I'm so glad I found this... My life is so so utterly FUCKED right now. About a month ago I came home and found that the person I'd been engaged to had left without a trace. I'm living at my parents now, pets are at another relatives (and miserable) & I'm wrestling with whether to go to school and become a nurse to honour the memory of my grandfather (stage 4 cancer) or sticking with my dream of writing and teaching yoga. It's not a sob story. It's not worse than anybody's else.... It's just my shit, right now. I'm happy to see that people care about this stuff.

Convince her by getting a part time job and showing self dispcipline and making an actual plan of what you want to achieve and why(just like when you present a business idea to a donor). If she see's your determination she might oblige. There are also many videos about this subject out there with statistics and stuff. Also I only think this plan works for countries where you have to pay a high university fee.

If you want to become a Doctor, Nurse, Lawyer (Not recommend but go ahead), Work in Academia (Also not recommended but do what you want with it), Engineer, Programmer (University and self-training is recommended for this one), Accountant, or anything that falls into the Hard Sciences, going to University is for you.

Working is stressful too but in a different way. In college, you set your own schedule. For working, you have to wake up early everyday, you can't party every night in a 8-5 job. You have to go to work or else they will fire you. In college, there is stress, but I had more free time usually during winter and summer. No such thing at a job. Im kind of glad I went through college. I stayed up late many nights to study for finals and spent many hours in a computer lab. It was definitely good memories because you will most likely never experience these types of things again once you start working so I suggest you stay in college. College is only 4 years of your life while working is 30+ years.

@@LivingLyfelikeaMuffin But what about when college absolutely makes you miserable! Some people have the privilege of taking breaks during college, but others have to work every hour they can get because they need to start paying off their massive loans on top of studying and stressing over grades all the time. College is such a financial risk. You're told nothing will let you make money unless it's being a doctor, lawyer, or engineer. But what if you can't handle the courses? Then would you risk paying for 4 years to earn a degree that has a higher chance of ending up useless, like psychology or english? Risk upon risk upon risk. And unavoidably misery. The college can dismiss you, too. I'm in engineering, and if I fail or drop from a class twice, I get booted. I wish I could find it in myself to work myself to the bone to pass every class, but I'm only human. I've failed two classes already but managed to pass the 2nd time. But I'm sick of that cycle. And I'm sick of college. But I have so many people around me who are so against me giving up college. I feel trapped. Also, getting a bachelors could end up taking more than 4 years if you're really struggling. Anyway, this was just me venting.. it's nothing personal...

From the age of 66, I completely agree with you. I have encouraged my grand daughter to travel and try herself out on whatever sparks her soul. She is currently 19 and has travelled all over Europe by herself, lived in Spain for a summer, been a mule packer/backwoods guide for a summer, managed a restaurant, started her own photography website and business, and now is working in a plant nursery and getting her real estate license. She has mingled with many types of people, followed her own soul and becomes a more capable and empowered human being from all that she does. You just keep following your heart. College and the debt incurred have become part of the declining economic mess we are in...I say, if college is needed for a specific goal, then fine. But as a general rule and right of passage for everyone to be a 'successful' person...FORGET IT.

A couple years after high school, I received a mass email from my old English teacher calling on people to join a panel to speak to his class about college/university life. I joined the panel as one of four and I was the only person that was a college dropout. I spoke about not going to college/university and encouraged the students to rethink their education and career. Well, the look on the teacher's face was priceless. He cut me off and ended the discussion when one of his more gifted students started getting intrigued and asked a lot of questions. That was 15 years ago, when the idea of self learning through the internet was a radical concept and I often doubted my decision for many years. I'm not saying don't go to college, there are some careers that require it. But not having a degree does not mean not having an education.

The workload I deal with in my other classes is too much and I just feel like I’m existing, I don’t feel like I’m really living the life I want. I made my decision to just take a gap year after this semester and just work on getting a job, a license, car, and a apartment cause it’s another thing that’s been bothering me for months.

@the ron Jaimes hahaha, not really, I just had the experience regarding this topic even before this video was made. Plenty of things can be done without wasting 4-5 of your best years of life to get a diploma. In some countries some universities simply don't deliver as much as they demand from students. I firmly believe that the school of life has far more to teach you than academia. Plus, just because one is a "college dropout" does not prevent him from constantly learning and taking various brief online courses. Internet is the greatest equalizer of 21st century

