Thank you SOOOOOOO much for taking the time to explain these different radio's, frequencies and all the other info that's attached to them. I'm an old timer that was really into CB's and met a lot of great people by being involved in that. In fact I still have two linears that I use to use on my CB's. One is a 100 watt and the other one is a 250 watt. Illegal of course but when no-one would give you a break, you flipped a switch and TOOK one! But all these different radios and frequencies nowadays, for an old time like me, it's downright confusing. That's why I say thank you for taking the time to explain all this stuff. I love to off road and have a CB with SSB in my '47 CJ2A Willy's. Kinda lets you know where I'm coming from. I'm, 74 years young and still enjoying wheeling and life in general. I wish you all the very best. You are really appreciated!!!

Stumbled across your channel doing research for GMRS. Informative, amusing, and well done. Dumped a bunch of money into CB's in the early 00's, went into truck and dumped less, now we're looking for something for family trips and think GMRS might fit the bill for range and simplicity to utilize range. Likely to outfit several vehicles and a few boats. Thank you for taking the time to put this information out there. You are correct, CB is dying, most truckers that have them now only use them for shippers and receivers coms, and the occasional bear or parking lot reports. Lot lizards (last I knew) use them for advertising before splashing themselves off in with a 1/2 diesel 1/2 rainwater puddle on their way to the next client...

I discovered your channel about a week ago and I am(at 70 years old) going to get a ham radio license. When I was young I had an ol Packard-Bell sw radio that was about 2 ft square. At night I picked up stations in Europe and even Australia. With the shape of the world right now it is extremely important to communicate if the shtf.

I'm a ham but realize it's not for everyone. Best way to sum it up is the farther you can transmit, the more people you might affect should you transmit incorrectly (wrong band, wrong frequency or whatever). FRS is so a lot of small (1km) group of people can talk to each other. GMRS widens that circle by allowing a bit more tx power but you might interfer with nearby groups. With HAMs, you have much more power available with better antennas, where you can communicate father still.

Thanks man... you have been very informative and fun to watch... I just bought a BF RV-5R radio and have been watching your beginner videos... this one was really great because I knew nothing about any of the radio services. I wanted to have a radio that I could pick up emergency services or NOAA for emergencies at home. I lost power last spring at the house and it made me feel very vulnerable, no power, no nothing for 26 hours... our cell phones worked after the storm, but we had to go to the car to charge them. So, I have been preparing for when the next disaster hits and I can hear what's going on. I got a little generator so we can stay powered and the radio will help in case no cell phones or FM or TV is broadcast... god help us all if it ever gets to the point. But, I wanted to give you a thumbs up for your funny informative channel... I hope to program my BF UV-5R to at least get the channels to keep us safe... Call sign Airdromer is my dads call sign from when he was a Navel Aviator in WWII.. so I'd like to get to that level of radio use where I can earn that call sign... J O'L

FRS: A high school campus, or an outdoor mall. GMRS (portable): 2 miles simplex in a neighborhood with trees and 2-story houses. MURS: only if you own all the radios on your campus/business and don't want to talk to anyone else. GMRS (HT/mobile): best all-around if you have repeaters available, or if you have 25-50 watts simplex in a small-sized city. HAM: most capable and versatile but you can only talk to other hams, so GMRS it is.

Very good summary. I had a CB in the early 2000s. Truckers were still pretty active on it back then, but you're right, it has definitely died off now. I have an old one with a mag mount antenna that I plug in occasionally to hear what's going on. All I hear (on CH 19 mostly) is weirdos with high power amplifiers rambling about nothing, the occasional trucker bitching about it. Sounds like a mental hospital. I recently decided to go all-in on GMRS and got a license and a 50W mobile. We have quite a few repeaters here in PA and weekly nets. I want to get a HAM license eventually, but I know that's a slippery slope with all the equipment needed to get on the various bands. Plus, some local guys have said that HAM is almost as quiet as GMRS around here lately. But as you said, not much to talk about if the shit isn't hitting the fan.

One thing I'm still not clear on, can you use MURS frequencies on a ham handheld like say the bf-f8hp pro if you set the power mode to low which is only 1W output? And by can you use it, i mean does it hurt the FCCs feelings if you do that or just the sad hams?
@indridcold8433

49Mhz, is the forgotten band. Once teaming with activity on both analogue and digital modes, 49Mhz is now a desert band with the occasional room monitor heard. Gone are the walkie talkies, hands free headphones, cordless phones, garage door monitors, construction crew radios, radio controlled toys, and short range video transmitters. Perhaps that band will be repurposed along side 6 meters. 47Mhz to 54Mhz needs to be reassigned to other services that would use those frequencies.

Ok, so FRS shares the same freqs with GMRS. How can one (a radio Karen or the FCC) tell if you are doing GMRS (and have to use a call sign, etc) or FRS (where you have to use a non-detachable antenna)? Does this just work on the honor system? Who's to know if I use my UV-5R as an FRS or GMRS unless some radio Karen sees me using a UV-5R, tells the Feds, and gets me placed on a terror watchlist?
