“Not a ‘Folk’ Tale” is a documentary- drama which aims to play on two different but complementary mediums of expression, i.e., art and filmmaking, with an aim to explore the definitions of Folk, culture, change, progress and more. The narrative is built around the Bajantris, who are ancestral artists that play music in the villages of Himachal as an act of devotion towards their local deity. They are an essential part of our heritage and provide valuable insights into our state’s ritualistic and religious realities, thus making them a critical case study for our film. But is this act just a service to God, or are these age-old customs rooted in oppressive social structures, is an inquiry this film makes. Some of the key emotions that our film explores are change, devotion, subjectivity, preservation, and interrogating questions like Who defines culture? Are phenomena like progress and preservation grey zones? What is local deities' role in constructing their reality?
Our film does not aim to reach any predetermined conclusions but seeks to represent the diversity of thought regarding something as perplexing and perpetual as culture. Hence, our final canvas board will be representative assimilation to navigate these cultural transitions.
