It wasn't a scary film, but heaven is depicted as basically your own universe where you can do anything you'd like and hell is depicted as your own universe where everything goes terrible for you. For me, the scariest depiction of hell was in Jacob's Ladder. The dismembered body parts, the madhouse, the woman nursing a doll, etc. The "vibrating head" image has become a staple (or should I say cliché) of every horror movie since. Event Horizon takes second place -- though as I understand it, there was footage shot that was so disturbing it was decided to not include it in the finished product.

But if accept if you [accept your fate] you'll realize they're actually angels... Freeing you.' Just awesome filmmaking. @@drewpatterson8009 The Hollywood curse: great scenes must be cut (edit: by the suits, aka the investors) to accommodate the "average viewer" and their 90-120 min. projected attention span. That and their assumed lack of critical thinking and delicate sensibilities. They think they cannot afford to take "chances" asking an audience to connect dots or deal with a bleak, unexpected ending, bc it might alienate *some* viewers (even though it might captivate many more). The studios make movies (not films) by the formula 🌽: MOST BUTTS x MOST SEATS = GREAT SUCCESS > Content and originality, compelling & thought-provoking stories/characters. *Support independent filmmakers.*

Event Horizon had the scariest hell. The brief flashes you saw of it depicted a realm of pure psychopathy. You step through the gate and you're the worst version of yourself that you could ever imagine. Finding yourself within an instant trying to reach down your own throat to pull out your organs, while those nearby who have been there.... a while... already.... are engaging in weird, semi-sexual rituals with eachother's maggot infested, perpetually living body parts. At every turn, cruel, twisted machinations that seem purpose built to cause maximum pain in human beings, like industrial factory farm equipment, houses confused, enraged, terrified people as they scream and vomit blood eternally. And all the while, you're offered glimmers of visions of your loved ones being impaled right through, your most treasured friends and family brutally maimed and hewn to steaks. And there's nothing you can do to stop it. EVER. Even if you somehow escape back to our realm, this version of Hell comes with you.

Event Horizon is accidentally Warhammer 40K cannon. Many Warhammer fans consider it to be part of the lore. It was humanities first encounter with "the warp" when attempting space travel. It is literally the purest form of chaos. In the far future, humans use the warp to travel great distances through space. @themonsterunderyourbed9408 The Divine Comedy in the narrative poem by Dante Alighieri. Inferno is one of three sections, titled after the realms he traverses. Purgatory and Paradiso are the others. It's actually really good if you have the stomach for reading that style of writing similar to Shakespeare or one of the old versions of the Bible like Geneva, Naked, or original King James. The story is still cool in modernized versions but it loses it's soul.

There is a very dark and gruesome description of hell in a graphic novel, i think it´s the poem Angels Claws. Everything that has ever given you joy and pleasure is in abundance. The catch is that you can't feel any of it. Neither physically nor emotionally, because the good things like joy and pleasure are only on earth to lure you into hell. But as soon as you´re in it you experience that they don't exist there.

Huh. That's a rare one. Almost like Johnny The Homicidal Maniac's depiction of heaven. Nothing but row after row of wooden chairs, and it doesn't matter. There is no pain, no want, and no boredom, so you can just sit there forever without a problem in the, well, afterlife.

Where's the hallway of rooms of people being processed, the other staff, the other chambers? It's just this and Pinhead in his living room in a dinky house, and it seems like such a wasted idea

"Hell is your life gone wrong" makes the suffering intensely personal. Not just that it's images of their house in ruins or whatever, but that it's created entirely by their own will. Their spirits are given the power of a genie and all they do is hurt themselves as hard as they can. That idea resonated strongly with me. The movie couldn't (and shouldn't have) explore it to the fullest potential since it would have involved not just the house, but husband/kids/friends rendered into monsters, and situations a PG-13 movie could never depict..
@Hmongboi2289 ай бұрын
Hell I'm that movie is a reference to the classic poem "Dante's inferno." I also agree that the hell depicted in "What Dreams May Come" is unusually scary. The Xenobites from hellraiser aren't demons from Hell. They're from another dimension who people have called "Angels/Demons". They're just a weird collective who get off on pain as much as pleasure, since it gives them both a pleasure kick.
@schmerz0rn9 ай бұрын
No - the Cenobites (maybe you mean Xenomorphs - another universe) are in another dimension, but this dimension becomes what humans would call "hell" for them. Even the leader himself, in the movies called "Pinhead" describes the place to frank - the dimension "creates" the personal hell of the solver. As you may know not only the dimension changes. So the "leader" of the cenobites is practical the nameless, so called pinhead - but in the dimension the leader is he who gets called "the engineer" - It´s not "this one hot place full of flames" ... it´s what it needs to be for those who open the portal.
@anubis198019 ай бұрын
This is true in Hellraiser film canon/continuity. In Clive Barker's novels (The Hellbound Heart and The Scarlet Gospels) OTOH they are indeed from Hell, with Pinhead (aka Hell Priest) attempting to become the new Lord of Hell in Lucifer's absence, with extremely devastating consequences once he unintentionally resurrected the latter in the process, with God, Heaven and the angels also playing a role in The Scarlet Gospels.

@@datensenke The Hellbound Heart, the first Hellraiser book that Clive Barker wrote is great and I massively recommend it to anyone that finds the mythos in the movies interesting. The Scarlet Gospels was not nearly as serious as the first book, and it goes all in with the main characters entering Hell through one of Pinhead's doorways. But both of these books are SO. MUCH. The sad part is people who've had a fucked up life, maybe raised in the wrong crowd or have no other options, can go to hell just for being alive.
