At the range we had a mixed group of 10 experienced and new shooters. Ran some drills from multiple positions and distances up to 25 yrds, iron sites only, using OWB holsters. P365 Spectre comp, G19, Hellcat pro comp, SW 2.0 compact, and SW shield plus. Very similar results with all pistols and all shooters. The experienced shooters did a lot better standing and squared to the target, but from other positions, on the move, and one handed it was a lot more similar. Experienced shooters did better overall, but all shot well. Our goal was to evaluate the pistols performance for self defense, and usability, not the shooters skill or target shooting. P365 Spectre comp and SW 2.0 compact were scored as favorites to shoot but all scored well. Take away,,, get a quality gun, comp or no comp, get a gun comfortable to carry, get some legit training, practice, and you will be prepared for general self defense shooting.

My two cents. A concealed carry pistol, when using for self defense, is usually at conversational distances, which is what? Maybe five yards? More like less than three yards. You basically only have time to point and shoot. Hopefully with iron sights, you might have just enough time to see very briefly the front sight. Having an optic, is fine, but you will not have the time and distance, to bring that red dot to eye level, making it useless. At longer distances, of course you will be able to use it. Compensators at close distances will make no difference, IMO.

That said, like you, I've seen other people's Sigs break, but I've also seen plenty of Glocks break over the years. The humble markseman pointed out that comped guns are more prone to limp wristing. And you are more likely to limp wrist in a high stress situation. Comped guns came out of competition where fractions of seconds count. That is probably not enough difference to make difference in a DGU. It is a gimmick to get you to buy a new gun.
@cavalieroutdoors603626 күн бұрын
It may not make a difference in a DGU, but it *will* make a difference in your enjoyment of taking the pistol out for range day. For the most part, if something isn't fun - people aren't gonna do it. Shooting a small snappy gun ain't what I call fun. One of the reasons that I shifted back to carrying full size pistols is even knowing all of what I just typed, and knowing I need to train with my small gun(s) - I am not going to do it. On the range I hate the CSX. I hate the Hellcat Pro. I hate the P365 (yea, I said it). But I like the M&Ps, CZ P01, even my 1911. And I don't need a gimmick to buy a new gun. I am a simple creature. If I'm using the restroom, I think about where my wife is on the couch and how I can act to make sure I don't hit her if someone breaks in while I'm answering mother nature's call, among other scenarios. I live in a 2 story rental and my safe is in the garage, so I keep several firearms on the second floor, in case something happens when I'm upstairs. My first off duty carry purchase was a Springfield 1911 V-10. It was a compact 6+1 1911 that was ported. Being a smaller pistol, initially ports sounded like a great idea, to help keep the muzzle down while firing. At the range, it was fine enough to shoot, but I noticed after a range session I felt like I had film all over my face and hands. Eventually, I was able to get on the range by myself, and decided to take the opportunity for some low light practice. Yeah, those ports out two almost vertical flashes on either side of the front sight. Then, I did some more combat oriented shooting, and when shooting from a more retention based position, I was literally sending blast from the ports up toward my face. The next day, I purchased a Sig P220 and carried it until 2014, when I switched to a P229(.357SIG) to get more rounds in the mag, and I had wanted a .357SIG for nearly a decade by then.

As an introduction, I'm a bit of an outlier myself. My current EDC is a Glock 34 with Mag-na-Ported barrel and slide. My previous EDC was a Glock 48 but I was beginning to think it was a bit too small for my hands and I occasionally had a problem dropping magazines. I won the G34 in a GSSF indoor match raffle and was going to use it as my competition gun in GSSF and IDPA. But then I discovered it would fit into the same holster as my G19. I realized that a large number of people who had earned a Turbo Pin from Gabe White, had been using a G34 from concealment. (I am, by the way, quite happy that I earned a Dark Pin from Gabe using the G34). Then, in an effort to maximize the G34s capabilities in IDPA, and after ported barrels were legalized and Carry Optics, I sent it out to Larry Kelly's son at Mag-Na-Port, and in my humble opinion, It was well worth the $185 plus shipping. For example, shooting the IDPA short qualifier, I find my scores higher with the ported barrel then with an unported one. And of course, with the ported barrel and slide I can use all the same holsters that I already had.

The Hellcats are interesting little pistols. Having double stack mags and being about as thin as some of the older pistols which use single stack mags. I sometimes think about retiring my old pistol and purchasing a new one. Though in all probability the one I have will likely be sufficient. A consideration about compensated pistols is what may happen if you must use them in close quarters. If an attacker is extremely close, you might want to avoid extending your arm out at them fully and offering them a better opportunity to disarm you. Yet if you fire from the hip, the ports would possibly be blasting hot gasses and powder towards your face and eyes.

