I always knew one of my grandmothers family came from Sweden on my paternal side, but never guessed my maternal tribe is Sami. I am so thankful for documentaries like this so I can learn more about the people I come from. I would like to learn more about Sami shamanism and magic. I love the music and find it relaxing. It makes sense that my Sami grandmother consulted Mexican curanderas then when my father was a little boy. He wrote a book and one of his memories was visiting the shaman when I'll. Her family was offered citizenship in the USA in the early 1900's. She never told us a thing about her heritage ever. I found out by happenstance. I can lasso a horse!! Lol But I learned that here in Mexico where eventually I ended up growing up.

Alot of sami and sami ancestors are; and have been ashamed of their heritage, because of the oppression against sami people that happened for many years. Alot of sami in Norway didn't dare to speak their language because it often were followed up by being beaten up.

As well as the Christians forcefully wanted to make them believe in Christianity, so they strip away their religion and culture. Norway wanted them to speak Norwegian. So if you spoke the sami language, it was often followed up by being beat up. Many were too scared to admit they were sami's, and to this day, many kids are being bullied for being sami.

@@loffagood556 Thank you for your response. I'm sad, though. Based on family photos of my grandparents from the past, I didn't see where the Sami look any different than what I'm used to. I don't know if there is Sami in my distant heritage, but the facial features are very familiar. Even if they look different, though, I admire the strength of spirit, courage, and tenacity of the Sami. They have lived in the harshest environment on the planet and yet have a rich and beautiful culture. How sad that children are still being bullied for being Sami instead of being celebrated.

@@Melissa-YupMelissa The Sami are beautiful people however I was shocked to read they are much smaller than the other inhabitants of Scandinavia, and of Europe in general, he men on average 1.53 m tall, the women 1.47 m As an American angry we don't have the metric system.. That's like 4'10 tall for women and 5'4 for men.. It's a major contrast to be living besides the Tallest Caucasians in the world.. So I can see how they would be noticed right away..

To say you can "become Sámi" (2:48) by speaking our language, it not accurate in any way. You can never just become Sámi. To be registered with the Sámi parliament (Sámediggi) and vote in Sámi elections, you must have a parent or grandparent that spoke a Sámi language, and speak a Sámi language yourself and identify as culturally Sámi. There are people who self-identify as Sámi, but are not entitled to vote in Sámi parliamentary elections because of cultural erasure and ancestral shame. It's a tricky subject.

In order to become part of the Saami Parliamentary elections in Norway, you must declare that you regard yourselve as Saami (+ be / turn 18 in the election year), and who either a) have Saami as your home language; or b) has or has had a parent, grandparent or great-grandparent with Saami as their home language; or c) children of a person who is or has been in the electoral number may claim to be included in the electoral number.

unnaviellja That‘s right! You can never become a Sámi, if you don‘t have relatives, who are Sámi. And one thing is also not quite correct: The dog sledge isn‘t a typical Sámi mean of locomotion. In former times, Sámi people used reindeers to pull their sledges in Winter and also in summer reindeers were used for transport. Later the Sámi maybe adopted the possibility to use Huskys for transport, but this method comes more from Russia and Siberia. Of course, modern Sámi use snowmobiles and quadbikes to herd the reindeer.

I am Sapmi through my bloodline of my mother and my father. As far as I know you have to be born Sapmi as I was. I speak three dialects or Sapmi languages and just because someone speak my language shouldn't necessarily make them an instant Sapmi.

