Quality bit of tinkering! Can I make an observation regarding tidying the unit though - I know you don't have a lot of spare time, but the only way to really get it tidy and organised is to take absolutely EVERYTHING out, including all members of the fleet, and start from scratch. Tidying up little corners will never make much difference, and is counterproductive!!😀

How did I miss this? It doesn't matter that it's just an alternator belt, Carly is great for tackling it herself 👍. It may be a small job ,but it is still important .I once changed the fan belt on my Morris Minor after overheating in an unfamiliar town. It wasn't quite so easy as the Daihatsu, because the alternator bolts (converted to alt. 20+ years ago ) were quite rusty...

The Daihatsu dealership near Shoreham: both of my (former) Charades originated from there. It was Hares Daihatsu in Rustington, BN16 3BH. 👍 . . . oh, and there was one in Worthing, Clarion Cars: I borrowed their courtesy car once, a gold 4 door Charade with 131k miles on it. Scruffy, but sweet as a nut. 🙂

I remember tightening the belt on my FrankenSaab 99 with the 2.0L B engine in place of it's 1.75 liter TR7 based engine. The alternator is nearly under the overhanging side of the 45 degree leaning engine and is also a lot closer to the firewall than the smaller engine, which made access from above not easy. Would have been smart to have bought a pair of wheel stands/ramps. I'd use a jack stand and place the right front wheel under the footwell bulge, yeah a lot of sore necks from that car's needed repairs. I was much younger then. Miss HubNut gets a well done from me, she's a stickler for detail and that matters.

Miss Hubnut, your spannering skills for a beginner are top notch, keep at it. What i will say is, after about 100-200 miles re tension that alternator belt just to take out the initial stretch, then it will be fine for a good few thousend miles. good way to do it is slacking the bolts and get Ian to hold the tension very tight with a long lever bar or long screw driver then do the bolts back up tight, job done and not really any need to disconnect the battery when retensioning the belt.

This looked like a nice little belt to do. My bloody smax had absolutely no room and the tensioner had a really low profile bolt on it so was really hard to keep it pulled back to get the belt on. Ramp extensions are a very, very worthwhile expense. A lot less clutch abuse and a much clearer perception of where you are from inside the vehicle. I think they would also help in the unlikely scenario that you acquire a vehicle with exceptionally low front bodywork.

Thing is, I'm not used to working on tiny modern (ish) cars. That alternator is rather tricky to reach compared to the ones on older cars so changing its belt isn't so easy. Oh, and I think the general rule of thumb is that if you're tightening up the alternator bottom bolt from under the car, it's tight enough when you can lift your shoulders from the ground while hanging from the ratchet handle. Yes, I think that's right...
@Ju1ian10001 Жыл бұрын
Nah thats an easy alternator for a modern city car, loads of room there, thats an hour tops to do that one. Can't remember the car it was on but the alternator i did the other took 3 hours start to finish and the book time was 2and 1/2 hours, i had no room at all, and i'm an MOT tester/ technicain by trade. very late modern cars are an absolute horror to work on, and i still got 20 years left before i retire, god help me lol

@@Ju1ian10001 Oh yeah, I realise it's far from the worst but I'm used to working on rear-drive Fords,, Vauxhalls and Rootes/Chrysler cars from the 60's and 70's with engine bays you could party in! Bags of room round everything and low-tech enough that they can be fixed using only a pair of molegrips, a flat head screwdriver and a big hammer!

eh, don't worry about the spanner use. it comes eventually and gets to be second nature (my stepfather has a little trick where he can just LOOK at a bolt head the first time, and be able to tell the size). The lights, though...oy. glad to know we're (Yanks) not the only ones who have to put up with that. When they introduced them on the 99's in the Parabola type, they went opaque in only *three months of use* (and I mean completely opaque!) btw, Daihatsu actually had a single model year shot in the states in 91. I think only 4-5000 units were sold over the entire country.
