This may sound like bragging, but it’s an expression of gratitude. I saw both matches. Both took an ordeal to get there. Two of the best memories of my life. I am 100% in agreement with harkirehal258: these videos must be preserved. Federer is (I refuse to use past tense) a genius. His determination and level of play in both matches were jaw dropping. And he and Rafa have a wonderful, genuine, heartwarming friendship. Anyone who writes or reads these comments is all too aware of the running ‘GOAT’ debate, now probably over since Novak has won 23 Slams. It is absolutely meaningless and always has been. Others disagree. So be it. But for me and many others Roger is a unique gift to tennis and his fans. And in keeping with h258, following Roger, his commitment to excellence, his magical ability, and his sheer love of the game during a difficult 10-year period of my life actually inspired me to keep going. I made it through. No one else in sports has ever done that, or anything like it, for me. I’m not alone (h258). Thank you, Raz.

Federer crushed Nadal on fast or indoor surfaces (even Wimbledon which would eventually become a rally fest). But 2017 was the first time Federer really destroyed Nadal on slow surfaces like Indian and Miami Wells decisively. While he lost the match in the French Open, that was a match with a lot of wind variability which undoubtedly hurt him more than Nadal considering his only chances of beating Nadal was to take the ball early.

You could do that with Roger, too. For years I would laugh at Nadal's balding pate...but Roger's hairline started heading backwards about 5 years ago at a fairly rapid pace so I had to stop making fun of Rafa's comb over. I still get a little teary-eyed about no longer being able to say, "Rafa's got a big old bald spot...bur Roger's got great hair!" LOL! Novak at least has all of his hair...but his haircut is stupid and has no style...so he's not winning the hair GOAT war either. LOL!

This is the one of two ways how to dominate Nadal on any surface regardless it's fast court or not... Strong strokes, changing angles and being stable, even though there are many players who hit the ball hard for their entire career, it's so simple for Rafa to overcome with that, he's managing to do very quick transition from defence to offense. The second way is being a tennis wall like Novak Djokovic. There is no other way to beat Rafa anywhere, if he isn't dealing with injury.

I’d like to emphasize that either your ground strokes have to be freakishly powerful, like say Thiem, Tsonga, Berdych, Verdasco, or you have to combine strong ground strokes with taking the ball really early, like Federer and sometimes Djokovic. But you also have to employ this game plan without hitting many unforced errors, hence why all these players have losing head to heads against Nadal except Djokovic, who is an exception because he is a freakishly good defensive player and can go toe-to-toe with Rafa from the baseline. And sometimes, even if you employ your game plan perfectly, Rafa can still beat you, just ask Verdasco at AO 2009, Thiem at the USO 2018, Berdych at AO 2012, Federer AO 2009. And that’s all only on hard courts. On clay you’re pretty much screwed no matter what you do.

I appreciate Rafa as a player. Even when he lost the Australian Open in 2012 to Djokovich, it felt like I watching two Artificial Intelligence machines playing each other. If what you're saying is true then Rafa has had a lot of problems. He may lead Fed 24-16 overall but if you take out their 16 clay appearances then Fed leads 14-10. Thats fourteen times in matches where Rafa has been injured when playing Fed? Why must people compare such perfect champions!

Federer's age per match in order; 26-30-36. ten years difference between first and last match in this video. Federer aged like fine wine. his 2017 performance was far better than his 2011 and 2007 performance and both of them were indoors in Nadal's weakest conditions and Nadal being 5 years younger. It only seemed that Nadal aged in those ten years and Federer only becoming better. that 2017 IW and Miami performance might be the best of their rivalry for Federer. Rg08, possibly Nadal's best.

The inside rubber surface is my preferred court to play on, it's shocking how bad my serves are outside, or how I can't move on clay. In my opinion we can't go too hard of Nadal here. Federer is probably the better player of them both, but not on clay. I respect both of these players and think to myself they are fricking awesome in a game like this

@@Harrison13300 yes agreed..... Nadal is far and beyond Federer on clay in terms of match up. he is far and beyond everyone in history probably....when it comes to clay. Federer is quite ahead on grass and indoors and slightly ahead on hard courts. but the fact that they are close is what makes their rivalry intriguing, just like their rivalry with Djokovic. what makes FEDALOVIC intriguing is their extremely high quality game on all surfaces against each other. you dont get to see that on a per match basis over 15 plus years in any other rival trio. no trio even comes close.

