Post management is a real pain and we are only sailing May to Sept. Fortunately we have a very helpful neighbour.

Bank cards only get delivered to your home address so there is only one way to collect them. It is not like you can manage without a bank card in this country where everything is just done remotely using the card. My own stupid fault🙃

Eh problems problems problems. That storm Ashley was something else, just constant very strong wind for 24 hours. Even in a house it was bad so I feel for you onboard Salty Lass. I was down in Bangor this afternoon taking some photos but couldn’t spot the SL anywhere.

Believe it or not, we are in plain view from the marina building right in front of the Fisheries vessel. Storm Ashley was loud, but otherwise easy compared to some we have been in.

I feel your pain…glad your laughing. We use our drivers lic for our day to day I’d. Went to use it last week at a bank and was shocked when I was gently told it expired. We laughed and the bank was good (one I never used before) and gave me the money I needed. 🇨🇦

Drivers licence is often an alternative here too, but so much had just expired at the same time. It really was a pain. Good news about your bank. I guess that although it was expired it was still good enough to act as an ID

Definitely a tricky one. Many/most UK marinas are not for residential use and may breach planning so marinas cautious about liveaboards. Local Council may take a keen interest if they know facilities being used for residential purposes and seek to charge residents Council Tax etc. Our house is rented out so we are no longer registered at that address on the Electoral Role. We were refused a car hire collection as company could not verify our address on the Electoral Role. They had accepted the booking online including our driving licence details but refused after we'd travelled to the collection point. Also aware that our status with local NHS practice is precarious; believe they should deregister you after 3-months. Luckily most things can be dealt with online .. but for those things that can't, we have a very trusted friend; we use her address, she opens all our mail. You ask a very good question.
@SailingYachtSaltyLass22 сағат бұрын
We maintain our address and are still registered there so that takes care of the electoral roll and the doctor, but it is something that required a bit of planning 😮 and still is not totally satisfactory.

Actually you have raised a good topic/issue not only for yacht/boaty people but nomads in general. Bring a grey land based nomad in Australia is a common activity for retired people some of which have sold their homes to roam. So the permanent address also needed here remains a conundrum for many. Btw just to add to the printer thing, I have found making scans of important documents a lifesaver, these are then stored digitally either in the cloud or on a hard drive or both preferably. Enjoyed the chat, best.😊
@SailingYachtSaltyLass5 күн бұрын
We actually keep some documents aboard because, as you say, it is easier that way but electronic copies are never a bad thing either. Interesting about the grey nomads. It seems that govt.s do not like their citizens being free to move around too much...

When we first started looking at living aboard it was one of my headaches. However at our marina we have a liveaboard contract costs more than the standard contract, but our legal address is our boat at our marina, all post comes here. It's recognised by the banks, DWP, HMRC, etc. Solves all the headaches. We still need a printer though 😊, as I used to own a print shop I had a big choice when I packed it in.
@SailingYachtSaltyLass5 күн бұрын
Good for you, but in a way being in a fixed marina helps - it is a permanent address of a sort. Having said that, we know of a local liveaboard here who has real issues with some local govt services because they refuse to accept the marina as an address, but what we also were thinking of going off on a long term cruise. Generally we go off for 6 months at a time and then sort through piles of mail at the flat when we get back. If we were going for (say) years or permanently then what would we do?
@MyAvaGrace5 күн бұрын
@@SailingYachtSaltyLass as along term cruiser it is a problem. If we were to go away for years then same as you We would use my daughter's address. We went away this time for 4 months. Post wasn't an issue they just packed it together for us. I think bigger issues revolve around cars. Our marina were fine with me leaving ours parked up. I had to make sure the MOT was done before we set off. I did have to have it done 2 months before due date. My insurance is all online so sorted that while we were in Scotland. One of our friends here have had as issue with their bank, but the banks we use were fine. Even the courts were ok with our address while we were executors for Janet's moms estate.
@SailingYachtSaltyLass5 күн бұрын
We sold our car before setting off so that sorted that out 😄 We kept it initially but with not being driven for months at a time bits just seized up on it. Banks are a problem because when you have a bank card issued they can be fussy about the address and my new UK passport _had_ to be delivered by hand, in person to our registered address. It is stuff like this that puts the obstacles in the way.

I left the UK a few years ago in my camper and didn't come back for about 7 months. It was only when I returned that I found out that on the way to the ferry to leave, I got zapped by a speed camera, received a letter asking if I was driving, receiving another the same and then a third, then a warning to court, a second warning, then finally a notice that I'd been found guilty at court and the total fine was £1700 and my licence was suspended! There was also a few letters from a court appointed collection agency asking for the fine money and their fees had added over £500 to the total. Luckily I petitioned the court to take into account my situation and eventually they unsuspended my licence and dropped the fine to £600. The collection agency was out of the window so they never got a penny. Phew!
@SailingYachtSaltyLass6 күн бұрын
Yikes. It does illustrate the problem and if I had not noticed my issues I would likely have wound up in a similar situation. I'm glad you got something of a resolution 👍

To think we were in France when you were filming this. Seems eons ago. Can’t believe UK won’t recognise Bangor as a bona fide uk address 😮

It is the marina that causes the issue. Because the boat is not fixed it is not a permanent address

You think you had problems it’s now Saturday and the first time I get to see your video some 3 days late. When I used to live in Liverpool Marina I had so much fun with the “where do you live” issue. A long storey about being stopped for speeding in Oregon miles from anywhere, when the police officer refused to believe I lived on the boat and actually got the police station to ring the marina to confirm ( in short), it goes on and on.

Hello ladies. Never seen a jiggly hose before - does the flow stop when your tank is full ?
@SailingYachtSaltyLass4 күн бұрын
No. It stops when the upper container is empty. In this video that would be the black diesel container. We have adapted the "standard" one we bought since the diesel makes the plastic hose harden and then it kinks. So we pulled it off and got some reinforced boat piping and clamped the jiggy valve with a stainless steel clip. This is slowly hardening but at least it does not kink!
