Gardening is a skill that takes time - you have to get to know your land, learn what grows well, what animals inhabit the same space, and then as seasons shift everything changes once again. We have a LOT to learn about growing in Hawaii, but the thing we've figured out so far is that this land was built for the taro plant. Here in Hawaii, taro is called kalo, and the baby plant is called huli. The leaves are a rich sources of nutrients from protein to Vitamin C and Vitamin A. The tuber at the bottom of the plant is called the corm and is a hearty, starchy, staple food. Hawaiians use it to make the traditional food called poi, which we still have yet to see made in person, but hopefully, we can experience that one day soon!
We are so grateful to Ola Mau Farms ( / ola_mau_farms ) for their generous gift of 18 huli stock so that we could replenish our garden. We're looking forward to their call to come to spend some days working on the farm as a trade for this incredible plant.
And of course still grateful for the time we spent with Daniel and his wife Alohi and all the wisdom they imparted to us during our quick trip. If you want to see the video we made with them here's a link - • URGENT: Protect This H...
Oh and we brought back the blog: www.wildweroam...

Hey Dana it just hit me that your child is going to be able to go back and look at these videos and just see how awesome her parents are and it will be something she will treasure forever. You guys have been such a good role model to me that I have been speaking more kindly and softer to my husband and not so aggressive and anxiety ridden like I sometimes do. So continue to make videos and treat each other so kindly because you’re definitely making a difference in my life and I’m sure you’re making a difference in many other viewers lives as well. And your soon to be child will be able to have these forever and they are so incredibly calming and special. I just thought I would point that out.

Carrots are definitely a "set them and forget them" kind of plant. They take a long time to mature and their stocks and leaves get HUGE! I think this year my carrot greens were 2 feet long by the time I harvested. I do carrots every year and I leave those babies in the ground for months and only take what I want to eat every few days, they can stay in the ground all through the winter too. Your gardening will only get better and I'm excited to see the lush vegetation you will definitely have by next year :) Great job! And that taro will be so amazing!

Hey friends, another tip for carrots and other root vegetables, they do best when sowed in the place they are intended to be grown rather than transplanted. It can cause stress and shock to the plant which will inhibit the growth of the root. Gardening is such a learning experience, every season poses new challenges but so much opportunity for growth! I applaud yall for giving it a try and not giving up!

I got a bite from a centipede during the night at the neck sleeping outside on a island, so we skipped the hospital boat etc. and my partner rubbed salt with oil into it. Be careful it hurts so much but in the morning I was fine again. With the garden you need fertilizer best is effective microorganisms you buy or make by yourself and without a lot of sun and warmth not much will grow! I visited farms in India, greece and spain where the sun was burning down the harvest was amazing!

The way Indians cook taro is, we boil the whole thing in water or steam it till its tender and peal the skin off, it comes off so easily that way and there is very less wastage.. We then cut them into pieces, make a spice rub, give the taro pieces a good rub with salt and spices and then put them on hot pan with few drops of oil, wait till its crispy and brown on the outside and soft on the inside, its yummy.. We also boil, chop and add them into curries.. As always a nice video.. Have fun..

In my experience a new garden doesn’t do well in the first year, the soil needs to mature, you need earth worms to arrive, pests will happen but eventually the predators will arrive and everything will be more balanced, keep adding compost and you will get a better harvest over time.

Watching this vid, a few pointers: plant carrots directly into the garden, not seed pods, your book choy I believe you can cut and come again like spinach, lettuces, basil and several other plants. You dont throw away ANY plants, just till under to feed the soil. A few more but for now. The plants have beautiful color though! Hugs❣Grow on!

Carrots like sandy loose soil. That’s why the carrots were so small but the tops were large. My husband and I really considered making the move to Hawaii while we were there for 2 weeks over the holidays, but we love living in the various seasons. Hawaii only has hot and hotter. 😂 I love my garden even if it is not fruitful all the time. So we decide we would stay on the east coast with lower cost of living and save money so we can do more trips to Hawaii to enjoy ourselves. 😁

🌱🌱🌱 BASIL TIPS: if plants are healthy, keep 'em! HOW TO PRUNE: pinch back all main leader growth (basil tops) down to just above first or second set of true leaves. Two new stems will grow from that point (you might even see little baby leaves already started). They'll take off, and after one or two new sets of leaves form on the two new stems, pinch again to just above new leaves. You'll effectively constantly be eating the tops. 1 stem will become 2, then 4... After a while, you'll have large, bushy plants, which will offer excellent harvesting over and over again without needing to sacrifice the plant. Also do this if tops start to flower to prolong growing and harvesting. Also works for holy basil (awesome, especially in tea). When planting new seedlings, give them space for their eventual girth. HARVESTING TIP: if taking out the whole plant, pull out with roots, wrap root bundle in moist towel, store upright (mason jar or bucket work well so you can add water after a couple of days) in room temp to keep longer, fresher and tastier. Happy gardening! 🌱🌱🌱

Ahh I love gardening vids! You might have already done it but if not, you could maybe look into what grows well in your area - maybe talk to some neighbours to see what works well for them. Also! If you’re clearing a bed, try leaving roots and chopped leaves in the soil. The roots create soil structure and airways for drainage, and they and the leaves will eventually rot down into the soil providing nutrients and more structure. Also wow I loved the shot from behind the water flow! So good.

In my experience carrots take much longer than you’d expect before they’re ready to harvest (at least 3 months) I usually wait until you can start to see some of the carrot popping out of the ground before i start harvesting. It’s also important to thin them out to allow for adequate space for them to grow

♥️🤗👍🏻 I was thinking not enough sun from day one, but gardening is 1/3 from books, 1/3 from friends and the other 1/3 from experience. The last 1/3 takes time. If it's a very wet place and it's in the shade it's going to be an uphill battle. Plants know that the temperature is and are awesomely clever, so for example if it's it's 28 degrees no flowering will appear. One needs to learn the micro climate of specific location in the garden bed.

