Nobody needs to become too nostalgic here. I feel like Japan is so consistent. A lot of the atmosphere in this video can still be felt today. Sure, many things have been modernized. The cars are newer, the karaoke microphone is now wireless and everyone has a smartphone. Many of the old wooden houses are gone. But still - you can experience most of what can be seen in the video today. I love that.

i live there a few years ago and had the same impression. japan seems to have peaked both culturally and construction wise around the mid 80s. the buildings are still big and impressive and the lights in kabukicho are still dazzling but you can see that many places are starting to show their age.

Japan entered a Golden Era and was a massive producer of products and manufacturing (this is pre-China global manufacturing boom we see today). The 80s in Japan incorporates a cumulation of over 20 years of recovery/rebuilding, their economic rebound and global presence on the world stage. They were really pushing their limits. It was only until the mid 90s that the economic bubble popped and they have floated into economic stagnation. Still through, if you travel or lived there you know how convenient and advanced Japan feels. It’s due mainly to a combination of overall cultural respect to one another’s space, privacy and property. PS: The continued use of paper newspapers, writing letters, etc is a cultural formality not a lack of technology or advancement. They choose to do it that way on purpose.
