Biss... Joe is not human. he is death trying out humanity. so everything we take as common is completely new to him. so you should expect him to seem strange in every behavior he exhibits.

This is a remake of a 1934 movie, Death Takes a Holiday, which was based on the 1924 Italian play La Morte in Vacanza by Alberto Casella. It is a bit existential to be translated well to general consumption cinema. But I like Anthony Hopkins and Claire Forlani's performances. Brad is a bit distant to the point of insignificance, but I get where he was going with it. Death is never a welcomed guest...until he is.

"Meet Joe Black" is a film that lingers in your heart long after the credits roll. It’s a beautiful meditation on life, love, and the inevitability of death. The story unfolds with a gentle, deliberate pace, allowing the characters' relationships to develop in a way that feels both tender and profound. Brad Pitt's portrayal of Death discovering humanity is hauntingly beautiful, capturing both the innocence and gravity of his role. Anthony Hopkins delivers a performance full of grace and wisdom, portraying a man facing the end of his life with dignity and reflection. The film’s exploration of love, both romantic and familial, is deeply touching, reminding us of the preciousness of every moment we have with those we care about. It’s a movie that invites you to reflect on what truly matters, leaving you with a sense of bittersweet serenity.

Anthony Hopkins' storyline in the film did resonate, but the romance between Susan and Joe is not compelling at all and the final lines between them at the very end of the movie are extremely bad. Biss you entered the movie from a different door. Brad Pitt in that cafe was just being himself. You immediately called him a charlatan and a manipulator. The movie had no chance with you at that moment. You didn’t even blink when he died. WOW! That moment has become a part of my family’s vocabulary. When Hope, or Possibilities, are suddenly taken away. We call it ‘Brad Pitted’.

Yeah, I'm pretty disgusted with Biss from this reaction. Seeing how jaded she is and hateful of an honest man with integrity and having a real conversation at the coffee shop. I literally would be Joe having a nice conversation with a lady at a coffee shop like Joe, and these crazy woke feminists come out with "eeeewwwwwww! He gives me the "ick". He's a manipulator!" Wow, never thought Biss would already be an angry cat lady at 28, but wow. This attitude is extremely unattractive, just FYI Biss. Maybe the lockdowns made you forget how to interact with other humans. I hope you learn what good men are and maybe listen to your dad or other good men in your family to help you with what your anger-fear issues are.

I've read most of the comments but this is the one I most agree with. Making assumptions about a character straight away without any reason and not letting the character develop is a cynical way to view a movie. Definitely a sign of leading with distrust. Usually comes from betrayal in the past or significant fear of betrayal. Brad did nothing to indicate that he was a bad guy in the beginning. A good example of how often people can see what doesn't exist then judge and start to act towards a person in a distrustful way which, when they respond to that, "confirms" to you who they were all along. Its something she really needs to work on and not take into relationships in the future.

34:16 -- The idea here was that she's seeing him for all his darkness, she's seeing all the shadows and demons inside. She's seeing him for who he really is. He's revealed everything to her in that moment and yet despite all that she still loves him. Its supposed to be a poetic, romantic, and tragic moment at all at once. She sees the darkness inside, and still loves him. Still sees Joe. Its a beautiful message for a man especially... that a woman can see the darkest part of you and still love you anyways. Its hard to find that these days. certainly not impossible, but very rare. I think sometimes ppl forget that men want to be loved this unconditionally too. That we know we're fuhked up inside sometimes, but we're hoping that we might find someone who sees the good and the bad and still chooses to love us... We want someone to see us for who we are... not what we are...

@@mnomadvfxif the story was about her rejecting him she would have walked away, or even verbally said she can't be with him. But instead she acknowledged she was afraid of what he was and then concluded that despite what he was, who he was to her was Joe... The man she loved... She can't go with him, she won't go with him, but that doesn't change the fact that she loves him. Hence the tragedy of their situation. As much as she loves him she has to let him go. The fear does stop the love, the fear merely makes her understand the reality of their situation. You can't help who you love, even if who you love is Death lol

this happens when the viewer is to critical/analytical to what they see :D and biss is that kind of reactor, she has an exellent intuition and loves to find mistakes and solve the plot. And when you first find one fault, you find another and another and another. And this being a 90s movie and slow burn, its quite another time of movie making. And this movies is a weird blend of reality and fantasy, that if your brain dont accept it or being open from the get go, it will feel weird and out of place. Bliss loved The Mummy for example, that is that same kind of 90s acting, but the premise is that its an fantasy and cool silly action. For me I discovered this movie about 5y ago, and with me being a 90s kid I loved it. Its no out of the world acting, movie making, or amazing never been told story. But it peak 90s acting/romcom, its lovely scenes and carried by a great cast. That is perfect in their simple roles, but give the roles so much more than what an avreage actor would be able to do. This was just not her kind of movie :)

