Most people agree that you should go to college after high school. I didn't do that, and I have no intention of going to college at all. In this video I wanted to explain my reasons for choosing not to go, and why that turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made.

I'm so glad I found this... My life is so so utterly FUCKED right now. About a month ago I came home and found that the person I'd been engaged to had left without a trace. I'm living at my parents now, pets are at another relatives (and miserable) & I'm wrestling with whether to go to school and become a nurse to honour the memory of my grandfather (stage 4 cancer) or sticking with my dream of writing and teaching yoga. It's not a sob story. It's not worse than anybody's else.... It's just my shit, right now. I'm happy to see that people care about this stuff.

But now I'm scared because I'm in arts and I'm gonna be in dept and I know for a fact I don't want a 9-5 or to be extremely wealthy I just want a job a love and I feel stuck

Convince her by getting a part time job and showing self dispcipline and making an actual plan of what you want to achieve and why(just like when you present a business idea to a donor). If she see's your determination she might oblige. There are also many videos about this subject out there with statistics and stuff. Also I only think this plan works for countries where you have to pay a high university fee.

Working is stressful too but in a different way. In college, you set your own schedule. For working, you have to wake up early everyday, you can't party every night in a 8-5 job. You have to go to work or else they will fire you. In college, there is stress, but I had more free time usually during winter and summer. No such thing at a job. Im kind of glad I went through college. I stayed up late many nights to study for finals and spent many hours in a computer lab. It was definitely good memories because you will most likely never experience these types of things again once you start working so I suggest you stay in college. College is only 4 years of your life while working is 30+ years.

@@LivingLyfelikeaMuffin But what about when college absolutely makes you miserable! Some people have the privilege of taking breaks during college, but others have to work every hour they can get because they need to start paying off their massive loans on top of studying and stressing over grades all the time. College is such a financial risk. You're told nothing will let you make money unless it's being a doctor, lawyer, or engineer. But what if you can't handle the courses? Then would you risk paying for 4 years to earn a degree that has a higher chance of ending up useless, like psychology or english? Risk upon risk upon risk. And unavoidably misery. The college can dismiss you, too. I'm in engineering, and if I fail or drop from a class twice, I get booted. I wish I could find it in myself to work myself to the bone to pass every class, but I'm only human. I've failed two classes already but managed to pass the 2nd time. But I'm sick of that cycle. And I'm sick of college. But I have so many people around me who are so against me giving up college. I feel trapped. Also, getting a bachelors could end up taking more than 4 years if you're really struggling. Anyway, this was just me venting.. it's nothing personal...

A couple years after high school, I received a mass email from my old English teacher calling on people to join a panel to speak to his class about college/university life. I joined the panel as one of four and I was the only person that was a college dropout. I spoke about not going to college/university and encouraged the students to rethink their education and career. Well, the look on the teacher's face was priceless. He cut me off and ended the discussion when one of his more gifted students started getting intrigued and asked a lot of questions. That was 15 years ago, when the idea of self learning through the internet was a radical concept and I often doubted my decision for many years. I'm not saying don't go to college, there are some careers that require it. But not having a degree does not mean not having an education.

In Italy school loans aren't that expensive, indeed they are very suitable compared to the cost of college in the US but still not everyone can afford to go to college and in order to do that they will have to work too (which is not simple to do while studying). I really don't understand how the American system could force young student into having debts just for what should be a right (education). I guess it is a cultural thing!

I’m a senior right now and quarantine has given me so much time to self reflect and have a lot of epiphanies. I’ve come to the conclusion that I will not be going to college. I’ve spent 3.5 years focusing on college, taking AP courses, AVID and participating in so many extracurriculars. What I really want to do is travel and learn languages. I want to learn from experiences like you, being an assistant. Come to think of it, the only time I really learned anything that stuck with me was being in ASB for four years because everything was hands on. Thank you for helping me figure out what I truly want from life.

