@@dtrips905 If it was anyone other than Adam or Jesse, I'd 100% agree. When it's your buddies you've known for years, I trust their judgement to know how far and how hard to push. I mean, neither one has tried to stop Steve from a "modified" LFR. It's like they know "you will be back" when it's the first game of the next season. They've only said "you have to do them", not how to do them. And at the end of the day, I think they all know that if Steve decides he doesn't want to do them anymore, they would support him. They've just done the friend math and know where this is going to end up.

I am not going to diagnose MM, but I can tell you from observation that it seems he's seriously impacted by a paralyzing fear of failure. Having a dad like his, I'm sure that played a role. He really needs a good sports psychologist if he's ever going to make it to the next competitive level.

Thank you! This is what I have been saying but I get blown up everytime. We know his dad has been way too involved, theres videos of Mitch being like 8 years old getting scolded as if it mattered. I wrote a report about the emotional abuse of junior hockey players and he likely got that, plus his Dad. It's sad and you can tell his mental health isn't okay

If anyone is interested in a movie on residential schools in Canada, check out the movie called Indian horse (2017). Just a heads up, it’s a very serious movie. Still, it does an excellent job at not only showcasing what life was like for these children but also shows how the survivor's life was forever affected. People tend to forget how recent these schools still existed the last closing in Canada; I believe 1996.

Last year he filled in on the first line and second line a lot and did very well. This year Keefe played him as a 3rd liner and a penalty killer. He had 23 goal season in the KHL before he signed with the leafs. I think he has a lot more upside then we think. Minnesota would appreciate him with Kaprizov

Many of the Plains Indigenous Peoples believed they were negotiating Treaties to SHARE the land. It was not a sale and this can be seen in their interpretations of the different Numbered treaties. I also have to think that the Pass System would have impacted any ability for an Indigenous Person to market any skills gained. If anyone wants to learn some of the histories of this time read "Clearing the Plains: Disease, Politics of Starvation, and the Loss of Aboriginal Life" by James William Daschuk. I also didn't know my grandfather's stories about surviving Shubenacadie residential school until about 20 years ago. Some of my cousins almost ended up in that hell, but their parents fought tooth and nail to keep them from suffering the same fate. My late sister, who was a musical playwright, took the issue by the horns and worked hard to raise awareness. She starred in Children of God, which premiered at NAC in Ottawa in 2017. It was about a Cree mother who fought to see her children, who were incarcerated, and the scars the surviving children dealt with as adults. A moving musical which hopefully will go back on the road after the Pandemic. She had worked tirelessly on her own musical with her partner Leslie Arden, called Starlight Tours, which had a successful run-through at Sheridan's program (where Come From Away was also workshopped) on the day she died.

I get the point but I disagree on trading the core pieces (unless it's favourable ofc). It may be too early for some to acknowledge, but there was progress on almost all ends --- steamrolled everyone in regular season, more engagement and commitment defensively.. Loosing to the Habs in 1st round is bad, but not something that can't be redeemed. It came down to the two individual mistakes in OT. It's a thin line between winning and loosing... Playoffs are all about matchups and adjustments - the Leafs didn't make any adjustment but I'd argue they didn't had much room to begin with... Too many similar "status quo" players i.e. Engvall, Mikheyev... In saying that, I would like Kyle to further diversify our depth.. More abrasive, mean, tough and able to wear down/annoy opponents - as opposed to betting on speed and... tenacity? And I don't think trading Mitch is a necessity here. All-in-all, I think the team (the core) is still heading down the right path and on the verge of something good. Cheers!

For all of his faults. At least Nylander plays the same no matter what the situation. they could be in a really close game in the playoffs or they could be getting completely destroyed and he still plays like Nylander. People say that he doesn’t care and while I don’t think that’s true if it is it actually might be an advantage in close games in the playoffs because he doesn’t get nervous and start making mistakes.

Here's a curve ball for you Leafs fans that you won't want to hear: If the Leafs trade away Marner who is Matthews' best friend, does this change his desire to re-sign with the Leafs in a few years when his contract is up?

@@motelbobby4104 It's more of a case of why would Matthews stay in Toronto at the end of his contract if it isn't even fun playing there? Toronto fans think people desperately want to play in Toronto, but it can be a brutal place to play. Mitch being there would be the one thing I would see offsetting his desire to leave.

