This song...this song...it was recorded and technically not even finished when he went to play his show in Madison, Wisconsin...he had planned to return to it after a few shows...this was released posthumously after his death...he was only 26 and accomplished so damn much...

When my daughter, Faith, was two months old, we were driving home from my dad's house and she was just screaming and crying in the backseat. My husband made me a mix CD and I put it in. This song came on and the minute he started singing she stopped crying and started cooing. I played this song all the way home and she was completely content. She passed away from SIDS a couple of weeks after this. So this song has a special place in my heart and Otis Redding is one of my favorites now. God bless.

Otis had his own band, the Bar-Kay’s. He started out of Georgia. The Temps were with Motown- Otis was with Muscle Shoals Recods in Alabama. He wrote Respect which Aretha made her own. He was a dynamic performer who died in a plane crash at age 26. I was blessed to see him at the Monterey Pop Fest six months before he passed. There’s great video on YT of that performance!

I'm glad you asked Siri if he was still alive. Many of the songs you react to are from artists that are older or no longer with is. There is history in music behind every song. Music brings the generations together. Music appreciation is what you pass down to your sons. Music represents moments in time. Those moments can be current or memories from our youth. Music connects us to so many things.

For me the meaning of "nothing to live for and heading to the Frisco Bay" was a turning point for him. Now he realizes the beauty of life and is just sitting on the dock of the bay enjoying his new perspective. Its hard to listen to this song and not just admire the awesomeness that life provides. There is only high because there is low.

Otis Redding was a Soul music pioneer in the 1950s and 1960s. Redding was very close to becoming a crossover Rock music star at the time of his death in a plane crash in 1967. Reportedly, the plane made an emergency water landing, and everyone got out of the plane, but most of the passengers froze to death in the icy cold waters in the Winter, waiting to be rescued. There are a handful of syndicated TV performances by Otis Redding available for viewing here on KZbin. He also was a featured performer at the 1967 Monterey Pop Music Festival, which was his his first performance before a primarily white audience, what he referred to as "the Love Crowd". Otis Redding's performance highlights are part of the concert film, "Monterey Pop".

Otis Redding co-wrote (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay with guitarist Steve Cropper and recorded it in late 1967. Otis Redding died in a plane crash only a few days after recording this song (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay. Steve Cropper mixed "Dock of the Bay" at Stax Studios in 1968. He added the sound of seagulls and waves crashing to the background, as Redding had requested, recalling the sounds he heard when he was staying on the houseboat. The song was released in 1968, becoming the first posthumous single to hit number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts.

This is one of the greatest songs of the 20th century...and it almost never came to be. Otis Redding was heading out on a four day tour and made a stop at his record company to sign some papers. His producer suggested that since there was a studio available, that he should do a "working track" of his new song. He went in and sang it straight through beginning to end...one take. Then left for the airport and his charted plane. Four days later, he was killed when that plane crashed. A one take masterpiece!

When Otis laid down the vocals for this, the last verse wasn't written yet so he just whistled it and was going to add it in later but tragically he passed away before he could record it so the song was released as is. Otis was the man! You should check out "Try a Little Tenderness"

This song actually came out after his death. The plane went down in bad weather when he was trying to get to a show he was performing at. In his short life, he made a major impact on the music industry. Listen to “These Arms of Mine” and “Try a Little Tenderness”. You won’t regret it.

I loved Otis and this song. It was like my theme song. We had some awesome artists back then. They are sorely missed too.
