In this episode, my guest and I share our real-life experience with heat pump installation and operation in both warm and cold climates.
Our guest for this episode is Howard Bynder, Owner of The Bee HVAC in Golden, Colorado, and host of The HVAC Dope Show.
Heat pumps have been in use for decades now. But why all the fuss lately around heat pump applications?
Two words: Electrification and Decarbonization.
Electrification involves substituting traditional energy sources with electricity to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and mitigate environmental impact. It is evident in the growing adoption of electric vehicles, electric heating, and electrified public transportation.
Simultaneously, decarbonization minimizes carbon dioxide emissions by transitioning to low-carbon alternatives and implementing sustainable practices. This movement includes a shift to renewable energy sources like solar and wind and efforts to enhance energy efficiency and promote eco-friendly practices in various sectors.
Heat pumps are energy-efficient HVAC units that move BTUs from one air or water source to another.

They work on the principle of moving heat from a lower-temperature space to a higher-temperature space, using a small amount of energy to accomplish this transfer.
There are two main types of heat pumps:
Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP): These extract heat from the outside air and transfer it indoors for heating purposes. In warmer weather, the process can be reversed to cool indoor spaces by removing heat and releasing it outside. ASHPs are commonly used for residential and commercial heating and cooling applications.
Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP) or Geothermal Heat Pumps: These extract heat from the ground, maintaining a more stable temperature than the air. GSHPs use a series of pipes buried in the ground to exchange heat. They are efficient for heating and cooling, with the added benefit of higher efficiency due to the stable ground temperature.
Heat pumps are considered more energy-efficient than traditional heating or cooling systems because they move heat rather than generate it. They are environmentally friendly, as they can be powered by electricity from renewable sources. Heat pumps are increasingly popular for residential, commercial, and industrial applications as part of efforts to reduce energy consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Heat pumps have historically been very popular in the Southeast and other mild winter climates but heat pumps do still perform well in cold climates.
Here are a few specifics about cold climate heat pumps.
Efficiency Reduction: As the outdoor temperature decreases, the efficiency of air-source heat pumps tends to decline. This is because less heat energy is available in colder air to extract and transfer indoors.
Supplemental Heating: In very cold climates, some ASHP systems are equipped with supplemental heating elements (such as electric resistance heating) to provide additional warmth when needed.
In regions with extremely cold temperatures, it's essential to consider the specific requirements and features of the heat pump system. Some advanced heat pump models are designed to operate efficiently in colder conditions, incorporating technologies like variable-speed compressors and improved defrost cycles to enhance performance.
Overall, advancements in heat pump technology continue to address the challenges of cold climates, making them viable and energy-efficient heating solutions even in regions with harsh winter conditions. Regular maintenance and proper sizing of the heat pump system are crucial to ensure optimal performance, regardless of the climate.

Wonderful topic! Keep spreading the gospel of high efficiency heat pumps! They also provide a much more comfortable supply air temperature on a cool day, compared to the blast of heat from a single stage furnace! That’s what I love most about inverter heat pumps here in TX.
