In the interview on the DVD, Carol is very honest about the fact that she asked them to slow the song for her. When asked if she thought she could sing, her response was, "Loudly." She is doing what every entertainer SHOULD do. She is having fun doing something she loves and inviting us to have fun with her. She made it her own in a way only Carol Burnett can. Yes, it's not everyone's cup of tea. I love her and the performance. But...as is the case with the rest of us, it's only my opinion.

this song has been done to death! Leave it to Carol to do it her way.. she has always been the queen of mimicry.. and slowing it down you can hear all the words.. and yet she found new laughs spots in it.. genius..

to you're point, I've never heard it at the same tempo as the original featuring Beth Howland (although I'm sure it's been done). Still, it's not slow, and what a treat to have an extra nanosecond to absorb every word. Carol Burnett's performance is excellent and I'm glad it is preserved for the ages.
@joelabramson61802 жыл бұрын
As Carol Buenet clearly states to the brides maide " Are You In There...." Only she could provide what I think is a clear added line to convey the notion of what happens on a wedding day. Is those lines in the original lyrics?
@carolineh6489 жыл бұрын
I keep seeing that people are saying that Carol's version is slower than the original. She's probably doing it slower so people can understand her, to put more comedy into it, and to do her own version of the song. I personally love the original and this one.
@JenniferWGrossSings9 жыл бұрын
A FandomedThespian It appears that everyone is singing their parts at a faster tempo and Carol is slower- probably for comedic effect, like you previously mentioned.

Lewis Keyes So are you claiming Carol Burnett knows better than Stephen Sondheim? Love Carol, but I think Sondheim knows his own work best. (Not saying she's not allowed to do her own spin- but having a preference for the speed of the original is a completely acceptable stance)

Carol puts her own spin on this fun song. Yes it's slower than usual but holds up nicely. One version doesn't have to be 'better' than another; they just offer something different. Beth Howland, the original set the frantic pace. Madeline Kahn does a terrific frantic almost deadpan interpretation. Another version I saw here on KZbin has the singer doing a very frantic crazy version. All have their merits!!! Enjoy them all!!!

I saw the original in 1970 and NOT A WORD OF IT could be understood. I learned the words finally by repeated listening, but it is so much better for the audience to be able to catch so many quick laughs. Most versions find something fun and new and Burnett's version has a lot of wonderful inflections and many of her beloved vocal quirks. Great job!

Just thought I’d throw the lyrics down here Bless this day Pinnacle of life Husband joined to wife The heart leaps up to behold This golden day. Today is for Amy Amy, I give you the rest of my life To cherish and to keep you To honor you forever Today is for Amy My, happily, soon-to-be wife. Pardon me, is everybody here? Because if everybody's here I'd like to thank you all For coming to the wedding. I'd appreciate you going even more I mean, you must have lots of better things to do And not a word of it to Paul Remember Paul? You know, the man I'm going to marry But I'm not, because I wouldn't ruin anything As wonderful as he is. Thank you all for the gifts and the flowers, Thank you all, now it's back to the showers Don't tell Paul, but I'm not getting married today. Bless this day Tragedy of life Husband bound to wife The heart leaps up And feels dead This dreadful day. Listen everybody, look, I don't know what you're waiting for A wedding. What's a wedding? It's a prehistoric ritual Where everybody promises fidelity forever, Which is maybe the most horrifying word I ever heard of, Which is followed by a honeymoon, where suddenly he'll realize He's saddled with a nut, and want to kill me, which he should. Thanks a bunch, but I'm not getting married Go have lunch, 'cause I'm not getting married You've been grand, but I'm not getting married Don't just stand there, I'm not getting married And don't tell Paul, but I'm not getting married today. Go! Can't you go? Why is nobody listening? Goodbye! Go and cry At another person's wake. If you're quick, for a kick You could pick up a christening But please, on my knees, There's a human life at stake! Listen everybody, I'm afraid you didn't hear Or do you want to see a crazy lady fall apart in front of you? It isn't only Paul who would be ruining his life You know, we'll both of us be losing our identities I telephoned my analyst about it, and he said to see him Monday But by Monday I'll be floating in the Hudson with the other garbage. I'm not well, so I'm not getting married You've been swell, but I'm not getting married Clear the hall, 'cause I'm not getting married Thank you all, but I'm not getting married And don't tell Paul, but I'm not getting married today. Bless this bride Totally insane Slipping down the drain And bless this day in our hearts As it starts To rain. Today is for Amy Go! Can't you go? Look, you know I adore you all But why watch me die Like Eliza on the ice? Look, perhaps I'll collapse In the apse right before you all So take back the cake Burn the shoes, and boil the rice. Look, I didn't want to have to tell you, But I may be coming down with hepatitis, and I think I'm gonna faint So if you want to watch me faint, I'll do it happily But wouldn't it be funnier to go and watch a funeral? So thank you for the twenty-seven dinner plates Thirty-seven butter knives Forty-seven paperweights Fifty-seven candle holders One more thing... I'm not getting married. Amen! Softly said... But I'm not getting married. Amen! With this ring... See, I'm not getting married! Amen! I thee wed. Still, I'm not getting married! Amen! Let us pray that we are getting married Let us pray that we're not getting married Today!

Kudos to Carol Burnett and every other artist starting with Both Howland who has publicly performed this delightful beast of a song. Which song is more cruet to a performer, "Not Getting Married Today" or Bernstein's "Glitter and Be Gay"? Thank you to these esteemed composers (and so many talented and brave singers) for creating such wonderful music. My biggest problem with Stephen Sondheim's scores, which I thoroughly love, is that when performed, the brilliance of the song almost always outshines the performance, no matter how good the performance. It's a Sisyphean task to perform Sondheim, but damn it, if it isn't all so brilliant. This clip was a treat.