Cora Elizabeth I’m in the same exact boat here. I’m graduating next month and I’ve been doing research on the worth of college since June of last year. In my senior year of high school I didn't apply for college. My boyfriend at the time convinced me I should go to the 2 year institution he was going to. from then on I felt like I was never good enough and even transferred to a 4 year college, which I dropped out of after 1 semester. all in all, I'm right back where I started when I graduated high school. same job, same living situation, same dreams and aspirations... All of that college stuff ended up kind of just detaching myself from who I thought I was and I went though a lot of self loathing and confusion whereas before, when I had come freshfaced out of high school...I fucking loved myself. I had so much self love, and it all just kind of dwindled away when I decided to join my peers in the rat race. So definitely consider taking a gap year or a few and really care for yourself and find yourself. or if you dont want to do that, I would still recommend a 2 year institution where you can get an associates and it's a lot less risky because it's super cheap. I'm about to finish an associate in science which was a pretty basic, preparatory major for transfering and applying towards a bachelors degree. But I wish I didnt think that I had to get a bachelors degree or I was worthless. I wish someone had told me that it's not true and I dont need that to be worth something. Getting a bachelors degree in order to gain some sort of worth will probably only end up being a nightmare experience.

The problem with just learning material without going to college is that employers don’t care about necessarily what you know they care about the degree. I want to work for the FBI. There is no “fbi degree” but they require a degree in anything to be hired. It would be much better to have me spend 4 years training with the fbi rather than 4 years taking bs classes. The same thing can ply for many jobs. I can be a math expert and know everything about accounting but without the degree I can’t get the job.

So i'm 19 and i took a gap year to live in Spain for a year to learn Spanish. Hands down the BEST thing I did in my life. You have to think it like this. You're 18 only once so enjoy the time you have you just finish high school why rush it and go right into school where you will never have a year if not more to do what you want. Once you go to college your studying and once your done you're finding a job that you studied in and from now on you're just working util retirement, so enjoy the time when you're young because you'll never have that time again. Once you're 18 you can do what you want if your parents or family don't like it who cares it's your life do what you want to do, don't let them control it. You have to do the shit you love even if your family doesn't agree with it. I had family members tell me you're not goin to Spain you have to go to school but i didn't listen to them. Don't do the normal thing go right into college and be in debt and stressed out. Take a year or two off ENJOY LIFE taking a year or two off of school isn't going to make you homeless or unsuccessful in fact you'll probably learn much more from taking time off. I learned so much from taking a gap year that no school could teach me. So worth it just take it slow. Remember you're only 18 ONCE enjoy it.

I ended up exhausted after college, and I only got my B.S. And when I say exhausted, I mean exhausted in probably all the ways possible. 4 years of cramming information into my brain to effectively take and pass exams, and add to that my odd sleeping and eating habits at the time🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️. I honestly feel I mistreated a part of my youth, and I wasnt even partying lol. Idk how you even add that part considering everything else you're doing. I guess some people look to college as the best part of their 20's....but I would have much rather spent it doing what I actually love...like traveling and experiencing cultures and people and learning more about my own beliefs. Don't get me wrong, God blessed my life with all kinds of learning experiences and it was all well worth it🙏🏼 but I'd do things a little differently with what I know now. And yeah, college is also biased in its instruction and delivery of information. I had to unlearn maaaaany things I learned in HS and college, especially when I started to pay closer attention to my own personal values and beliefs. Guess I'm not as liberal as I was taught to be, and I'm glad I eventually figured that out for myself🙏🏼

If you don’t know exactly what you want to study, don’t go to college. No ifs, ands, or buts. There’s no age limit to going to college, you have time. Get a full time job, maybe become a plumber and make $45,000 as an 18 year old. By the time you’re peers get out of college, you’ll be making almost $60,000 per year. You don’t have to be a plumber, I’m just giving you an example. But just know that if you ever want to go to college, you’ll definitely have the money, maturity, and experience to do it. If it doesn’t work out, so what? You can go back to your secure job and make lots of money with zero debt to pay off (assuming you’re smart with your expenditures). That’s it. I’m trying to tell you that there are an infinite number of options other than college straight out of college.