@Amalie Olsdatter You’re right, ”ski’s do not make an ethnic group”, but by studying the craftsmanship of the ski’s, carbon dating, comparing them to other findings and using other scientific methods we can tell the origins of the ski’s. This is how anthropology works and the same methods have been used on Norse findings. The 4-holed design, the shape of the ski’s, the ski-poles and the fact that they were built of reactionary pine wood totally sync up with findings of other Siberian/Uralic ski’s found in Fennoscandia, Northeast Europe and Siberia. The only known migrations from Siberia to central Sweden are constituted to the Uralic people and the same designs were still in use a some centuries ago by the Samic and Finnic groups. And this is were the goalpost has been moved. You’re using modern definitions of cultures to try to disprove my points, but not even staying true to this premise. The vikings who spread to the north (Hålogaland) around the 9th century are not culturally, linguistically and even genetically similar to modern Norwegians, but you still treat them as such. But i submit to your premise and i agree, since i believe you are your ancestors, even though they might differ from you in some ways, but let’s just keep the same energy towards the Sami. And again with these ridiculous claims about Norwegians being first in all of Norway, you will not find anyone that agrees with this. By studying hydronyms, toponyms, findings etc we know the old hunter-gatherer Sami, who needed huge areas of land to survive, inhabited areas all the way from Lake Ladoga to central Norway/Sweden almost 2000 years ago, i’m going to try to send you a map when i got the energy. This is when the Norse were still in Denmark and the southernmost parts of Scandinavia. Again, you can type in Kildin island in Russia, you will see how close it is to Norway and the Sami continuosly inhabited the island for over 2000 years (proved by carbon-dated findings of arrows etc.). This ancient ”siida” is the reason for the name of the ”Kildin Sami” language. And yes, northernmost Finnmark is a melting pot, but only for about less than a millenia. Kvens as we know them today (not those from ”Kvenland”) migrated from Finland starting from the 16th century and Norse people started to permanently inhabit the area way after the Viking age. Before that it was only Sami. Let’s take ”Ottar fra Hålogaland’s, the northernmost viking’s”, words: ”the only people north(east) of me are the ”Finna” (Sami) and the ”Cwena””. It's not weird. It is quite common for old, Norwegianized Sámis to be ashamed of their origins. It was imposed by the authorities in the young Norwegian state, which wanted to make everyone Norwegian. The Sami were deprived of their rights, the children were sent to boarding schools. There they were only allowed to speak Norwegian, even if they did not know a word of Norwegian. In order to buy land, the household had to speak Norwegian and at some point everyone was forced to change their name to a Norwegian name. This first happened in the areas furthest south, and along the coast. Later, the entire coast was exposed to the same. I grew up on the coast of Finnmark, and in my home village there was not a single Sami when I grew up. Later I realized that the vast majority of them were actually Sami.

Oldest sample of haplogroup N in the far north is from 1500s BCE and the proto-Sami most likely arrived between the bronze age and the transitional period into the iron age from 1500s to 500s BCE. 2000 years ago is more fitting for the ancestors of Finns, who arrived into Finland across the gulf of Finland and the Karelian isthmus from the south around the 1st to 5th centuries CE during the Finnic migrations.

One thing is that the Finnish and the Swedish terms lapp/lappalainen most likely do not share a common origin. The Finnish term lappa/lappalainen -> Lappi (Finnish name for Lapland) most likely originates from the archaic lappea word, which used to mean remote place or the edge of something meaning the Finnish terms most likely referred to the Sami (or any other semi-nomadic group in the far off wilderness, not necessarily Sami) as being people who lived in a remote place and the edge of the world to the settled Finns. This would mean that the Finnish term didn't have the connotation of them wearing "rags" for clothing. The name Lappi itself most likely didn't refer to what is Lapland in the modern day either due to most of Finland, especially the interior, outside of southern Finland and the western coastal regions being unsettled wilderness for a long stretch of Finnish history.

Sami culture belongs to a group of cultures that spans the entire circumpolar area and all the way down to South America. The Sami's trade routes ran mainly from west to east if you go back far enough in time. There are several common cultural markers, such as bear worship and the shaman's use of bird feathers.

The Finns call themself « Suomi », but deny that they have cultural and genetical relations with Sami people. Suomi and Sami are obviously from the same root. They are neighbors since thousands of years and their languages are attributed to the same branch/family. Finns and Sami peoples’ languages and culture originally from North Asia. Some remained proofs are: the tents are similar with those used by North Asian people and by Indian people; they have the Saman as religion and use saman drums... The original asian people have mixted with the european white people, the same history as the turkey and magyar peoples but two thousand years later.

Finn Wraith I had dinner with two engineers from Finland’s nuclear power station two years ago . They don’t think having relations with sami people. Maybe it’s that you finns know little about your own history far before the christianisation, but there were surely a popular/official desire to forget it, as neighbors of the powerful european civilisation. You are today definitively europeans except three things, your far history, your language and a part of your DNA.

Im finnish and think of the sami as one of our brothers, just not as close as the baltic sea finnic tribes since the sami are isolated in their extreme location and have evolved into a very different culture with hardly any outside influence, unlike us southern people who have very much influence (especially in language) from the outside powers who have colonized and ruled over us, those people that dont agree either dont really know the history of the uralic people or worship western culture and want to distance themselves from our true origins

My family is from Seljax Parish, Njorfjord, Norway, I live in the asshole of the earth now Detroit, Michigan, USA, although I do not know of any Saami in my heritage I do find the culture to be so amazing and hope all Sami people work hard to hold onto what's left of their culture, modernization will only further hurt it I think, I hope I'm wrong.
