On the Combat setting, only the Slats (the surfaces on the front of the wing) move. They increase the turn rate because they get more air over the top of the wing. Only on the Takeoff and Landing settings the Flaps (the surfaces on the trailing edge) come down. Besides the Slats, you get the blown flaps (which I don’t remember if it’s in game) but that uses the engine to blow air across the wing too

A few things about the F-104S. 1: You're the fastest plane on the deck, but you *also* have a bonkers climbrate. When you stay on the deck, you're completely throwing away this advantage. Take it up to mach .9, then climb as steeply as necessary to maintain that. This should get you up to 10-12km quite quickly, which is where your top speed is the highest. If you stay above mach, missiles fired from below will really struggle to catch you. You also burn fuel more efficiently at higher alts, meaning you often actually have more fuel left than most of the oppoents you face as the game drags on. 2: The AIM-9Bs actually aren't so bad, especially if you launch them from a low AoT (angle off tail), low G load, and with a high RoC (Rate of Closure) and/or with a significant altitude advantage. If you combine these factors, you can launch on and kill someone who's over 6km away, even with just the AIM-9Bs. That being said, AIM-9Bs are generally garbage at top tier. 3: Your flaps are good. Really good. The combats are actually just leading-edge slats, which allow for an extra G or so of pull. This is historically accurate according to pilot accounts, and I haven't found an airspeed restriction anywhere for them in the manuals I have access to. This setting can be really helpful for pulling enough lead to get a shot in an attack run. I've made lots of kills I would have missed without them. Next, your takeoff flaps are good until nearly 1000kph, and they can also provide a really good lift boost if you've gotten yourself mixed up in a maneuvering fight (though frankly this is a mistake you should be doing your best to avoid). Finally, there's the landing flaps. A lot more fragile, ripping at 5-600kph, but incredible in terms of the lift boost. As you reach or appraoch the apex of a turnaround (like at 4:21), go ahead and just pop landing flaps. You'll get the nose around a lot quicker. When you learn how to use these flaps, you can match and/or beat a F-4EJ in a maneuvering fight. I had a 3-4 minute long fight that I sustained and eventually won because the EJ ran out of fuel. This is strictly a last resort, and will leave you very vulnerable to any other enemies in the area, but you can do it.

@@JeppPlays wtf do you mean the YS is kinda? It cant face 10-10.3 anymore so it is the best subsonic jet at its tier. It is an amazing climber and dogfighter, and the only thing that bests it is the f-104A/C, and even then you can just corkscrew them off you and beat them over the head when they slow down trying to hit you. The only downside to the YS is it's fragile damage model and high repair cost.

2:47 Combat flaps on the 104 were true mach1 manoeuvring tools, with the engine actually blowing air on the upper side to increase the lift noticeably. Above 650knots an F-104G should turn about the same of an unslatted Phantom II (B-C-D-J), and above mach 1 it would turn rings around any other jet of the era except the F106A. A curiosity is that the flight manual tells to "always keep the engine on military while landing" (slowing down with air brakes) because of the massive increment in lift the blown flaps would provide to the plane. BTW, in game we have and F-104S which is actually a Fighter Bomber version: I expect to see fighter version soon, with no guns, aim 9J/L and Sparrows (or may be even Aspide.

I have nearly researched all the modifications on the f104s and I should say that it was not that bad of an experience and I find it really fun. I simply use it as a bNz fighter, at the beginning of the match I side-climb and then at 8-10 km start to target the most vulnerable aircraft and I dive on it and if I fail to kill it I simply accelerate, most of the time u can evade the missiles being at 1.10 Mach better at 1.15 at sea level(1.25 at any altitude ) which could be difficult at the beginning but still doable. Also the aim9b are extremely usefull to force your target to do evasive manouvres and so reduce it's speed. With those aams I destroyed a lot of mig21 and f4c that were too much focused on lock their missiles on their targets!

The combat flaps in F104 are in the fron of the wings, so that may be the reason why they are not ripping.