OK maybe someoe else has mentoned this but if not I shall. You are in a jungle, insects are everywhere and they will nibble your greens as fast as you can plant them. You need to be proactive and make sure seedlings are protected either by mesh or a solid container. Also find your worms. You need worms for healthy soil. Plus think about your planting chart. Some plants and vergatable work well off each other and help to keep pests down. Don't be fussy and if you need to plant things like lavendar even if you never use it do it to help attract other things. Also, given how much rain you are getting you need to consider proper drainage. Roots will rot in too much mositure and not to think of the mould and fungi that will grow on those roots and spread to other plants. Gardening is not a plant and forget it activity. It is plant and nurture it at least every other day if not every day.

Add lots of compost and veggie mix soil into the garden, having regular feeding with seaweed helps a lot too. I started my garden only 4 months ago, but it's doing so well. Hi friends, Gardening is very tricky for us too, we are also new and still learning. This last fall spring I planted cabbage and we had so many white butterflies that the neighbors thought something is very unusual last year with the butterfly's gotten. Sadly our leafy greens like kale and spinach didn't make it because the butterflies eat it all! We figured out that radishes, some lettuce not all and then tomatoes and peppers grow for us well. But eggplants nope, carrots Dana that you had there was actually big, basil I notice does well on sunny and dry spots, so I did plant it south! It did not do well at the back yard, calendula did amazing. Stan's grandma sent us some Bulgarian herb - savory - I wish I could send you some seeds somehow, as I am curios if it will grow in Hawaii, but anyways that did well and roses. And sadly nothing else, no pumpkins, no corn no potatoes no cucumbers in our yard lol, oh onions did well but only spring ones and parsley too. You would think since we are in Oklahoma we will grow this but oh well. With time I figured that each corner of the garden has its own soil so it might be missing something like sulphur or zink or whatever else. Oh we tried watermelons - they were as big as tomatoes on a vine haha. But one must continue trying and never give up! If tarot do well for you, how about sweet potatoes? I have a feeling that might do well there too? We have omicron this week and the whole house is in bed :( so deff. looking for this video. As usual sending hug and smile to all

Your carrots needed to be thinned out before they can thrive and you also have something eating all your other plant leaves so check when it’s dark for slugs and snails then you can pick them off and dispose of them as they can devour a garden so fast if left. Another tip for carrots: after the seeds come out in a bundle of 2 or more, leave the biggest and remove the rest. Seems a waste, but a carrot needs space to grow. Plants want to grow. Light, air and soil nutrition are all essential for healthy growth and nutritious food. With the raised bed, you should be able to amend it to be a healthy space for your plants. Maybe a soil test would help you identify what your raised bed soil needs for healthy veg growth? And, Dana, you are so right-there are some plants that will LOVE your area and climate, some just won't and some will sulk along. Good luck on your gardening journey!

@@WildWeRoam the back of the seed packet tells how many days it will take till harvest. We keep a journal on when we plant the seeds. Also we might wait and plant seeds every two weeks so we don’t get everything maturing at once. Good luck.

Hey guys! If this helps I grown fruit and vegetables in my garden in England :) The carrots will taken a few months to grow, the greens will slow down growing. You should have left them a while longer 🥕

Just curious about the green shirt hanging up at the end of one of the beds. Is that to encourage growth or was it just frying??!

I don’t know if you can peel taro like a potato but it might be easier than using a large chopping knife : )

I think you need some cow or at least chicken poop in that garden also sun is a good idea. Since you live in a rainy place and is humid no need to water so much. We have to worry about seasons, I think carrots and parsley like warm climate. We plant most of our garden in spring time/late march and we harvest close to summer/late june. we only do lettuce and spinach in cold months.

Was the boat project an investment and profit project or was the change to being back on terra firma due to covid and circumstances? Was looking forward to some blue water sailing from you guys. Regardless, I enjoy the progression

My main tip for gardening is not putting too much in one spot and concentrate on the few plants that really grow, not the many ones that aren't. Many small plants won't give you any real harvest, once they're not working out throw them away or use them for experimenting.

I'm guessing your issue is a mix of lack of sun and too much rain. Do a soil test to check nutrients as well. They are fairly cheap and easy to do

Have you seen a lot of slugs in your garden? Moving to Maui will happen at some point in my life, and honestly rat lung worm is the only part of that giant leap that really scares me 😅 I know it's not super prevalent on Maui, but still a concern.

Dana, are you resting enough? Am concerned because you were looking tired and a bit breathless - are you in 2 nd trimester now - if so you need to rest lots and not feel guilty about it!

So idk if I am right but the carrots make me think you need more drainage and aeration in your soil 😁 Root veggies don’t grow unless the soil is well drained

Carrots need lots of sun. Basil could be grown inside in pots, its a herb.

Smart gardeners grow what's easy for them. I can grow greens and tomatoes, so that's what I grow 🦋 If you want an alternative gardening option for growing in containers. Check out Robbie and Gary gardening on KZbin for some smart ideas. Maybe you could plant some greens like cilantro or Lettuce on the porch.

I know your going to bring new life into the world soon and so I thought I'd ask you to do an eps. on global warming and or climate change. For all who plan to bring new life into the world who will inherit our legacy which isn't looking the good. Alaska is melting much faster then we imagined and it threatens the lives or the next generation. You have a huge platform and it would help if you'd make your followers aware that we can make a difference.