I'm 17 n I do feel like I am given freedom but what my parents expect of me, I feel like they wont see me meeting their expectations. Once I meet them they have new expectations. Idk I feel like university will somewhat give me freedom and help me build a new sense of maturity and responsibility. But I agree with all the points in this video. Its a rlly confusing road tbh. In my senior year of high school I didn't apply for college. My boyfriend at the time convinced me I should go to the 2 year institution he was going to. from then on I felt like I was never good enough and even transferred to a 4 year college, which I dropped out of after 1 semester. all in all, I'm right back where I started when I graduated high school. same job, same living situation, same dreams and aspirations... All of that college stuff ended up kind of just detaching myself from who I thought I was and I went though a lot of self loathing and confusion whereas before, when I had come freshfaced out of high school...I fucking loved myself. I had so much self love, and it all just kind of dwindled away when I decided to join my peers in the rat race. So definitely consider taking a gap year or a few and really care for yourself and find yourself. or if you dont want to do that, I would still recommend a 2 year institution where you can get an associates and it's a lot less risky because it's super cheap. I'm about to finish an associate in science which was a pretty basic, preparatory major for transfering and applying towards a bachelors degree. But I wish I didnt think that I had to get a bachelors degree or I was worthless. I wish someone had told me that it's not true and I dont need that to be worth something. Getting a bachelors degree in order to gain some sort of worth will probably only end up being a nightmare experience.

If you don’t know exactly what you want to study, don’t go to college. No ifs, ands, or buts. There’s no age limit to going to college, you have time. Get a full time job, maybe become a plumber and make $45,000 as an 18 year old. By the time you’re peers get out of college, you’ll be making almost $60,000 per year. You don’t have to be a plumber, I’m just giving you an example. But just know that if you ever want to go to college, you’ll definitely have the money, maturity, and experience to do it. If it doesn’t work out, so what? You can go back to your secure job and make lots of money with zero debt to pay off (assuming you’re smart with your expenditures). That’s it. I’m trying to tell you that there are an infinite number of options other than college straight out of college.

But then I worked a menial job living on my own for about 2 years and realized I wanted to get back to school. So I enrolled in community college, hustled my ass of and ended up transferring to a top university. Now I’m graduating and entering a top law school. Sometimes you don’t know what you want at 17 but later on you will figure it out! I recommend living on your own for at least a year to really get a glimpse of what life is like. From the perspective of a US citizen, who went to college starting at age 24: I will say the ROI has not been substantial... I'm speaking for myself now, but I studied computer science: one of the most in demand disciplines on the job market. I was estranged to find out employers want much more than a CS degree from their potential candidates, they wanted real-world experience, which it seems college gave me none of. I got the basics of computer programming in college, but my growth has come from arduous practice of the discipline over and over.... and after 2 years of finishing my degree I'm finally landing my first software developer job, not because of my degree, but because I can actually build stuff now. College is a business much like anything else, and unfortunately marketing tailors towards people's weaknesses in alot of cases. What's our weakness in college marketing? Fear. Fear of not being accepted, falling behind, not being successful. Appreciate you calling it out for what it really is. They don't generally don't produce anything in the short term OR long term. They sure do talk a lot, though. Meanwhile, they can't fill my molar, my sore throat, or fix my dog's broken leg. My job is incredibly fulfilling and I'll be starting my own business next month. Last year I was able to live in LA for 5 months and now I'm free to travel and work online anytime. This summer I'll be going to Chile. If you have a plan or an exit out of college, you should pursue it. If you're just a kid with no job or no plan, stay in school and do something on the side first. That's what I did. I started with freelance video editing

But this is totally different when you are came from a poor family background and literally dont have any capital to start anything like start a business or something, education is the easiest and the safiest way for u to increase your own value. Well maybe the fees might be abit expensive but u actually did learn something and have a certificate that can probably help u to get a job more easier. I also have some friends that start their business in the college and earn some money and have a good foundation but still get the degree. So IN MY OPINION ,i think the major factor is depends on how discipline you are and what is your plan about your future.
@samo6401
@samo6401 5 жыл бұрын
If you got the scholarships aka the good grades and stuff, sure, ill give you it. If you dont have the financial backing of that, you cant tell me you have the money to cover tuition but not enough to start a business or whatnot. Thats just not possible. If you mean to take out massive loans to go, youre a fool. All that said, there are skills you can learn online that if you put in the massive effort, you can freelance for a substantial price starting for free or less than $50 (Digital marketing, Ux design, programming, if you have a decent camera then brand cinematography, theres more). Shit, i mean if you really want to make this basic, hunker down with your parents if theyll let you, get a minimum wage job, keep your expenses as low as possible, and in a few months you should have enough to start a business. If your parents wont allow you to, get some roomates and split rent for a while. It doesnt take a stupid amount of money for most businesses. Get a job that you can bike to or at most have to take the bus or metro for, so you dont have to get a car and pay installments or gas or insurance. Lets say you earn $8 an hour. If you work for 40 hours a week, you make $320 a week, which is $1280 a month. Minus 15% on taxes (which might get wiped based on your income, but lets include them just for the thought) and minus lets say $150 for those work bonuses youre forced to pay for (in some jobs) , and you have $1280 - $342. Lets say you and 4 roomates split a $1200 rental (yea i know its not great but you do want to get out of this situation right?). Thats $1280 - $642. You can buy enough food for one person for the month with $150 and im being really generous. That leaves you with $488 at the end of the month. Most businesses you can start with $1000 to $5000 and the right skills. At most, in a year, youll have enough money. But again, you dont really need to do that. Theres plenty of skills you can just self educate on and freelance. Work for free, get some solid case studies or testimonials, and start charging the big money. Everyone has an excuse and its fine if people want to sit there and think of why they cant instead of being proactive, but its not fine anymore if youre promoting that people should go into crippling debt for a degree that may or may not actually help them too much

