The first idea that came to mind was maybe doing a daily/weekly/or monthly no-buy tracker that you can mark off with stickers instead of pen/marker. That way you can reward yourself by using another sticker, or maybe even stickers you wouldn't normally use, like dots. Might be fun. Or maybe too tedious. 😅

I'm not doing a no-buy. I tried it, and for me it was an arbitrary period of deprivation. Instead, I set a budget and stay within it. Now I'm happy again 😊

When I'm struggling with not buying something I like, I try to look around my house and I find similar things or other objects that will serve the same purpose. For example, I was itching to buy a new large standing pencil case to take on the go, as my current standing pencil case doesn't fit my daily washi tapes. So then I looked around my house and I found a cute tiny pouch I forgot I bought recently and I used that to store my daily washi and take on the go. It felt great to use things I hadn't even used yet after purchase, and find ways to solve my problems in that very moment without paying for it!

Can you block certain sites on your device/browser? Maybe parental controls? You could block Amazon and prevent yourself from buying there that way. Another thing I've seen people do was to "unremember" bank details/card info on Amazon so they have to get up and get their card if they want to purchase something and that will hopefully help them realise that they shouldn’t buy anything (this doesn’t work for me though, I unfortunately have my card info memorised).

Amazon is one of my problem spending areas (or no problem spending), so I'm working on a low-buy there: I load my cart up during the month with my few needs and mostly wants, then once a month I go through the cart and save some items for later, discard others, and purchase only a few. I don't get the dopamine rush of opening multiple deliveries, but I do enjoy stacking things in my cart and then deleting them. 😄

My stationery low buy went well in January, but I completely blew it when seeing a VP that I wanted. I made an exception because it was limited edition, and I use my VP every day. I think that my regular purchases over the year will be less than my budget, so I will probably be able to save enough in the event that this situation happens again. Staying off social media and finding contentment with my system has helped me stay focused though

For your no buy…could you find a way to combine the use your stuff with it? For instance, have a designated row on your weekly where you add a sticker if you DON’T use Amazon. With a label, it becomes visible, plus you get to add new stickers for decor and tracking purposes. A double win!

I’ve been doing an unofficial no buy. But needed a new planner for the new year. Bought a cheap $15 planner for Target. Was proud of myself for not spending $60-$100 lol. Ugh. I started using the planner and there are so many issues. Boxes not aligned, extra pages, missing pages and dates. Nope I can’t deal with that it was stressing me out. So I just ordered an EC. At least I know it will be functional and my accessories work in it etc. I did resist buying any new stickers or washi etc for it. I have plenty 😊

I think part of it is it's hard to have a negative reward, a reward for not doing something. You get the reward of finishing something from using your shit, but there's no feedback from not spending money. So maybe put a dollar in jar when you stop yourself from buying something. Or big gold stars on a calendar for every day you dont spend. I don't know. But make not spending into an action and I think it will be more front of mind for you.

I would absolutely love to hear your review of the Laurel Denise planner where you see the monthly/weekly/daily views all at once. Seems intriguing, but also potentially overwhelming or gimmicky 🤷🏻♀️😅

Ugh. So sorry for your continued health challenges. 🥺Sending good vibes. ❤️🩹 I am joining you with a second stationery no-buy year and doing very well. The only new stationary item from last year was gifted to me (a Levenger disc notebook). In January, I ended up choosing a washi that had a LOT left, so I didn’t finish until into a week into February, but yay? For February, I chose a florals set from LLP and finished the sheet, so I added another and finished that too. I had added a washi, and again, chose a full one, so at this writing (last week of the month), I’ve finished all the washi too. Whew. I agree that using those stickers is exciting!

January I was able to complete a no buy for planner items. Feb, I fell off the wagon. I ordered the Sterling Inc and Wonderland 222 b6 planners to see which one I like better. My classic HP and I are just not getting along. I did also buy some stickers. But my less buy on Amazon is going well.