@user-zv2eu1vj4l25 күн бұрын
Not complaining here. I just find it comical to see all those attachments on a sidearm that has resulted in a “steampunk” image. Because of its small size, a handgun is meant to be discreetly WORN when outside the confinements of the shooting range. I’m ok with all the “bells and whistles” on what has been aptly described as a “range toy:” a flamboyant expression of affluent means applied to a once-stolid piece of hardware designed for personal protection against the miscreant segment of the population. It’s a free market and innovation MUST flourish! Practicality, sensibility, and logic must also exist to support the prime objective of a handgun: self defence. For it to BE useful, it must BE with the owner as much as possible and it must be convenient to wear or carry it. Having all those attachments makes it quite prohibitive to do so. There appears to be a trend that focus on handgun products on opposing ends of the purpose continuum. On one end is the large-frame, “tricked-out” custom high-capacity “wüundernine” for sport, amusement, and braggadocio. I highly suspect that this may invariably BE rooted in the timeless adage of “oneupsmanship.” So be it. At the opposite end is an equally vivid trend towards the “carry piece,” a CCW practice once represented by the derringer, .25 & .32 caliber “belly guns” of yore and folklore. What I find disturbing is that while training is often with the larger sidearm, it is somewhat avoided with the smaller, frequently carried handgun since the recoil is much more unpleasant. Someone here WILL LIKELY respond with an assertion that they train with that diminutive pocket gun they carry. Good for you but have you spent enough time researching the most effective ammunition FOR defending yourself with that short-barrel handgun?

I have several hand guns and I bought the Hellcat whenever it first came out and I will say that it is a little bit Snappy to shoot. I bought the P365 X Macro after that and put a Holosun Green Dot on it and that's what I Conceal Carry nowadays. I've shot several other newer comped guns that definitely shoot softer than my X Macro... But not enough to justify my upgrading to one of them unless I was just wanting to Add another pistol to the collection... which I usually add one a year to it just because you can Never have too many Pew Pews!

Here in Minnesota, wearing multiple layers of clothing is a way of life in the winter. Multiple layers of clothing adversely affect bullet expansion. A higher muzzle velocity helps overcome expansion issues through multiple layers of clothing. So I'll take the longer uncompensated barrel producing a higher muzzle velocity. For practical concealed carry I also prefer iron sights. I presently carry either a Sig P365 or a P365XL depending upon my clothing requirements of the day. I plan to buy a P365 Fuse with its longer slide and 4.3" barrel this month. Hopefully I can manage the extra length of the barrel and slide and still be able to conceal carry it. I've already cut down an XMacro grip module to handle a MagGuts modified 14 rd magazine. We will see how well it works for concealed carrying. At worst, the longer barrel and slide will still work well for open carry while camping.

Carry whatever you want. For me, all the new gizmos and gadgets get in the way and hinder me from every day all day carrying. Smaller, thinner, and more comfortable means I will be more likely to have it when I need it verses a "better" one I won't have because of fit or comfort.

I think carrying a comped firearm is ok, but I wouldn't recommend it, especially if it's a 22LR. I hope to god that these gun companies do not ever put out an edc pistol with a ported 22LR, because those rounds are filthy. I just recently purchased a Taurus TX22C Compact 22LR, for going to the range on the cheap. It's 5 cents per round, so you can shoot all day long, and have a good little time with it. Or, go plinking if you live far enough away from town, which I'm not unfortunately. So, on my first day going to the range with my new Taurus TX22 Compact, I just had to test out some of my 5.56 and 9mm compensators. Man, it only took one stupid shot and I had a face full of gunpowder. I could taste it, it got in my eyes, it was a total mess. lol. Yes, I was wearing my protective glasses but not even that was enough to protect me from the elements. If the wind wants to blow a gust a certain way, well you better be careful. It was a cloudy of gun powder that I've never seen happen with any of my other comped guns. I was ok, I just took that comp off immediately, and said I'm never shooting this gun comped ever again. After that one shot from a comped 22LR, that was when I finally understood what people meant when they said how dirty a 22LR caliber round are. 22LR's are a ton of fun, but are nasty rounds. They are dirty as hell! There really is no need to use a compensator on a 22LR pistol, since there is little to no recoil. Anyways, that being said, I've never been much of a fan of compensators. When you fire a gun you want the ejection of all the lead and gunk to travel away from you. Don't have it thrown up in the air to help with recoil. If you shoot a lot, you better get some lead wipes and learn the proper ways of protecting yourself after you leave the gun range. You DO NOT want to get lead poisoning that can happen very easy. Once you are done shooting, you must wash your hand before touching anything. Or else, you spread lead from your hands to your cars door, the belt buckle, the steering wheel, then your homes door knobs, and it will spread in ways most never even think about. It doesn't matter what caliber round you are using, it is still possible to get a face full of gunpowder if ported. So, if the wind decides to blow on the one day you really need that gun, you better hope to god the the wind doesn't blow your way. It is not worth a cloud of smoke getting in your eyes. Gunpowder goes everywhere, but much less so with an un-ported or non-comped pistol. What's the moral of this story? Be careful with your guns, and be careful about lead exposure. You do not want to get sick. So, I highly suggest not using a compensator, unless its not windy out. Or, you are in a very ventilated indoor range, which lets be honest, most ranges aren't very well ventilated, which means you should limit your time when it comes to indoor ranges to lessen the exposure of lead. While 22LR's are fun and compensators are fun, I personally would not recommend due to significantly higher exposures to lead. Keep that powder flowing forward, Not up in the air. Great video Hegshot87, - Cheers!

