*Unfortunately, Otis never got to see this song become the hit it did or even hear the finished version of it because he recorded the finished version just 3 days before he was killed in a plane crash. Here it is 2023 and we're still listening to him. He has an amazing playlist.*

Otis was with Stax Records, the funky, bluesy alternative to Motown. The house band was Booker T. and the MGs, Aretha Franklin was another other big Stax artist along with many others like Sam and Dave and Duane Allman was a frequent sessions guitarist.

There was going to be another verse but Otis had to leave for a performance in another state. He did the whistle to fill in time until he returned. On his way back, his plane crashed. The song was released after his death, whistle and all! Or, so I’ve heard!!

One of my favorite Otis stories is that in order to help his family out financially when he was a young teenager he decided to enter a weekly local talent show with a $5 prize for 1st place. He went on to win it 15 consecutive weeks until he was banned from entering in order to give other people a chance. Otis is one of those artist who leave me wondering what we lost when he died. Who knows how much more influential he’d have become if he’d lived to keep making music.

I basically lived this song, when I joined the navy and left my home in Georgia. My ship was home ported across the bay from San Fran (Alameda, Ca). I've sat on the dock and looked across the bay at the San Fran skyline quite a few times, just sat there thinking much like Otis.

One of my favorite songs from my childhood. I’m only 38 but have had a very eclectic music taste my whole life. In 5th grade our school got a new Principal and as an introduction he played this song in music class for every grade. I already knew this song but it was pretty awesome still. Great reaction🤘🏼

Gone at only 26 in a plane crash. Left us with so many amazing/beautiful songs that we're still enjoying 60 years later. Long live the true king of soul. Also, not a temptation 😅. He had a band called "the barkeys". Only one survived the crash

Otis Redding was the band called The Sould Clan. There was an Otis in the Temptations, though. This one above is incredible and made his musical mark on this earth. Pretty fantastic. We found a dog tied to a post at the dock by the bay. He was left there. He became ours and we named him: 'Otis'. Best dog ever! Thanks for playing this!

Saying you're addicted to music is like saying you're addicted to nutritious food or rainbows or air or sunshine or happiness. An addiction is a harmful behavior that you can't stop. There is no downside to music, it is good for your soul.

.......back in the 60's Motown Records was not the only label pressing soul vinyl. There were a lot of smaller labels specializing in R&B then, but Motown was the biggest of these specialty labels, although Atlantic Records was prolly bigger as it handled non-R&B acts. The city of Philadelphia was known for its R&B sound (Philly soul) and in the 70's it had a label called Philadelphia International that was putting out artists such as The Spinners, Lou Rawls and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, etc..... 🤓

This song came out in 1967. I was in the Navy at that time and at sea there were no radio stations to listen to. When we came into port this song was already a huge hit. It is sort of an anthem of that time. That was the "Summer of Love" and young people were streaming to San Francisco to be part of that Hippie scene. I'm now 77 years old a still love this song!

I am very much addicted to music! I can't live without it. My sister, who is the reason I am into metal, doesn't listen to music any more. She says she hasn't got time. But I don't know how she gets by without it! Her husband is not into rock or metal and I think she doesn't listen to it cos he wouldn't like it? I don't know. All I know is I can not survive without it!!!

My favorite Otis MEMORY is this. I fell in love in high school back in 1990. We did split up and for the following 20 plus years I never stopped thinking about her no matter how my life was going. Fortunately for me we found our way back to each other and our first new date was to go see Ray LaMontagne at the Orpheum Theater in Boston. It was a gorgeous night and once we were in my truck cruising down the Mass Pike towards Boston with the windows down I put on Otis’ greatest hits and she snuggled up under my arm all warm and soft and smelling like heaven. All these years later and I can close my eyes and just be there in my mind. I think I’m going to go in the other room and remind her. Thanks guys.

Steve Cropper of Booker T and the MGS and The Blues Bros Band, wrote the the 2nd verse of song, "I left my home in GA..." and played guitar on "Dock of the Bay. Cropper and Donald Duck Dunn played what was called the chitlin circuit back in the day when only some clubs would book black entertainers. They also backed up Sam and Dave. They were in the studio band at Memphis' STAX records, so got to see a lot of musicians. Lived in Memphis from 88-92 and got to see Cropper's/Dunn's local band a few times. Once was during the filming of "Great Balls of Fire," and Dennis Quaid was singing with them. You never knew who you would see in Memphis.

Otis Redding and Steve Cropper wrote this song. It was released three days before he died in a plane crash. It carries the distinction of being the first song to reach #1 posthumously. Cropper was the sessions man at Stax Records where it was recorded in Memphis. Otis wasn't a Motown man.

Died in a plane crash before this was released and some people thought he prophisized his own death because in the song he sang' I have nothing to live for, looks like nothing gonna come my way.' I watched a documentary on Otis and the song is a lot about being pulled into different directions by management and the music industry and them wanting to change him, the line ' I can't do what 10 people tell me to do' refers to that. Some in the music industry called Otis a sell out and wanted him to make different music while some wanted Otis to be more mainstream..he just couldn't win. In the end his death made this song become a global hit.

Brilliant easy cruising song, with a sad story behind it. The whistling was just a place-holder until he came up with more lyrics. He never got a chance, dying in a plane crash before he came up with more, only days after laying this down. BTW, in the mid 1960s, there were a lot of good reasons why a black man would prefer to be in San Fran than in Georgia... and Motown, Stax/Volt, and Atlantic were the three big soul labels.

The reason the song ends with whistling is because Otis never got to finish the vocals because , as Stephanie Clark states, he was killed in a plane crash before the song was completed, and of course he did not get to enjoy the success of his music, a real rock and roll tragedy. His biggest moment was at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, where many tragic figures appeared, Jimi Hendrix, Cass Elliot (Mamas and Papas), Janis Joplin and Keith Moon (The WHO).