I dont think Federer is better than Nadal or Djokovic and vice versa.....I would say Federer had it easy and tough with age... he had it easy to an extent because in his prime only nadal was challenging and only on clay.... once he crossed his age prime... Djokovic arrived so took a larger piece of the pie he enjoyed up until that point.... but Nadal has had it the toughest... with injuries.... then coming onto the scene with Fed at his best...then as he hit his prime Djokovic arrives.... he never really enjoyed time on his own....(except 2010 maybe or 2008) except on clay of course.... so he balanced it out there.... Djokovic had it tough then easy... like an opposite of Federer.... he arrived seeing both Nadal and Federer dominate as world no.1 and 2..... had health issues.... and was just coming short against those two until he changed his diet and attitude and mental ability.... so he struggled for a good 4-5 years....now when he hit his prime... he still had Nadal to contend with... but he had an edge on HC and disadvantage on clay... it still remains same... once he dismantled nadal...an older Federer would rise to the occasion and beat him... so he really had the toughest challenge in his prime... Nadal too... but he rose early to have an experiencial advantage and also tactical advantage against Fed from the start.... So Djokovic had to find his way to win... which took some time and then 2011 happened but he still didn't really solve federer.... then 2012-14 happened..... then he had the best seasons as he had solved Fed and Nadal.... both losing form or to age or injuries...from there only murray and Wawrinka really posed a threat outside the big 3....Wawrinka really played exceedingly well to beat Djokovic those three GS victories.....So Djokovic had to fight hard to get some of his victories.... but he had luck too... just like Nadal and Federer did on other occasions... his biggest luck though was there was no one else from the next gen that rose to the moment like Djokovic did to Federer.... just think about it... had Djokovic not risen in 2014-16... Federer could have won potentially 2-4 grand slams... as Djokovic was the one who beat him in those slams....I dont think anyone other than Nadal could beat him(not counting seppi and cilic and wawrinka as they were singular victories) from 2014 to 2016 consistently....without injury. Nadal had injury and drop of form... same with wimby 2019.... had Djokovic not really stepped up... Federer was the undoubtedly going to be overall king of the mountain....Nadal would only come close second... had Djokovic had someone like Zverev or Thiem rising consistently early enough.... he would have missed on some slams... they did rise but not high enough to finish Djokovic... thats why they are not in the same league... just think... Thiem losing in 5 at AO2020... Tsitsipas losing in 5 after leading 2-0 at RG2021... Medvedev really having a bad day at AO2021... Federer having match points at wimby 2019.... a lot of luck has benefitted Djokovic too.... Federer too had it... so did Nadal.... but Djokovic will "look" better since nobody till now has come to take a piece of his pie as Fed and Nadal have slowed down since 2020...Nadal being effective only on clay... Finally medvedev rose up massively to beat Djokovic at USO2021 and took one piece... can others also jump in and start taking more... time will tell... but as I see it.... Djokovic winning one or two more is not going to be surprising.... and will not make him greater than the other two... neither of the other two will not be really greater than the rest of big 3...so it should always be a stalemate... its a disservice to the two over whom you pick the greatest one.... but yeah...Federer remains a personal favorite for the way he plays... not really results but to think for the style he plays.... how on earth did he get so many slams...thats a legitimate question...... plus given Nadal and Djokovic.... he should have been stopped by them at 15-16 max... him getting to 20 first shows he remained competitive during their prime.... thats a conclusive story for me.... Djokovic and Nadal dont really have the same challenge as Federer... so unless that happens then its not even a fair comparison... Nadal had Thiem at RG...he handled him very well on clay... but lost out soon enough on other courts...Djokovic has Medvedev and Thiem...they are both kind of stale mate at the moment...Tsitsipas has joined the fight...so the real test for Djokovic begins now...

Out of the competitors my personal favourite is Tsitsipas, but I think Medvedev will go very far, not only after beating Djokovic in the Olympics, but the way he plays astonishes me. I put Zverev just above Tsitsipas. But as Federer gets older, and Nadal not competing in some majors like 2021 Wimbledon, Djokovi is put at the very top with Nadal taking a back seat. That gives Djokovic a few years before the competitors surpass Nadal. But if you think about when they do, or when Nadal retires, Djokovic is left to stay at top spot. After Nadal and Federer retire, that will be an interesting time in Tennis. I am sure that everyone who loves tennis agrees that, that will be an interesting period of Tennis. But the real question is. Who will be dominant of the competitors? After the big three retire my guess is it will be no set no. 1, it will be in and out from all the top players. They will be brilliant players in ten years, but I don't know if they can get any better than Nadal, Djokovic and Federer. They are once in a generation players...

2017 indian wells was his best ever portray of masterpiece in his entire career. As if he got a magic secret. Treat to watch , motivate as well. Timing was perfect with racket and ball...I wish he could do that with his entire long career. It's like flame 🔥 that goes suddenly then off in 2018. 2017 year was his favorite year I guess. But it seems peculiar how he could not maintain his flow at start of 2018...if he can play like this within 3 to 4 yrs he could have won more 10 grand slam atleast... But u know body doesn't support it...sometimes mentally .So it's hard reality. This tennis is certainly a game of young blood . His nees was a problem after that. But he is TRUE legend and great gentleman off and on court. Great for sports . Funny way he can represent any sports and we know it will be hit next day...Hands of gold in short. We miss Roger for elegant play with less efforts on court. There are many players now whose power is awesome but cannot touch his feet. ART OF TEENIS..THROUGH SHEER TELENT AND INNOVATION.

