I honestly can’t stand Tristan. These are things that I noticed while watching the show but I never see anyone talk about it so it seemed like no body else felt the same way about it. Tristan is so selfish and whine-y. Literally all he ever does is complain and blame other people (specifically maya and miles) also Tristan seems so insensitive to what maya went through with cam. When maya told Simpson about me Yates, Tristan said something along the lines of “why do you always get to have these epic romances when I can’t find love” which to me was a rude and selfish thing to say because her “epic romance” ended in her boyfriend killing himself which was very traumatic for maya, and Tristan was acting like Maya’s life is so perfect because guys are attracted to her and his life sucks because guys aren’t attracted to him, which is very ignorant.

So glad someone has finally said what I always thought. There are so many negative comments about Maya from people who seem to take Tristan's side, which never made sense to me. I always saw her as trying to help people, sometimes in effectively or not in the best way, but her heart was always in the right place. But Tristan always only cared about himself (perhaps with the exception of Miles, who he let treat Tristan like dirt), which infuriated me. I feel bad for thinking it but I was glad that Tristan was in a coma in next class season 3 because it meant that we got a bit of a break from his character. Although his character did seem to improve in season 4.

+ssSilverMuseee Next Class Tristan was way better. Hell, season 12 Tristan was fine. But seasons 13 and 14... he's almost worse than Zoe because he gets away with it. I don't think people understand how much Maya's anxiety dictates much of her actions and how fearful she is of having another Cam in her life. Anytime it seems like someone is starting down the same path of self destruction, she feels thay she needs to pull them back. And just like you said, she always has the best of intentions, but not the best execution.

I hated that scene with Tristan making Maya forgive Zoe and how he made Maya feel like the bad guy in the situation. He was such hypocrite because I remember back in season 12 when Tori found out Maya kissed Zig, Tori and Tristan quickly gave her the cold shoulder. Tristan didn't make them become friends again. When Cam died, it was Tori the one to see how Maya was doing, never watch Tristan came to see how Maya was doing. Tori decides to put the past behind them bc she realizes there more important thing than a stupid boy and of course Tristan did too.

They haven't been speaking for A WHILE after the incident, and even after he forgave her we never really see them hang out like they used to. Their friendship kinda sizzled out, which I thought was cool.

I think the root cause for the way Tristan would act towards his friends, and his attitude in general was something that was looked at on the outside, but never really shown in depth on the show. When we find out that Owen is his brother, we see a little bit about their relationship. Owen doesn’t like the way Tristan appears to other people, and really tries to shield him from a lot of things. While Owen tried to protect Tristan, and look out for his best interests when it came to other people harassing him, Owen often made things worse before he made them better. We get a glimpse of this when Owen doesn’t want to be seen around school with Tristan, but comes to his rescue the opening night of the play. This dynamic, I think leaves Tristan confused about a person’s true intentions, and gives him a cynical view on things. Of the friends that made it to Next Class, Tristan is the one that we never see or hear about his home life. The glimpses we get in the relationship between him and Owen do tell more about why he acts a certain way.

@Lexi 93 Maya didn't string him along. Yes she liked him when they met, but then he got back together with Tori, and Maya moved on. She dated Cam, and Zig wanted her to break up with him. He bullied Cam for dating Maya. He kissed Maya while he was Tori, and overall treated her poorly while they were dating. When Cam took his own life, Maya was distraught, and not in the right state of mind. They have a moment, and Zig takes it as a sign that she now wants to date him, despite Maya never encourging him. She then moves on and date Miles, and Zig throws a hissy fit because Maya chose to date someone she liked. He then began to harras her and Miles. He decides to get drunk in the green house where Cam took his own life, and tried to pick a fight with Miles, all because Maya dared to date someone who wasn't him. Then when he finally gets a shot with Maya he treats her terribly. He gets jealous of Jonah, and instead of trusting Maya he cheats on her, and blames her for it. Only coming clean after Hunter has threatned her several times. Lies to her about the cheating. Maya was nice to Zig, and he took it the wrong. She never promised him that they would date. Zig is a self proclaimed 'nice guy'. He feels entitled to Maya.

I've been re-watching and this is something that I've noticed. Maybe I didn't see this when I first watched Degrassi because it was a couple of years ago and I hadn't gone through a friendship like this. The way that Tristan blames Maya for everything reminds me of a friendship that I delt with last year. It sucks, but now we're at a place where things are ok.

I love Tristan now, but he was terrible to Maya early on, I definitely see that. I think it was born from a place of 1. just needing to grow up and 2. really really deep insecurities. It definitely doesn't excuse his actions, but everything Tristan did to Maya came from his own insecurities. In season 11 or 12 (can't remember which, they blend together a little), he had a storyline where he was edging on an eating disorder and it's brought up all the time how he's insecure about his looks. He loses weight and grows into a really attractive guy, but I think in his head, he's still that chubby kid who is WAY too concerned with romantic relationships and is afraid no one will ever want to be with him because he still sees himself as ugly/fat. So he takes everything out on Maya because she's this beautiful blonde girl who always has guys falling for her, including two he's had crushes on (Cam and Miles). I think he grows out of it because he finally starts seeing a little more worth in himself and gaining more confidence. This may have been a mess, I just have a lot of feelings about Tristan.

