Thanks for y'all's advice everyone! Back in August 2024 I purchased this LTS and a Lew's CL SS for Season 8. I wanted to see how the Bates compares to the new shallow spool from Lew's. I'm not sponsored by either brand so no hidden agenda. Both reels were purchased with my own hard earned cash. No discounts were given either. My hope is that this is a fluke with the $400 reel. If the issue persists then it'll be a shame for needing the end user to correct the problem. At the price point for both reels, they should perform flawlessly when they're well taken care of. I'm reading in y'all's comments that this a common issue with baitcasters in cold and or warm weather. After fishing fulltime for 8 years, I have yet to experience this with a Shimano or Lew's. I mention these two brands because they're what I have used since going full time. I have since moved on from Shimano as Lew's baitcasters have performed better for me. Full disclosure, I was sponsored reels from Lew's for a two year period and I fell in love with the Custom Lite. Fast forward to present day, I'm no longer sponsored and I purchase all my reels. I take great care to not dunk or splash them while fishing the salt. I feel it's important for anyone who isn't a regular of the channel to have some context about me. Fishing is my profession, it's all I do on a daily and I have no other job to pull me away from the water.

Your spool slipping is actually due to your anti reverse bearing acting up, whether it due to the cold, humidity or water accidentally getting past the handle, super common in ALL bait casting reels. Take it down to your local repair shop and get it replaced, or next time you’re out on the water it will happen again. Regardless of how many times it doesn’t act up on you at the house. Don’t over think it bud

Mark, a few tips that might make your trip less miserable, you pulled up to the spot directly from the launch and spot lock yourself there facing the wind the whole time. What i would of done is gone around to the other side and kept your back to the wind. also to your left the deep water continues. if i were you i woud of also tried to work the drop offs of that channel and used that island to protect me from wind while doing it.

@reysalinas535710 сағат бұрын
Was causing the problem in your fishing Reel is that you're a one way clutch has grease on it and in cold weather grease is too thick not allowing the one way clutch to do his job. You would have to disassemble and remove the grease from the one way clutch.

For inshore, I have found that higher the pressure is over 1026 the less the fish bite. Around 1029, it shuts off almost entirely. The more the water temp dips under 60, the slower the fish bite. Literally, they will bite in slow motion LOL. Dead sticking top waters actually can work in these conditions as long as the pressure is not too high.

@alpie54717 сағат бұрын
Like others have said, anti-reverse clutch brng. Symptom is common, the rollers stick intermittently. "But it works inside my WARM house." Likely, you've got your rollers lubed (like I do mine, for protection), but just like your Procure out on water, it's gelled-up due to cold. Clean it thoroughly, and then try just a very light spritz of an aerosol type penetrating oil (ie, something lower viscosity than what might have been in it prior). See if that clears your issue - leave the assembled reel where it can get to about 40o, and test it.
@MDLRFishing17 сағат бұрын
Thanks for the info, it makes perfect sense and could be the issue. 👍
@alpie5477 сағат бұрын
@@MDLRFishing One guy's thoughts/experience: Just looked at your reel schematic, pretty standard, so this is an easy-enough fix that anyone can do quickly. If I had to guess, the OEM lube has gotten contaminated w/ enough s-w thru usage (it's inevitable, like others have written) that it's acting up and contributing to the sticking rollers on the one-way bearing. Probably time for a cleaning + light oil anyway (in my book, at least). L/P b-c's (Abu, Diawa, Shimano, Lews, 13F, etc etc) all suffer the same. Good thing, tho --- this isn't the end of the world. Changing gears: Bully on you for getting out there, pushing the envelope w/ the elements, in order to maybe pull a rabbit outta the hat. Protective eyewear wrap-arounds (me - Walmart $10 ambers w/ magnifiers) come in handy when it's like the North Atlantic. LOL

Are you sure the line is not spinning on the spool
@Southside11216 сағат бұрын
Thats why at this time of the year its good to go to the coves or cuts in a bayou to protect you from the wind btw do you have a link where you get your flats buggs
Is it possible that your line is slipping on the spool? If you pull on your line with your drag tightened up, does it slip?
@MDLRFishing17 сағат бұрын
No line slippage. That’s the first thing I checked. Cast as far as I could with the wind and pulled the remaining line off the spool. It only holds about 90-100 meters of the braid that I use. I reeled everything back in and still had the issue that you see in the video. Good thinking though, that always happens to my spinning reels.

@reysalinas535710 сағат бұрын
Your one way clutch should not have any grease at all. Because the needle bearings will stick with the grease, causing the clutch not to do his job.
@alpie5477 сағат бұрын
Agree on 'the use of grease' causing roller sticking (at least what might be commonly avail to most of us). I open up all my new reels before I spool them up, to make sure of proper lube, etc. And I've yet to find any L-P (regardless of brand) that doesn't have some kind of lube in these one-way brngs. Their lube doesn't make the rollers stick. Once I have to get into them to clean away contaminants, etc thru usage, I'll reapply a light reel oil, as a protectant...also keeps the action quieter, too. So far, I've not had cold-temp issues (I do fish in 40-45o air at times, happily less-often here in e cen Fla than TX), but if ever do, I'll step-down in the oil viscosity, with a light misting of aerosol oil. Cheers!

How do you like those simms flyweights? Thinking of getting a pair for duck hunting
@MDLRFishing18 сағат бұрын
They're good but only last about 2 to 3 seasons in the salt. The quick tie grommets on the ankles corrode exceptionally fast. The glue that holds the shoes together, separates after a few years. That being said, I have owned four pairs of them and will continue to buy them until I find something that will outperform them.

The day I went to Tackle Town in Rockport, the Bates rep had a full table of reels set up and was offering a great deal. The store does sell Bates so after his speal to me, I went over to the manager I know and asked his opinion. He quickly stated if it breaks you have to send it to CA for repair and that the gears were no where close to Shimano gears. I walked over and picked up 2 Shimano Tranx 150s and spooled them with 10lb Power Pro Super 8 Slick V2. A little harder to set up than my Calcutta at the start but knowing they are almost bullet proof to saltwater keeps me from all the extra cleaning and I can throw 1/16 Oz buggs jigs 50 plus feet with my Old 18 buoyancy 7ft lite fast action. Great rods.