2017 Fed was on a roll. Could have included straight sets wins over Rafa in final at Miami and Shanghai that year as well. Actually Shanghai 2017 was amazing two sets by Roger, just a handful of unforced errors, painting the lines with winners, wicked serve winning at love or 15 every game in 5 or less strokes. Unbeatable that day.

Nadal is one of the GOATS without any question in my mind. He is a bull, a legendary bastion of relentless will, a champion for the ages. Greater than Gibraltar. But his game is not as magnificent or as gifted or as creative as Federer’s. Nadal’s insanely hot, clay-favoring topspin has been aided by unchecked racquet & string technology that minimizes variety and strategy and style and intricacy. Federer is the most complete, gifted tennis player to have ever existed. That being said, Nadal is indeed the most relentless fighter to have ever existed in the game-certainly on clay. A big problem is that BIG, talented, firepower-loaded guys from different eras (e.g. Robin Soderling, Tsitsipas, Tiafoe, etc. etc.) have-in my opinion, and I could be wrong-have “satisfied” a large part of their sporting hunger for the swift financial enrichment the ATP provides. These are men (and there are others) who could have and should have carved into the dominance of Federer, as well as the slightly younger Nadal and Djokovic. Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka are the only guys of the major “tier” who seemed to hunger for titles even if they had to play for them on a highway with a makeshift net stretched across, for free. My point: Federer, Nadal, Djokovic (and to a much lesser extent Murray and Wawrinka) have demonstrated that insatiable, enduring hunger for the sheer sport of winning. I think many other talents on the mens tour have possessed that same hunger … but it got sidetracked once they made a few million and the future looked safe no matter how many big titles they won. I think there are a lot of variables and intangibles-too many!-when it comes to bestowing (the frankly overbaked) “GOAT” moniker on anybody. Asterisks abound for every great player in any sport, almost. And, given the points made above, I don’t think Grand Slam tallies and records tell the entire story about anybody, in any era. I think Federer is the most flat-out brilliant and gifted human I have ever seen wield a racquet. EXCURSUS: I grew up as a tennis-obsessed little kid in the 1970s-my young parents “dabbled” in it during the tennis boom-and I went to the US Open and other events in the 1980s and beyond. I also played the game since I was 8 but lived in a doomed hayseed town with one sad court and few even would play the game with me, including my parents: once I beat them as a little kid, they refused to play me anymore 😄. I blossomed after moving to Florida, first, and then California. I became a determined USTA 5.0 recreational/league player, but had to make a living. Weekends and weird late nights were reserved for the sport I adored. I won a couple of tournaments in my very, very spare time. Attended many pro events. My points: I *really* love the sport and have been intensely interested and involved in it for five decades; I’m in my early 50s now. Played, enjoyed, attended, devoured all the magazines, etc. END EXCURSUS I think Nadal is equal “GOAT” to Federer in terms of sustained excellence and warrior-stature, though I would quibble just a bit because over half of Nadal’s majors came on one surface (Paris!) in years when totally capable Big Hitters choked and basked in Big Money, which was sufficient. More talented dudes than Soderling ought to have taken-out Nadal a few times. Also, Nadal’s work on the main ATP surfaces, while exceptional, curiously fades each season. Mentally, Nadal is GOAT along with Federer … and Djokovic, who, as the Third Musketeer, so to speak, is second only to Federer in terms of sheer on-court giftedness and touch and instinct and talent. I’d like to see all three of these guys recognized as equal GOATS, if it comes to it, because they all deserve it in different, interesting, variable “looks” and ways. And I would also like to add Rod Laver as the Fourth Musketeer/GOAT. Yes, I got to see him play an exhibition event in Canada when I was a kid and, even though he was old then, he crushed everybody and played a game very similar to Federer’s: effortless murder. With a wood racquet … the near-equivalent of which Federer used for most of his precision-based career. Anyhow, Laver was “magic” to watch. A rarity. And two Calendar Grand Slams don’t diminish his accomplishments at all. My two cents. I appreciate the Big Three forever. What an honor to have lived in an era to see these gifted champions fight in a lively sport I could actually play myself on weekends or at a club. Golf can suck it.

This is a great example of how pre-2017 backhand was so different to 2017 and beyond, he mostly drove his backhand and made it an offense weapon instead of pre-2017 where he was just trying to keep it in play unless it was a sitter. I believe Federer only lost to Nadal 2016 to the end of his career was a the French open I believe it 7-1 in their last 8 meetings, in 2017 it was 4-1, it just showed that a healthy 100% Nadal couldn’t beat that version on Fed. Can you imagine the GOAT debate if Fed had one 2019 Wimbledon, it would be 21 fed, 22 Nadal, 23 Djok; very different conversation in respect to record.

federer is just better than nadal on hard courts, even more so after he has mastered his new 97 inch headsize racket. used to be that nadal will exploited federer's old school game, where federer uses smaller racket headsize. a high bounce to the 1 handed backhand, especially on clay courts, is difficult to return with power and keeps federer at the baseline. federer's new racket means that it is easier for him to return 1 handers, and gave him more power to his backhand.
