2022 brings the centenary of the most influential horror film of all time, NOSFERATU.
100th Anniversary screenings of NOSFERATU in the UK & Ireland bit.ly/3vzyCzi
NOSFERATU (Masters of Cinema) Blu-ray Edition bit.ly/3gBiQv1
The turning point in the career of legendary director F.W. Murnau (SUNRISE, THE LAST LAUGH), the screen's first, albeit unauthorised adaptation of Bram Stoker's DRACULA (which itself celebrates its 125th Anniversary this year) features Max Schreck's unforgettable performance as the vampire Count Orlok, the most chilling portrayal of cadaverous evil in film history. Although a court order to destroy the film was successfully brought by Stoker's widow, some copies escaped, and subsequently gave the 20th century some of its defining images of supernatural terror and dread. A decades-long search for the best surviving material and a re-recording of the original score by Hans Erdmann now allows us to see the film exactly as it premiered 100 years ago.
A towering masterpiece whose legacy is truly incalculable, NOSFERATU remains as mesmerising - and haunting - as ever.

The thing that blows my mind the most about this film is how much of it was shot on-location. Film and the cameras that were used to shoot it were so temperamental, fragile, and the medium itself was still so new. They were dragging this equipment all around the German countryside shooting on dirt roads, at castle ruins, on ships and carriages. The logistics alone must've been a nightmare, and the risk of wasting or damaging film in the elements with unpredictable exposures. They wouldn't even be able to know what the shot footage looked like until they got back home.

The big question is, will we see a physical re-release, similar to the 90th anniversary edition of Metropolis? Perhaps this will get the UHD treatment?

Nosferatu is by far the best vampire movie in cinema history. The feel and the style of the movie is haunting and yet like a vampire it wants to pull you into Count Orlock’s spell. The guy himself Max Schreck was a creepy guy in real life. In that time many of the cast and producers even Max himself participated or belonged to a cult similar to the Freemasons but they dealt with witchcraft as well. Creepy shit huh.

Nine years on from the bluray release and I STILL can't get an explanation as to why the restoration had such bad image instability compared to the 2007 DVD version. When you pause and frame advance the bluray it bounces up and down constantly whereas the DVD was stationary as a rock. I know it's much lower resolution, but I'd prefer to stick with my old DVD as at least that doesn't judder like a 100 year old film - it actually feels like it could be made recently.

I heard recently back in the day, this movie was based on bram stoker's Dracula. Some of the images of this tralier reminds me of Francis coppla's dracula from 1992. I think the movie looks good, but I think Francis coppla's version is better.

Yes...you are correct! 'Nosferatu' is essentially Bram Stokers 'Dracula' with only names of characters and locations changed. Because of this, Stokers widow sued Murnau and his production company for copyright infringement, won the case, was ordered to pull the film from theaters, and to destroy all copies. He and the production company went "bankrupt" (so they didn't have to pay her). However, some copies survived, which is why we can watch it to this day. Every time a theatre was showing the film (in Europe), Stokers widow caught wind of it somehow and that copy was destroyed. Eventually the film made it to the USA and from there, it was easier to show and eventually faded into obscurity. Imagine if all prints had been destroyed, like so many other films at that time that we will never get to enjoy now?! It blows my mind that this beautiful piece of art would have been lost to history had it not been for a few good souls every now and then to protect and help preserve it. There are only a couple copies left in existence and one is definitely at the Smithsonian in DC.

The 1979 version of this film tried to use subtle performances and imagery to capture the horror of the first film and succeeded to a certain degree to erase the " cheesiness " of the silent and the perceived fast track of the old film which made the actors look like they were hopped up on speed. I would welcome you to watch both- back to back.