I felt the same way when I was 17. I barely ended up graduating high school cuz I hated it. But then I worked a menial job living on my own for about 2 years and realized I wanted to get back to school. So I enrolled in community college, hustled my ass of and ended up transferring to a top university. Now I’m graduating and entering a top law school. Sometimes you don’t know what you want at 17 but later on you will figure it out! I recommend living on your own for at least a year to really get a glimpse of what life is like. It’s really easy to disregard things when you’re living in the comfort of your parent’s home and money. Also I’m a thrill seeker and I obviously didn’t expect any good amusement parks here with original rollercoasters and it gets boring very quickly... all they have is the same rollercoaster models because they’re cHeApEr! Wasted 5 years of my life going to this slavery training (aka. "school"). And after graduation, I ended up working without my degree anyway, since the degree only allows you to be a slave (aka. "employee"). Pro Tip: If you're forced to go to school, study the bare minimum to pass and use the rest of your time to figure out what to do, learn on your own and build a business...

Would you have felt it was a waste of time if the education was free?
@lake5044
@lake5044 3 жыл бұрын
@@dianaa3336 Absolutely. My education was free. For me, the issue is that you go to school without making an informed decision about it. You start when you're so little and later in life your parents/society make it a taboo to leave, especially if you have good grades. And they feed you lies about how it will be like when you finally graduate. But the truth is that school and employment are often very stressful places where you're obliged to abide by others' rules even when they make no sense or are degrading. I'm sure some rare classes/workplaces are humane, but every other one is simply the modern version of "you are my slave, I sign your graduation/paycheck and thus I can yell at you and humiliate you whether I'm right or wrong. And unless you wanna ruin your future and be homeless, you need to shut up and do as I said". In my experience, school and employment are seriously abusive and traumatizing, involving physical and emotional abuse. Don't get me wrong, I love learning, but people need to understand that the goal from school is not learning but rather simply preparing the person to be sold in the factory/office market of slaves.
@dianaa3336
@dianaa3336 3 жыл бұрын
Rational I completely agree with that. I have always felt that way. The thing for me is that I live in Sweden and the education here is free but if you don’t go it’s hard to find good jobs unless you start your own. I love learning aswell but the school system of teaching is just not for everyone. Even when one is employed and discussing pay raise has always bothered me, like you’re making a lot of money for this company. If I could go back I would get homeschooled and go from there. Exactly it is very stressful and traumatizing smh.

@@dianaa3336 I understand what you mean, and I'm sorry... But hey, it's never too late to escape slavery. And you don't really have to work in your country anyway, since most personal businesses are internet based. Whether you're still in school or employed, you can devote some of your time to building your own free future. It might take a year or two to get started, but it's doable and very rewarding. For me, I kept trying for about 3 years before I started making a living online. You just gotta try different things until you find something that works for you.

From the perspective of a US citizen, who went to college starting at age 24: I will say the ROI has not been substantial... I'm speaking for myself now, but I studied computer science: one of the most in demand disciplines on the job market. I was estranged to find out employers want much more than a CS degree from their potential candidates, they wanted real-world experience, which it seems college gave me none of. I got the basics of computer programming in college, but my growth has come from arduous practice of the discipline over and over.... and after 2 years of finishing my degree I'm finally landing my first software developer job, not because of my degree, but because I can actually build stuff now. College is a business much like anything else, and unfortunately marketing tailors towards people's weaknesses in alot of cases. What's our weakness in college marketing? Fear. Fear of not being accepted, falling behind, not being successful. Appreciate you calling it out for what it really is. You can learn anything on your own, and matter-of-fact you will be MUCH better off of you learn in your own discipline

the original point of college was to bring in brilliant people from various backgrounds, and have them research interesting problems. now it seems like they've devolved into siphons that prep people to the complacency involved in entering into the labor force, and people's perceived value and their self-worth is thus tied to the piece of paper that they get at graduation. sad, really.

"Internet has almost every human knowledge" Well, I thought the same way, but now, as a CS student, I can say that this isn't true. The further you go, the more specific information you need, and the less info about on the internet. So the internet is only good when you're beginning to learn something.
