I'd say paint the oil tank black to get some solar gain to help thaw the water, or even wrap the tank is a black t-shirt or put a black wool cap over it. But it won't matter once you have a roof over your processor. Maybe there is a way to funnel heat from the engine, or move the oil tank near the engine. Also, like fuel tanks, keep them full in the winter to prevent condensation.

Best suggestion - Always leave the Oiler Tank Full when not in use for longer periods. That Ice is all Condensation collecting inside the tank. You can add a small 2/3-way valve and short hose to drain collected water sitting in the bottom of a tank(Not Frozen)

Either the cap is leaking or just like with vehicles where it is best to keep tank full in the winter for condensation... Something as simple as a mud flap or bucket over the oil jug might help with future issues. Have a great day, Joe!

G’morn’n Joe! I use HEET, the Red bottle of isopropyl fuel line antifreeze in hydraulic systems for winter service. Alcohol will effect equal parts of water, so if you add about 1 or 2 ounces per gallon of oil capacity, you should stay ahead of your condensation. If used regularly throughout the cold season, it should prevent this sort of issue. Bless’ns to you kind sir, Tedd

Hi Joe - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. I hate to see snow lying on valuable machinery as it gets into every nook and cranny. Your chain appeared somewhat loose so I guess you adjusted it before getting started. If the oiling issue is persistent in cold weather it wouldn't take much to make the container quick detactable to enable you to store it indoors. I admired your beautiful skies in Ohio that day.
@waynebarnett7467

@big Rodders Making the oil tank detachable is a great idea. You could remove the tank , set it in the cab of your truck , warm it right up.

I definitely agree. A simple water shut off ball valve, like is used on most water fittings, would be an easy fix. A couple of hose clamps like is already on the Japa, automotive style, and problem solved. Fill the tank after each use as well would help. Sure, it would take a couple of minutes and adds time, but you wait for the Japa to warm up anyways. Still a great processor even with a small inconvenience. Joe, you definitely know the Japa and keep an eye on the small things to keep it running at its best and keep great care of your equipment. All great qualities to have and you show all the while being honest and transparent. 👍🏻👍🏻

I saw a comment on winter bar oil. I use this type of bar oil for all seasons. Most in my region do that. Another comment was on winter diesel. I had a diesel pickup for 30 years and it ran better with winter diesel in cold weather. Not sure if it would make a difference for your small diesel engine.

Being from mn i remember alot of time when it was 20 below and nice out id go mess with the processor. Biggest trick to keeping condensation out of the oil tank is fill it up when your done for the day. Same thing would happen with the dyna 16 i have.. the multitech i never had an issue with it. I was in the hardwood lumber business for 35 years. Try loading your deck without putting logs on top of each other. Just lay them side-by-side and I think you will find you will eliminate some grunt work and you’ll still process just as fast. Too much weight on those chains could snap your head shaft.

They make a water drain for tanks. Usually, it's just a rubber gromet that goes into a drilled hole. Pressing the barbed fitting with the drain into the gromet locks it in place. Make sure your tank is empty if you go this route.😉

I noticed a little spot of rust on the 'chute'. If you are going to leave the machine unused in the weather for several days, you could use an old paint brush with some used motor oil to weatherize it. That's what we use on our farm. Just a little will do the trick. Happy New Year to you and your family. May 2024 be an even better year!

Good Sunday morning joe yeah we haven’t really had a winter here in ohio last couple years but on the note of the ice would think moisture in the tank since it was on the bottom of the tank and top of the line ? Good choice on a Allen key not a stick 👍 I would drain that oil and put fresh in since it was down there anyway (low) I’m sure that tank just unbolts. If it’s really cold and haven’t used my splitter in little time I put a little buddy heater under the tarp to warm all fluids up a bit since I keep it covered anyway since my 30tn countryline is all I have 👍

Bro, dont go another winter without cover for your machines,,,and,,, why not look after your feet a little bit and buy yourself a thick rubber matt where you stand operating the jappa 405,,,, your feet, knees and legs will say thank you.

I do have a roof in the plans. I think a cushioned mat could help but I also would say the platform is springy, has some give to it

I hope you get those logs cheap, there's got to be better stuff out there. I don't trust many people.

? I get them from the loggers via a log truck. Seems to be all the same, or very close...different species etc.

I'm surprised it's a chainsaw, I expected a direct drive round blade like a skill saw

Those circular wheels are only on the bigger machines. I think the 405 is described as a mid range. The thing I have learned with processing logs is the bigger logs usually go to the mills. The skinnier ones get into the firewood market

You know, Joe if you keep getting dirty doing that kind of stuff, you’re standing too close to the work.

I don't remember ever saying I'm a smart business man. I do believe the best way to describe my business acumen is "don't follow me, I'm lost."