The reason why the combat flaps don’t break is becuase they aren’t flaps they are slats which are on the front of the wing, this causes less drag than flaps and allows the combat flaps/slats to not break off

The F-104J *should* be able to mount AIM-9P (essentially J's), but Gaijin seems to be holding off. They were given the documentation showing that it could mount FOUR missiles, but still only gave it two because they "couldn't find photographic evidence", even though it's literally in the manual. Ironic as Taiwan bought a great many F-104's from Japan and they mount the J in theirs.

I've been playing this thing approximately 110 times now and it is starting to get a good plane, if you believe me or not. You gotta get used to it and have to like its kind of flying characteristics, but then you can get managed to get three kills average if none of the enemies decides to chase you forever. You can make these missiles useful, if you make the enemy bleed of its speed and then get below the 1.3km range, in which it is almost a safe kill. If not, the guns are good enough to do the job.

@@keatonhare7691 RWRs can give warnings when it senses active radar but mostly it gives warnings when you specifically are locked first by the aircraft then by the missile. Also, it wouldn't do much in this game as RWRs are strictly radar and we don't currently have any radar tracking missiles in game (as far as I know. It's been awhile since I played) so the only warning an RWR would give is when someone locks you

If you like the support role try the Super mystere, M.D 452 either version, or M.D 450 version. They are all underdog support planes that can be lots of fun, I really like the M.D 452 because it has the best performance out of all the jets listed that's just me

I know that he's playing the 104S and it doesn't go down to 8.7, but those C's and A's slaughter everything in their path. Playing a G.91 R/3 against these is literally hell because they can't turn, and have horrible energy retention. Therefore turning is a no-no.

Ive actually really enjoyed myself in the F-104J. It gets 2 Aim-9Es which are loads better than the Aim-9Bs you get on the F-104S, but I think Ive only gotten a handful of AAM kills so far and I have almost spaded it. I dont know if the S gets a different fuel load, but I am yet to run out of fuel with my 36min F-104J load. So far the 104 does not win clutch games unless its against another F-104 - Ive had a few games where Ive won a 1v1 at the end of a match vs F-104Ss. The best Ive had so far is a 5 kill 1v4 game in my J vs an F-100, a Mig-21, and two Mirages. I used the clouds to break lock on AAMs, and only engaged in head-ons. The F-100 ran out of fuel chasing me and crashed, I got the Mig and first Mirage in head ons, and I flat-spun the second Mirage over his AF with my final rounds. I RTB'd thinking he would crash, credit to him he recovered and landed. Unfortunately by the time I landed and took back off he got me with an AAM when I was only at 500kmph after takeoff.

It's the same with the la 9 in wt 5.7\6.0 br is too high for it because it often faces tempests/1bbearcats mk22 and 24griffon spifires also the p51h and a2d1 the la 9 should be at 4.7 to 5.0 because it performs slightly better than the la7 because of the guns

That was the ASA. It was an upgrade to the F104S. But the F104S didnt have a Gun in real life, so i would say we cant complain

Serkay64 :3 no that was the F-104S, which received the Aim9L in 1980, the ASA version was mainly a system upgrade but it came starting from mid 80s.. also yes the F-104s always had a gun, there was simply the option to remove it in order to fit more payload.. you should check some things before commenting, I did, I knew an itAf F104 pilot and aim9b were used only till 1976/77.. after that they were considered just obsolete, reason why Italian F-104 were always armed with aspide missiles (which can be compared to aim7 but with improved guidance system)

Serkay64 :3 also, the ASA and ASA-M were not different aircraft, they were always F104S but with upgrades in the systems of the aircraft.. ASA stands for (aggiornamento sistema d’arma/ weapon systems update) so it’s not another variant, it’s the same plane just more adequate to stay in service till 2004

Yeah it's not really competitive but is 800kph faster than the F100d and still gets to fight early Korean war era Jets that don't even get missiles. I'm willing to bet it's even faster than the Phantom's.