I don't think the carry guns themselves have gone too far, it's the people who own them that have gone too far with what they do to their guns. I will use Glock as an example, people trick out their Glocks like they are tricking out their trucks. They change the slide, recoil spring, triggers, barrels and the list goes on and on. I have a Glock 19 Gen 5 and have had it for about a year and it looks exactly the same as the day I bought it because the gun works and works every time. As an EDC I am not going to compromise the integrity and reliability of an already working firearm but apparently 99.9% of gun owners out there didn't get the memo on this. Typical personal self defense shooting: 3 shots (or less) at 3 yards (or less. Some say 3 feet or less) in 3 seconds (or less). My primary EDC _personal defense_ handgun does not have a red dot sight, 'ports', laser or flashlight. The trigger pull is extra heavy (DAO hammer fired) and has regular fixed sights. There is no manual safety (other than a long heavy trigger pull) and no 'hammer drop', because the hammer is always down. It works exactly like a DA revolver. Pull the trigger when you want to fire. Don't pull the trigger if you don't want to fire. It is not a target gun, range gun or competition gun. It is a _personal self defense_ gun. I have many other guns for range, competition or target shooting. It is 100% reliable with my _personal self defense_ ammo (Federal HST 150 gr. 'micro') and my 122 gr. cast lead RN practice handloads. My primary EDC is a S&W Model 3914 DAO 8+1 capacity I have had for 30 years. It is exactly the way it came out of the box. I haven't found anything to make me change since. Given all the choices we have today, if I were buying a new handgun today for EDC, I would seek out a _used_ S&W Model 3914 DAO 8+1 capacity.

I shoot a lot in the dark in Alaska and have never had a problem with the minimal amount of upwards flash. The normal flash from the end of the barrel. The only options I've added to this gun were adjustable tritium nite sights and the Hyve quality mag extension that gives me one more round than the factory +1 magazine.

Never liked compensated pistols. Bought one once just to see if I really didn't like them. I didn't, sold it. I don't like the debris they put in the air or the potential of muzzle flash that "may" inhibit my shooting or that "may" mark my position clearly. I do like manufacturers competing for sales and in doing so making innovations that may be useful to someone and perhaps charging less money for quality firearms. If a pistol fits my hand in a way I like, isn't too picky about what I feed it within reason, balances in my hand, is accurate for me, carries a decent amount of ammo, works dang near 100 percent of the time, I carry it. Everything I carry has an orange tritium front sight or a dot, talon grips and most often an after market trigger. I prefer the same sort of "feel" in whatever I put in my hand. What I put in my hand on a particular day depends on the weather, what I'm wearing and my mood. I think saying anything has gone "too far" or is "not worth it" is like saying a "gun guy" finally has enough guns. It's an individual preference. Thankfully we live in a Republic where we have individual choices.

I would say that it is far more important to pick one gun and get good with it. I've never understood the logic of a 'carry rotation' and constantly buying new guns. It seems unserious. If I ever have to use my gun to save my life, I don't want to waste a split second while my brain adjusts to whichever pistol I happen to be carrying that day. People need to stop buying new guns and upgrades, and concentrate on the fundamentals.
@cayman987324 күн бұрын
I think an acceptable carry rotation is based on weight of gun, and size. In the winter months I carry a s&w 1911 4 inch in scandium in 45 acp. I carry a 3 inch aluminum 1911 in 45acp in summer when it's hot out. A I shoot each often B. They have the exact same shape, controls, caliber . My clothes get smaller in summer, but the last ten years I went to purse carry in a holster.
@bradhertzler445124 күн бұрын
That's your opinion and while you are entitled to it, that doesn't make it right. What's right for you may not be right for others. If you dry fire your pistol before you carry out your day, in a few seconds to a few minutes, depending how many reps you do, you can be familiar with whichever firearm you are carrying for the day. This one step alone makes a carry rotation very doable, for those willing to take that one extra step. But to each their own. You do you and if others choose to have a rotation, good on them.
@thepenultimateninja579723 күн бұрын
@cayman9873 I agree. I actually have a similar system; i have various sizes of Glock pistol. It's basically like a magic gun that can change size depending on what I'm wearing. That's not what is generally meant by a carry rotation though. A rotation means they are swapping it out not due to practical necessity, but because they enjoy carrying a variety of different guns.
@thepenultimateninja579723 күн бұрын
@bradhertzler4451 It depends on what your reason is. For example, if you carry a smaller gun when it's hot out, that's not what I would consider a rotation. I'm talking about people who have a variety of similar handguns, and rotate what they carry because they enjoy the variety. If you're doing that, then you're placing yourself at an unnecessary disadvantage.

