Ah getting so many books from here, just saw that The Empyrean by Katherine Franklin is for under $4 for the ebook so def getting it so that I can read Bile and Blood after that. Trouble with Lichen also looks very unique, such good finds Rachel!

I picked up The Trouble With Lichen a few weeks back. Haven’t read it yet but is on my eReader, as is the Doctorow novel. I usually don’t have expectations. I hear about a book or read part of the blurb and if I like it, I write it down and/or put it on hold at the library. By the time I get around to downloading it, I’ve likely forgotten what it was about. I just trust that past me knew that future me would like it. This way I go into a book not knowing much about it. It has backfired. I was reading a book two weeks ago that I thought was a detective/thriller/murder mystery book. They kept hinting at some supernatural element but I could see how the possible guilty suspect could fake the supernatural elements to make the victim think they were being haunted and to chase them out. I was certain the detective would pick up on this. Classic plot. Turned out it really was a supernatural event. That was disappointing because until then I thought it was a brilliant plot and was wondering how the detective would unravel the mystery. It felt similar to seeing a movie where you wonder how the characters are going to get out of this mess; you expect some brilliant leaps of insight, cleverness, double-crosses, reveals etc but instead you get a Deus ex machina and presto, that fixed everything. If I’d had read the blurb again I would have realized it wasn’t a detective procedural.

I try to approach books without expectations but obviously some aspect of a book is what draws interest, so sometimes surprises happen. Her Body And Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado surprised me. I knew it was literary, heard some of it was horror, but wow. Implicit brilliance throughout, stories of indirect yet scathing social commentary and heart-wrenching confessional tones. Voracious by Alice Henderson surprised me. Expected a standard pulpy horror novel but got a deep-dive into characters, motivations, and desperate clawing at survival set in brilliantly-described nature.

I really need to try Her Body and Other Parties. I don't read a lot of short stories but I've heard good things

Love John Wyndham. One of my favourite authors. Read Trouble With Lichen in fall (same printing as in your video). Agree he was ahead of his time in the 60s in portraying his female protagonist. One of my favourite novels of Wyndham is Chocky. Wyndham looks at a family whose young son has an imaginary friend, or is it imaginary?

Bummer to hear about Vita Nostra’s main character’s lack of agency. Drives me crazy. Thanks for the video & reviews!

I hate characters without agency
@YukiiReads Жыл бұрын
Hmm I think your take on Vita Nostra is very interesting. Basically when I read it I didn’t perceive the main character as a fully pledged adult, so her lack of agency made sense to me and I didn’t think of her as a ‘woman’ more like a school girl. I think it’s more of a cultural thing, where I’m from undergrad university students are not considered as adults, so they normally think & act like how the students behaved in this book, so I could relate to this story a lot. After listening to your review, now I understand how another reader from a different country could get irritated at how these students behave haha

I added the bile and blood series to my TBR! Thanks for ther recommendation! I was also wondering if you have or would do a bookshelf ranking or something in a vid. Because I see it change a lot in the back of your videos and i'm curious how often you rearrange or if there's like a system to it?

Current slang set in the distant future throws me off as well, just completely ruins any sort of immersion in the world the author tried to set. Similarly when some books just bombard you with nostalgia dumps. We get it you grew up in the 90's stop referencing it multiple times in every chapter (looking at you Bob).

Agreed. And I watched a WW2 historical show on Netflix recently where one of the main characters said-“to be honest”. Irritating there too.