Tristan does the most and NEVER faces repercussions for it. He always took Tori's side even when she was wrong and HE KNEW she was wrong when it came to Maya and Zig. Then when Tori moved away, Tristan tried to buddy up with Maya only to IMMEDIATELY drop her for Zoe because she was every shallow teen fantasy star trope he idolized. Maya spent all summer faking being his gf for him and avoiding Miles only for Miles to still be interested in her. When she tries to protect and stand up for Tristan TO Miles and Zoey (though fails) he doesn't appreciate what she did and blames her for making it worse. Then she goes out of her way to find and apologize to HIM anyway only for him to still ditch Maya for Zoe when the school year starts, refusing to EVER stand up for Maya despite Zoe cyberbullying Maya and almost getting her assaulted as a result. Then later when Tristan is being exploited by the teacher and she TRIES to keep his secret, eventually telling Simpson (as she should) he completely demonizes her. Tristan was NEVER there for anything Maya went through but she was always there for him, she was the friend he needed and honestly? He never deserved her.

I recognized everything else that happened, but the thing that bothered me is the fact that Tristan is literally looking down as Zoe stepped on Maya's foot, yet he acts like he didn't see it and only sees Maya spill her drink.

In his defense, Tristan did end up apologizing and explaining his actions in the first scenario, about ditching Maya for Zoe. But nonetheless, it wasn't right of him. It seemed a bit out of character, considering how loyal of a friend he was to Tori. I'm not sure why the writers wrote him thay way, but I'll just assume that he needed to grow up. He did get significantly better in Next Class, especially how he handled the Hunter situation. I mean, he still had some of his moments, but maybe that's just his character trait. By the end of NC Season 4, you can tell the accident changed both him and Maya, and it was refreshing to see them kind if create a new kind of friendship. Loved your reasoning in the video :)

Zig does to, blaming her because he couldn't keep his dick to himself when he hooked up with Zoe, not taking no for an answer when she told him she wasn't interested in him. It certainly hits home because I had an abusive "friend" like Tristan(except it was a female), only It was more like the earlier friendship(season 7-mid-season 8-ish) between Holy J. and Anya. You guys remember how Holly J. would say or do hurtful things to Anya and then act as though she was actually trying to help her? That was my so-called friend. One time, we om our way from visiting my grandma in the hospital and saw my cousin's bf(he was always extremely rude to me for no reason) and she pretty much demanded that I go over to say "hello" to this asshole because it's rude not to(how ironic). I told her that he's rude to me so I'll pass and she just would NOT let it go. She made such a big deal out of it I ended up just going over and made a complete idiot of myself. Tristan has always showed a lot of hate towards women he finds to be a threat to his love life. Mia being one of them. He has a lost of insecurities about feeling like he will never truly be loved and decides to blame it on the women he feels are ruining that for him instead of realizing the problem lies in him and his relationship, not with them.

I'm not sure that's the case,especially because it was only Maya he had this issue with. Really, I think how he treats Maya and other in his life is based on being envious. Not necessarily blaming them for him not having love, but more lamenting what he seemingly can't have. Taking out his frustration on others for seemingly having it all while he is lonely. He only seemed to feel that someone was actively hurting his chances for love when Maya reported Yates.

Tristan had always been one of my least favorite characters. Even before season 13 in season 12 he was toxic too. He got mad at Tori for wanting to spend time with her Zig (her boyfriend at the time) and when she tried to include Tristan he acted petty and even tried to break them up by telling her Zig called her fat. He was always a shitty friend.

Don't get me wrong i HATE tristan. and i completely agree that he is an abusive friend. but him blaming maya for telling simpson about mr yates made alot of sense to me. of course it was mr yates in the wrong and maya was only trying to protect her friend. but mr yates gr00med and sa'd tristan. and he did not have a chance to realise what happened to him before maya told simpson. he fully believed mr yates liked him and that he wasn't being preyed on. predators are extremely manipulative and trick you into thinking the abuse is normal (I'm speaking from experience). Tristan clearly didn’t see anything wrong with the situation, so he felt like maya was threatening a real relationship. of course this doesn't make how he treated maya after this okay. but I think its important to keep the context of tristan having just been abused and believing this was normal in mind.

Umm....that didn't happen at all. I don't know what show you watched, but both Maya and Tristan assumed Miles was straight when he didn't respond enthusiastically to Tristan in Paris. Tristan especially was surprised when sparks flew between them during the storm. Also, Maya spent basically all season 13 trying to make her and Miles work.

I started to reeeeally hate Tristan, there was no redemption for his character. He blamed Maya for all his problems, he was completely biphobic towards Miles and so dismissive of his sexuality, like when he told Zoe "he's firmly on boys now" and then Miles still went and hooked up with Lola.