I know these things are not comparable, but as a hockey fan from Espoo Finland I know very well what pain caused by a team that you love is. Our team was promoted to the SM-Liiga back in 1992. We had 2 final appearances (2008 and 2011), but then came 2016 and the team went bankrupt. A new team was quickly formed and they started at the 2nd tier of Finnish hockey system. Then came 2018, just 2 years after its creation the team went bankrupt. A new team was formed and this time we had to start at the 3rd tier of Finnish hockey system. After 2 strong years in the 3rd tier and being promoted to the 2nd tier the pandemic hits and the financial situation is dire... There is a silver lining to all this tho. The current management is very capable and the current team has gotten lots of support from Espoo trained players (of whom there are multiple in the NHL atm) and we did survive the pandemic season, even if barely. What I'm getting at with this is that, even if the team isn't performing, at least you have a team =) (and no I'm not trying to diminish your frustration and pain just tried to say that it could be worse)

Thank you guys for talking about residential schools. Something important to add - the schools may have closed, but the disparity continues. You mentioned the high rates of tuberculosis back then; this continues today! Indigenous people in Canada have almost 300 times the risk of getting TB than non-Indigenous people. There is a lack of adequate on-reserve housing, leading to crowding and increased transmission of infection. There can be significant restrictions on access to quality medical care. Some communities still do not have reliable access to clean drinking water. It's unbelievable to think that this can happen in Canada in 2021. If you're looking for a more meaningful way to get involved, contact your local MP. Write to the office of the Prime Minister. Advocate for change. As you said, we need more than thoughts and prayers, or a filter on our profile pictures.

As much as I'm enraged, I think you have to keep these guys. Mitch made me mad because he didn't score (assist, whatever), and when he doesn't for a while he fumbles the puck, and toe picks with a frequency unjustifiable for someone of his skill level. On top of that, he looked like he was going to cry game 5-7(put on your Brendan Gallagher face, you're still ahead). That doesn't sound like someone who doesn't care. that sounds like someone who needs a sports psychologist. If he gets his head together, he's a world beater. If he won't go to a sports psychologists, trade him immediately. Matthews made me frustrated a lot because he didn't score (SCORE DUDE SCORE WTF?). But he lead the first round in shots and was not a liability defensively in the least. He's not getting paid to be a Selke candidate, but this team should have been able to bang in one of his many rebounds in game 5, 6 or 7 so he had a chance to light up round two. He's too good to trade if he doesn't demand it. Rielly, Brodie were good and Campbell and Nylander (really) were very good. Tavares was decapitated and Muzzin was kneecapped. Freddy is out the door or maybe signing cheap if the flat cap and injury discourage other teams. Who do you get rid of from that group? Probably Marner. Who do you get rid of to make the team better? Probably nobody. These young men's failures are connected, in our collective hearts, to a history of almost infinite failure that stretches back to the dawn of time. Before they were born. before me and Jumbo Joe were born. Our pain is understandable. One of the goalies that last won the cup here wore palm aid in his hair instead of a mask on his face. Our dedication should be rewarded. These kids have been drafted to carry that weight, and no matter how many quadrillion dollars they get paid, it ain't easy. If they were Ducks, or Lighting, or not Leafs, or even had been less capable of overachieving in year one and two together themselves, an identical failure would be less catastrophic. They would still have years to do "the thing." I fear our collective anxiety is poisonous to whomever dons the blue and white, and if we can't manage it we'll we will manifest crushing elimination game panic attacks in all our potential heroes. I'm not one to be easy on multi millionaires (ever), and I know it's "not our fault", but we must manage our emotions as a strategy to get what we want. Nay, what we need. If we all chill, these guys might be the guys. or not, but chill. If you read this far, know that I love you, and I feel your pain and we should all focus our rage on the ghost of Harold Ballard. Stay strong

Pretty insightful. As someone who hates the Leafs, and spent mon night laughing my head off, I actually agree with your analysis. Unless you are willing to risk trading marner for lesser plyrs that MAY provide stronger depth for the lineup throughout, you kinda have to give it another shot. But the Leafs window, with this group, is starting to slowly shrink. Muzzin is 32, Tavares is over 30 and isn't getting better or quicker, and his contract is becoming an albatross. Reilly is 29 and is a FA in a yr. And honestly, another failure like this, and Matthews could decide he's sick and tired of the TO media and market, and want to go back to the US.

@@spcoll7587 The Leafs players and staff can do a much better job unloading the pressure of winning Round One and beyond on to their opponents. That’s certainly easier said than done, however, nothing worth achieving comes easy. Kris Versteeg recently shared his insights on a telephone interview with the media. As a retired player he seems to offer a thorough understanding of what led to the early exit for the Leafs. Expectations and pressure management is ultimately what I firmly believe did the most damage to the team as a whole. That’s not to say that some players did not shine through. Looking for someone to blame always seems to come before any constructive criticism is shared. That could change for the better as well.

1000% agree with all of your takes on Marner. It's why I couldn't wait for this episode. Sick and tired of the talking heads on the big 2 sports networks always making excuses for Marner and the team because they're more concerned about straining their relationship with leafs players and management. When you make salary demands like Marner did that are crippling this team to this day you're well within reason to criticize him when he's clearly not living up to the contract. Sick and tired of this Leafs management group coddling their players and certain members of the media making excuses for this team year after year. Enough is enough.