Doctor, Lawyer, Business, Accounting, any field that could get you a 6 figure salary you need a college degree. Taking the time and perservering through college is worth it in the end. @Chipmunk Self taught programmers honestly have a much tougher time getting a 6 figure salary compared to one with a degree. I've worked at various FANG companies as a software engineer in the bay area and rarely do I ever see self taught programmers make it far in the company. I know for a fact that most interviewers, at least the ones I've conversed with at FANG are heavily biased against self taught programmers. Only ones I've heard even being considered for an interview are those with insane/impressive personal projects they've done over the years and even then they still have it rough. Point being that it is usually a much better option to pursue a degree in CS rather than self teaching yourself. This is simply because the job market is hugely competitive these days with CS being one of the fastest growing majors. In a decade the amount of people in the job market with CS degrees will be so vast that the majority of new self taught programmers wanting a CS job will be essentially ignored as they will become obsolete.

But there's an almost no knowledge on the internet that'll let you become a master in something.

I completely agree for most B.A. majors (bachelor of arts), but I would say college is fundamental for most B.S. majors (bachelor of science). You can totally teach yourself most scientific concepts , but as far as working in the field and contributing to society, I feel much better knowing a criteria has been met for doctors, chemists, physicians, biologists, ecologists, etc. These are the people healing us, protecting us, guiding us, and telling us what is going on in the world around us and why.

@@alexandercerreno8329 Sure, that's true. But how many jobs that "require" college degrees actually need one? So many positions require a degree when the work doesn't need someone who has a college education. Most of the work can just be taught during training. I think the issue is with the structure of our job market on a much larger-scale. Too many jobs only hire those with degrees for positions that really don't require one. Soon, a bachelor's degree is going to be worthless, and positions will only be available to those with master's. That's seriously messed up, when you consider the type of work that these people are doing... to have to go school for upwards of six years with tens of thousands of dollars in debt for jobs that aren't exactly specialized. It's sad. (And I'm not talking about careers that are super specialized, like in the medical field). I'm just saying that a lot of jobs can be taught through apprenticeships/training. Half of the education we receive in college is not relevant or necessary. Just filler classes as a way for the schools to get money out of you.

You create (lucky) opportunities by working hard and continuing when everyone else stops. If you give up because you can't take the consequence of your failure, you lose. When you push through a situation where most people will stop, you win. And this dude probably won a lot of those battles to get to the point in his life where he is now. Not trying to hate on you but a lot of people get this wrong because they never experienced this. Everybody is capable of doing a lot of things and it's up to you how far you get in life.

@Chipmunk That's why research is necessary before you make those types of decisions. If you feel you can teach yourself more about coding than a university, great. But research will tell you that a vast majority of jobs in the IT field require a bachelor's degree. If you feel you can learn more about painting in an art school, great. But research will tell you that a degree isn't needed to advance in that career (translating to a waste of money). Ultimately, it all depends on what you decide for yourself, and the risks involved. Getting a degree doesn't mean you're guaranteed to get hired, or that the world owes you anything.

And when I say exhausted, I mean exhausted in probably all the ways possible. 4 years of cramming information into my brain to effectively take and pass exams, and add to that my odd sleeping and eating habits at the time🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️. I honestly feel I mistreated a part of my youth, and I wasnt even partying lol. Idk how you even add that part considering everything else you're doing. I guess some people look to college as the best part of their 20's....but I would have much rather spent it doing what I actually love...like traveling and experiencing cultures and people and learning more about my own beliefs. Don't get me wrong, God blessed my life with all kinds of learning experiences and it was all well worth it🙏🏼 but I'd do things a little differently with what I know now. And yeah, college is also biased in its instruction and delivery of information. I had to unlearn maaaaany things I learned in HS and college, especially when I started to pay closer attention to my own personal values and beliefs. Guess I'm not as liberal as I was taught to be, and I'm glad I eventually figured that out for myself🙏🏼

I went to college for a week and decided I didn’t like it at all and then after I went to a vocational school, got a job and worked as a dental assistant ( I hated the job so much) and left. I work now in a restaurant serving. I come from an Asian background so I’m really glad that my parents are so chill as long as I have a job I can do what ever. Most Asian parents are very strict with their children, make them get good grades and get into top schools so they have a better life in the future. My aunt is one of them unfortunately, trying to force me to get back to school even when I don’t want to. She calls me whenever Im not busy and gives me a lecture about life etc. Everyone is different in their own ways. 😄
