner was a senior lady that passed. When they had searched the apartment he was hiding. As she had been ill , he was very matted and had to be shaved. The first month with us he was SO SO FRIGHTENED. HOWEVER, now what a completely HANDSOME BOY. HE actually gives me his front paws to trim his nails when he begins to catch them on things. A more docile cat 🐱 I have never seen. My other three cats accepted him immediately and they all groom each other. He has CLIMBED our big CHESTNUT TREE AND THEN CAME DOWN also ON his own without any concern. LOL 😂.

The Norwegian we have just decided to move in one day & never left. She just came in through the cat flap one day & decided she liked it here, so she packed her bags next door where she originally came from & that was it. The neighbours are quite happy about it too, so all is cool. There's nothing quite as funny as a cat with attitude. She gets on really well with our other cats too, but I think some of that is because she has much better climbing ability than they do, she's currently asleep on top of my wardrobe & she's adopted that spot because the other two cats we have can't get up there & it's warm & quiet up there too. At 4 years old she's very active at night so she'll be getting up soon to go off hunting in the woods next door to our house where it's full of rodents that she invariably brings in & executes, as cats love to do. We don't mind the mice & shrews too much but we do wish she'd leave the big fat rats outside, she's a very large cat though & seems to like her big game hunting. They all end up stone dead though, so hey ho.

Thanks for the great video! I found 2 "bonded" (brother and sister that must be adopted together) Norwegians at a shelter and have been researching. I've never owned a cat so I want to make sure it's right for me. Do you or any subscribers have important insight? The one video that made me nervous was the one that said, "Everyone will know you have cats because they shed heavily and their hair will always be all over your clothes." Also, I have a one bedroom condo that's about 1,050 sq feet so not certain that's enough space. I hear they grow large and continue to grow for 5 years and eat A LOT...

Thank you for visiting my channel. If you've never had a cat before, it's good to start by raising only one cat, but it's not bad to have two cats that are siblings. If you raise only one cat and bring one more later, the cats will fight for territory. And the bigger the space, the better, but more importantly, the vertical space is needed. According to the advice of veterinarians, it is best to make one cat tree for each one. That's because cats need space to be alone when they sleep well. I've had cats for less than two years, so I'm always watching them. But feel free to leave a comment if you need any help.
