Not 100 hp but still fast! VF-1 Budget Go Kart Build

Well we've all been waiting for it. The sway bar was the final step in creating the perfect budget Crosskart. Even though we are only working with about 16hp this thing is insanely fun. I immediately want to build a second with the same exact specifications so there can be some predator powered head to head fun where the driver decides his victory. The suspension is so smooth and steering is incredibly responsive and I haven't even fine tuned anything yet! I hope everyone's builds are going well! Enjoy the build.

What a blast! Anyone with some land can appreciate something that can be fun for all (many) ages that is reliable. You guys have a really nice place. That's partly why most of your audience could never do this... It's not easy when you don't even have a garage or a nice place to ride them.. I've built projects anyway and ran them up and down my block, and have had police over here way too many times. I put a 500cc Rotax engine on a cheap 2 seater chinese kart. I'd like to rebuild the rear like one of your karts... My son is 6 now, and It's time to get him in the shop and help build stuff. If you can get them hooked on the fabricating side of things early, they will be so very talented by the time they get out of school.

Thank you. I worked very hard for it. Before I had this place I rode public trail systems. $80 for a three year registration and $100 for a season pass. I’m not sure how to fix your complaint. Maybe build one in my driveway? A lot of my audience are building these btw…. I hope you get your stuff figured out so you can build and drive something.

This has inspired me to take the engine and transmission from my shaft driven motorcycle and build a cart around it won't happen until I have another motorcycle though cuz I still enjoy riding motorcycles

I was pleasantly surprised with the hf predator engine and I haven’t even done anything to squeeze more performance out of it. This is a very fun kart and it’s so simple I fell like I can do anything I want with it.

I am in the process of building mine! I'm almost to the point of being able to take it off the jig. I'm also going the Predator 459 route. I was wondering have you considered removing or at least bypassing the governor? I feel like it would be a very noticeable increase in power.

Awesome!! The governor doesn’t take away power, it just limits engine speed. You can use the cvt system to get the most out of the rev range without risking over revving and destroying your engine.

Have you ever thought about designing one of your machines for OHV trails 50" with? I would be very interested in that machine. It could open up another market/ product for your businesses.

Of course I’ve thought about it, if I still lived in Ohio where you have to have 50” width I would probably already have one done. The front suspension would definitely suffer from the a-arms being 5” shorter per side, but that’s part of the fun; figuring out solutions. Maybe a strut setup, or crossed a-arms like a ranger, or…

They are in the components list. But the front tires are actual crosskart race tires (18.5” diameter) from gpsoffroad and the rears are atv flat track tires made by sunf or kenda (22” diameter). You can get them on amazon. I run the flat track rears to not tear up my yard too badly and they make for really fun drifting.

Awesome - Kyle I am thinking of making one of these but 4 wheel drive using a polaris sportsman 850. I am 6 feet tall and 280 pounds... would you recommend using a VF1 with a 3 inch stretch or go with the XL having the 6inch stretch to accommodate the front drive assy?

Well it depends! I kind of designed the XL to fit a future awd setup so if that is your plan then…

NONE! It is that fast unmodded... I have some goodies for the engine and CVT to see if we can get some more. They always turn out faster than I think they will be.

It’s a stock harbor freight predator 459cc. I think 15.5 hp. I can’t wait to soup it up a bit.