This is actually a remake of "Death Takes A Holiday". Death is curious about why people are so terrified of him. So, he inhabits the body of a man who recently died, in order to learn about life. Death doesn't kill people. He's essentially the angel who escorts our souls on the next phase of our journey. When he was first speaking to the old woman in the hospital, I think he showed her that fact. That's why she became so peaceful toward the end of that conversation. And, yes, I'm one of those who feels that this movie is a masterpiece of modern cinema.

Back when i was a little girl, It was common for little girls to see mom and dad kissing and think that is how male and female kiss. MOST dads, of course, didn't want to kiss daughter exactly how they kissed mother, so they keep lips together and have a peck kind of kiss with daughter. It was extremely common back then before society decided it was horrible and he must be abusing her etc even though he wasn't. A lot of dads are afraid of even being alone with their daughters now. I understand the fear and I understand the guardedness of society, but not all dads want to diddle their daughters.

I didn't like this movie either. I watched it after seeing a clip on KZbin and reading comments about how good it was. But Idk, the romance was strange and felt forced, the ending had a lot of problems and was hard to enjoy due to that. And the movie felt like it was an hour too long, with every scene and dialogue (or lack thereof) lingering on for far too long. I normally like a slow, thought-provoking movie, but idk this one just felt strange all around. I will say, Anthony Hopkins' scenes were great and I loved his character, and I did like the dynamic with him and his daughters, especially at the party. :)

He's not able to tell her who Joe is, despite it being pretty important if she might be considering marriage or such with him. At the end, how does she know her dad died? Through all of it she sensed what was actually happening. She knew her dad, and she could probably read it from his actions and every facial expression. That's my theory. We know that nothing in the entire Star Wars genre, or Lord Of The Rings, could ever happen. Of course she is honest about her own dislike. But she is also cynical, jaded, & sour faced for someone so young. This film is intriguing & fun. That doesn't mean she has to like it, of course. But she needs to lighten up for fs. I would say this is a movie about life and the act of dying. So many people asked themselves "What would I do and feel if I knew i was going to die in the next day/days?". The shift of perspective about what is really important to you, what you do leave behind, the people you were able to touch and grow with over the time... Recently, a member of my family passed away. We knew, including her, that her time was coming, because some diseases are just to relentless to overcome. During her last 2 years, she tryed to do everything to be remembered, to be able to help, to be present in the moment, while we just made sure that she knew that she was very loved and appreciated, in every chance we had. Now she lives through us, with everything she taught us, every moment shared, every laughter, every memory. We spend so much time and energy after money, along the phases of life, that most of us forget that the most unique and important currency that any of us have, is actually time. So, like you said, make the best of your time with whoever you choose to spend it with. A truly beloved character of mine has 2 sayings that describe very well this movie. One is "-Death is just another path, one we all must take." and "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that was given to us.". About your reaction, I do believe that how we feel can drastically change the outcome of our opinions about movies, books, well, everything. But with those two medias, how we feel, and the moment we are going through life, can really turn your enjoyment up or down. I would suggest that you give this movie another chance in the future, you might have a change of heart about it (even though the kissing in the mouth between family members is for sure really wierd). A recomendation I can give you is to watch the movie "Collateral Beauty", with Will Smith and great cast. It has a much faster pace, it isn't as long as this for a movie and it talks about so many important themes. In any case, thank you again for your reaction and your sincerity. Keep up with the great work! Ps: english is not my first language, so, I'm sorry for any mistakes!

Only one thing I see in lots off in the commends I partly agree with,(and not just by you Biss so don't take it personally) Reactions of women tend to be downgrading every mans character a lot, while the female character is of the hook. In the opening scene Brad immediately was a charlatan and a manipulator, while he was single. Susan is in a relationship and she flirting like that?!? That's one small double standard for me....

The romance was meh however the concept was one I was on board with and had Martin Brest developed that more, this would have been a much better movie however he had Final Cut and wasn’t going to trim it down and tighten it up. If my friend has a constant stream of negative comments and complaints, I could only stand being around that for a short time... I would tell them maybe it's better if one of us leaves... So i just turned off at 15 minutes.... Next.. I didn't like movie much at first. Thought it was just ok entertaining. Then I watched it through the eyes of another reactor and started getting a little appreciation for it. It's good to see something through other people's eyes... Good or bad...