It seems like a good idea, but I'm not going to go out and buy one , I've considered adding a comp to my G-19 but haven't, could be just another problem waiting to happen that I don't need as an add on . As a built in, seems like a velocity killer, losing an inch of the barrel especially on an already short barrel. On the 365 or even the 43x with a 3.2" barrel loosing an inch would be turning it into a 2" snub nose , what's the point , just squeeze your little finger tighter . I saw a 1911 type with five holes on top of the barrel, it looked like a top fuel dragster so much flame completely lost sight of the target and the dot sight was covered in unburnt black powder 😂. I'm thinking the whole idea is more suited for minimum length barrel of 4" and up, so the powder is burned off more and less velocity loss and more distance from the dot sight, now it's starting to make more sense. The longer the barrel the more the flip this is where you need it . Shorter barrels with quicker exit tend to flip off target less with faster follow up shots, less needed . This is the conclusion of my research in theory 😂. Carry on ! ❤

At the range I love pistol comps and ported barrels for messing around. The only comp that I feel is worth it is the Radian Ramjet Afterburner with that 44% reduction in muzzle flip.

Still on my Glock 42 with TLR6 pocket carry. I've owned the first hellcat and fount it to be way too snappy. Had a sig p365, meh. If I do carry 9mm IWB my go to is a Canik MC9. They have the best out of the box trigger ever.

Sig: We’ve been in business since the mid seventies and have sold millions of firearms worldwide. But we keep forgetting to check with those yahoos on KZbin before we bring a new product to market. Never mind the market research and analysis, the focus groups and our long term business model. Get Bubba in here once he’s sober and ask him what we should be doing next. Just make sure someone brushes the crumbs out of his beard in case we need him to make a presentation before the board of directors.

My 43x is comped and with my small hands (not great grip strength) it’s a lot easier to stay on target for multiple shots. It’s more pleasant to shoot than my other non comped 43x.

Comped guns are a disadvantage is close quarters shooting, such as pectoral index, can injured, so be careful when training.

Personally I'm picking up a comp for one of my carries. Idea being currently my grip strength isn't as good as id like it to be. I prefer training for function, so I don't use traditional grip strength training. I prefer instead to use function to promote growth in that function. So eventually using my gun my grip strength will adapt on its own. In the meantime the compensation helps keep the gun from flying out of my hands in the interim while I grow into the recoil. The added felt recoil even actually helps towards that. As well, eventually I'll get used to the extra support to have better accuracy. So once I start getting comfortable, I can take it back off. At which point I'll have an expectation for how well I can place my shots, and how I'm no longer at that mark, which will be a fun challenge. As is my shots are more accurate than I would expect given my training level, though I'm definitely no sharp shooter. It's sort of like how giving spider man the tech suit from stark face him more options, and when it was taken away he became more clever with how he used his existing ability. Not to mention Im getting into learning my guns. Just did a complete breakdown of my tavor for reassembly, and Ive at least started full disassembly of my canik's slide (though I'm waiting on some tools before I start taking apart the lower frame.) So ultimately it's just me learning my guns, how well I can handle them in different configurations, and understanding gun smithing overall, if even just from the customization standpoint. At this point the only modification not available for my main carry is actually the sights. The u-dot tritium setup is actually perfect for my eyes, most other sight combinations make it hard to feel comfortable with my sight picture for various reasons. A red tritium night sight and a red u-dot rear sight would be perfect for the elite SC (for me). Unfortunately there isn't a single after market option without instead going to multiple manufacturers and hoping for the right fit, which means a lot of trial error and cost, none of which I feel like doing. Even canik's factory blacked out warren rear and red tritium front isn't good, because it doesn't have that U line to hover the dot over. In all fairness the sights on the hellcat pro are basically perfect for me. But my canik was basically made for me, with the exception of the sights. So now I'm just looking for a way to marry one to the other

if i were to carry a pocket pistol, like a P365, i'd like to have it ported by default, like the L5 50AE sure, less muzzle velocity, but the idea is to use it point blank and less recoil means faster shooting anything shorter than 4" should be ported, especially when on a pocket frame