I've been doing a low-buy/use your shit as well! I did a great job resisting things and waiting. I didn't use anything up but I did use the hell out of a bunch of stuff! I also reorganized things to know better what I have and make it easier to find/use things. You can also reuse those ink cartridges once they run out. Syringes make the refilling really nice.

I keep track of my spending on a monthly calendar, and when I have a no-spend day, I get to put a sticker on that day. Silly, yes, but it sure does feel great to put that sticker on.

I'm a fountain pen person and my advice is to stick to the vanishing point pen and cartridges exclusively! Sure, there's lots of fun inks to try and pens come in all shapes and sizes and colors, but if you keep it as simple as possible with one pen and one ink (when you really don't need to clean thoroughly between cartridges), it should help you stick to using your nice pen.

I am doing a no buy from Amazon in February unless it's a necessity like a new router. I have done a no-buy except list for journals and books. I can't purchase another journal unless it has a certain design on the cover. And I'm not purchasing any new books unless they are for book club or my business. So I'm still able to purchase these items but it's limited to what I need because I have tons of notebooks and tons of books on my shelf and Kindle.

I admire how well you've done with your stationary no buy. I failed miserably last year. I changed to a low buy this year and still struggling with that but I'm do much better then last year so I'm feeling like its a win so far. What size nib did you get in your vanishing point? I hope you start feeling better soon! I'm sorry the start of 2024 has been so rough.

I’m shocked at how well I’m doing on my no buy! I’ve kind of combined it with my use your shit. Any time I find myself about to buy something, I stop and go look to see what I have and try to use that. This includes craft supplies, makeup, nail polish ( I have SO MUCH) anything. Are there things I still want? Sure. But I’m waiting to see how long I can hold out.

Not really a "no buy" but I'm trying to read my books and release/donate them. I'm a slow reader, so this has been a challenge for me. Also, I have some major financial goals this year which has caused me to drastically reduce spending in almost every category.

I am so glad to see you again! You've been missed! ♥ I started doing a no buy for Stationary shit, but had to narrow it down so that I can basically tippy toe into my no buy. So this month is no new stickers. I fell down the Fountain pen Rabbit hole and it'll probably be that next month... "You do not need that new ink, Laura!" I have unremembered my payment info on Amazon so it makes me think before I can hit purchase! 🤬
@shanzee412110 ай бұрын
The one thing I can think of to help with the Amazon no-buy. Perhaps if you removed your card information from your profile so that when you go to purchase something, you have to stop and get your card which gives you the time to pause and think "do I really need to make this purchase?".
@suzisaintjames10 ай бұрын
I like the "delete your card from your Amazon wallet". And then I would stick a note on the physical card, saying: "remember Amazon no buy rules." So when I go to pay for my medical supplies with my physical card, I'll see the note and remember to check my cart for hitchhikers! 💖🌞🌵😷

I have 2 no buys for the entire year. Amazon and stationery. Stationery is going good and only 1 Amazon purchase, but that was because I couldn’t get the item elsewhere. So I’m not sure I’m counting that as a lapse as I was going to buy it anyway just the site I was going to get it from it was out of stock (with no restock plans) for that particular design.

I really hope you are doing better! It sounded like a very rough start to the year. I was able to stay off amazon for Jan and have not made any random purchases on there for half a Feb! I am allowed digital books(kindle) and my subscription vitamins but that is it. I am really trying to cut back on my spending this year and curb my dopamine shopping. I have bought so much dumb shit on there it is unreal. Anyway, thank you for the challenge it is making me aware of where my money is going and I am cutting back on my stupid clutter that I really don't need.

Cindy, give yourself a pass for the first 2 weeks of Feb and your no buy thoughts. You had so much happening medically that derailed your routine, and added stress and fear, that it's not surprising that you dropped non-urgent items from your mind. That it has come back to mind shows that thise initial stresses and fears have subsided. Can you find a sticker image that you can associate with this no-buy and add it to your use-it pile? Having something physical to jog your memory may help. Perhaps a sticky note on your daily spread and a note on the homescreen of your phone?
