They say that every day is a gift, but in reality, the only days that are truly gifts are the ones where Randy drops a nutty video across our collective chests and smears some knowledge directly into our hearts. Bless you, good sir. And thank you!

Thank you SOOOOOOO much for taking the time to explain these different radio's, frequencies and all the other info that's attached to them. I'm an old timer that was really into CB's and met a lot of great people by being involved in that. In fact I still have two linears that I use to use on my CB's. One is a 100 watt and the other one is a 250 watt. Illegal of course but when no-one would give you a break, you flipped a switch and TOOK one! But all these different radios and frequencies nowadays, for an old time like me, it's downright confusing. That's why I say thank you for taking the time to explain all this stuff. I love to off road and have a CB with SSB in my '47 CJ2A Willy's. Kinda lets you know where I'm coming from. I'm, 74 years young and still enjoying wheeling and life in general. I wish you all the very best. You are really appreciated!!!

Stumbled across your channel doing research for GMRS. Informative, amusing, and well done. Dumped a bunch of money into CB's in the early 00's, went into truck and dumped less, now we're looking for something for family trips and think GMRS might fit the bill for range and simplicity to utilize range. Likely to outfit several vehicles and a few boats. Thank you for taking the time to put this information out there. You are correct, CB is dying, most truckers that have them now only use them for shippers and receivers coms, and the occasional bear or parking lot reports. Lot lizards (last I knew) use them for advertising before splashing themselves off in with a 1/2 diesel 1/2 rainwater puddle on their way to the next client...

Great summary. I got a ham license, but then also got a gmrs license, because the value of having two-way comms is being able to talk to someone, and sometimes that someone might only be on GMRS.

FRS: A high school campus, or an outdoor mall. GMRS (portable): 2 miles simplex in a neighborhood with trees and 2-story houses. MURS: only if you own all the radios on your campus/business and don't want to talk to anyone else. GMRS (HT/mobile): best all-around if you have repeaters available, or if you have 25-50 watts simplex in a small-sized city. HAM: most capable and versatile but you can only talk to other hams, so GMRS it is.

QUESTION for anyone that can answer Is there a MOBILE RADIO or HOME BASE STATION (similar to the Baofeng UV-5R) legally available for sale, that will allow me to talk (or manually program to talk) on FRS/ MURS/CB, but only listen to HAM and GMRS, without the need for a license, or buying several different types of radios, which seems like idiotic bureaucracy The proverbial "one radio to rule them all" Or is Baofeng handheld the only radio that does that?

49Mhz, is the forgotten band. Once teaming with activity on both analogue and digital modes, 49Mhz is now a desert band with the occasional room monitor heard. Gone are the walkie talkies, hands free headphones, cordless phones, garage door monitors, construction crew radios, radio controlled toys, and short range video transmitters. Perhaps that band will be repurposed along side 6 meters. 47Mhz to 54Mhz needs to be reassigned to other services that would use those frequencies.

I'm a ham but realize it's not for everyone. Best way to sum it up is the farther you can transmit, the more people you might affect should you transmit incorrectly (wrong band, wrong frequency or whatever). FRS is so a lot of small (1km) group of people can talk to each other. GMRS widens that circle by allowing a bit more tx power but you might interfer with nearby groups. With HAMs, you have much more power available with better antennas, where you can communicate father still.

I broke my left forearm and 3 fingers on my right hand slamming out this response to your video. I'm consulting an internet attorney to see if I can hold you responsible for that. My agency serves a beach community and we have also taken on the responsibility of water rescues. We won't go more than about 2 miles out , and only in conditions safe enough for a 12 foot inflatable boat. I'm hearing impaired and even with my aids (which I won't wear in the boat or diving out to rescue some shmuck who got themselves into a jam) I have great difficulty hearing the marine radio. It sounds like AM radio on crack, if that was a thing. Does GMRS on a repeater have good sound quality? I'm asking you here instead of googling it myself because you've obviously promulgated yourself in here as some kind of divine all-knowing authority on the subject of radios.
