My grandparents lived in the soviet union, grandma a scientist and grandpa worked with ship construction. They were happy in the soviet union and thank stalin for a great childhood, with education, fun and meaningful activities, support to build a family and a good life. "The great purge" happened, but it can not be blamed on Stalin alone. The NKVD (later KGB) was a corrupt police force within the police, former top people exploited the new and undeveloped buerocracy. Stalin got many reports, many were false, some were true. It is very hard to make a decision when you can not trust your secret police. Sometimes the NKVD acted alone and did not tell Stalin about what they did. How can the Soviet Union be called a faliure when it brought happiness to so many? And communism helped the USSR to develop from the renaissance to 2nd place in the world. Foreign sabotage and revisionism brought the country down.
