I am half way through an interpretation course and I was sweating beads when we were told about note taking, how necessary it is, and how hard it can be to master. I googled search terms in spanish about interpreting symbols in spanish and your channel appeared. Subscribed!

Hi Maxwell! I'm glad you stumbled upon and now we have you here! Congratulations on the course you are taking! That's great! Note-taking is something very personal and particular. Every interpreter takes notes differently but what I can tell you is that for me, notes are essential and I cannot interpret consecutively without them. It can be a bit challenging to master but not impossible. It just takes a good method that works for you, and then consistency and practice.

Hello!. I just wanted to say this is amazing!. Without taking notes I'd say my accuracy % was around 60-65% ( being generous) I had a bunch of omissions and some backward phrasing.. meanwhile, with note taking, it went much much smoother than that. Hi Rosa, I really enjoyed watching your video. I noticed that I did a lot better the second time around after being able to take notes. I don't have a great memory, so note-taking helped me retain 80% of the information. I think I omitted a couple of things or details. Thank you for the tips. Do you use pictures and symbols or do you think writing the begging or part of the word helps? If you use the symbols, how did you learn them? Did you make them up?
@Interprepedia
@Interprepedia 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Isabel! Thank you for sharing your experience with this practice! I mostly take notes by typing abbreviations and codes on my computer since I primarily interpret remotely, LOL. Taking notes by hand is hard for me. Still, sometimes there is no other option (like in a test, for example). I learned some symbols from this course, and I came up with other symbols of my own along the way or borrowed them from other colleagues. Other times I just write abbreviations of certain words; it's a combination of things. I would say the main thing is doing whatever is more intuitive for you because this is one of those things that is different for everyone.

Thank you so much for this. After taking notes, I missed the ¨I called my mom while...¨ part (I get the idea but it wasn't the same sentence haha) and ¨it was a little chilly outside¨. When I started, I struggled a lot at first because I got distracted and I lost focus but, after getting rid of distractions I listened the exercise again and I did a better record and after taking notes I did even better. It's very important to be focused and keep practicing to do our best. Great video

For me, the story was easier to follow without note-taking. I would just imagine every action as it was described, and my memory retention was better. When I started taking notes, it was hard to keep up, and I retained very little from the story because I was more focused on taking the notes.

The first time I missed most of the things, I really struggled. But with note taking I was able to get almost all of it. I did'n get the "today" was my day off, I said yesterday. And then I didn't get the "around" 9 am, I said "until 9 am". I said "sweatshirt" instead of hoodie, and lastly I didn't get the "a little chilly" part, I said "it was chilly". But overall I think my notes were ok. I am just geting into this and with this practice I came up with symbols that I could have incorporated in order not to miss those things that I mentioned. If you feel you need to gain a bit more confidence to brush up on your English and be ready to start interpreting, I'd say keep practicing the language by speaking it, reading, writing, and even taking English classes if you can. Hi, Andrea! Technically yes, that is correct. In general, many online courses nowadays are only granting access for a certain period of time. However, you can always request extended access and sometimes they'll charge you an extension fee or something - not sure how this one in particular works. Keep in mind that there is also the "Note-taking Manual" that you can buy and keep forever. Hi Trang! I know, right? It's tricky because notes help but they can also be distracting. It's also something very personal and there is not a universal system that works for everybody. If you feel satisfied with your note-taking skills, awesome! if you feel they could use some work, check out Interpretrain's book or their course on note-taking. It was a game-changer for me.

I find it difficult to note the colours quickly and remember correctly what is of which colour
@Interprepedia
@Interprepedia 8 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for sharing! I totally get it because if we abbreviate Gr, for example, it can be Grey, or Green, right? What helps me in that case is to visualize the whole outfit and now I'm making 3-letter abbreviations for most colors (Gry = grey, Grn = green, Blu = blue, Blk = black, etc). This takes time to master as it's pretty much like learning how to read/write in a different way but it's doable! Thanks for being here!

¡Hola, Claudia!

can someone suggest how to take notes for difficult texts that involve talking wihtin legal, social, medical context? those texts are great for practice, but they do not represent actual topics i am dealing with at work
@Interprepedia
@Interprepedia Жыл бұрын
That’s a great inquiry! I totally agree. Some of the existing tools or courses use general conversation topics for practice but those don’t always represent the type of dialogue we have to interpret in real situations.

Hi, i'm just recently becoming an ES-EN interpreter. For remote work only. I found that I'm a much faster typer than a writer, since I pretty much haven't grabbed a pencil since I graduated college in 2014. Do you think this would be an impediment in the future? I really feel that typing keyboards are my forte, and I just feel that my handwriting (which is terrible btw) is just too poor and incomprehensible (even for me)
@Interprepedia
@Interprepedia Жыл бұрын
Congratulations on becoming an interpreter and starting this awesome new career! I am so happy to hear you say this… YOU are the new generation in the language services industry and have the power to change things… I also type much faster and better than I can write, and I struggled with the same issue along the way. I had to learn to take notes by hand because some companies do not allow typing and also because I wanted to get my certification and I knew that in order to pass the oral test I’d have to be proficient at taking notes by hand since computers are not allowed. I don’t fully understand or agree with the reasons laid out as to why some folks are so opposed to typing or the use of technology, but now that I interpret in person more than I do remotely, I can tell you that in some situations it’s not practical to type (you have to interpret standing up, or have to move around a room without a table or desk in front of you) and there are places were electronic devices are not even allowed 😭

For me it was easier to remember without note-taking. I found more difficult to note-take the story. I wrote long words. However, because I already listened to the story once, it was easier to remember what I had to write but my notes were poor.

Thanks so much for sharing! Absolutely! Some people are more visual and have a very good memory so notes can become distracting. I have a colleague in federal court who is amazing at what he does and never carries a single piece of paper to take notes 👀 Thanks for doing this little practice with me!

Hello , i'm a belgian student studying traduction and interpretation in English and Chinese but my first language is still French and i'm not so good at it ^^'. Whatever, for my try out whitout the notes i tried to remember everything from the beginning till the end and i lost track of the story so i didn't know what to say anymore and when i did it with my notes , i'd like to tell that i've never used any symbols like that so i just tried to wrote the words down but i couldn't keep with the rhythm and i did manage to get more information nevertheless i forgot a lot of information in the second part of the story

I did much better the second time when I took notes but I think it's much easier to follow anyway when you hear the story again. So why not changing the story between the two steps?
@Interprepedia

Hi ClaRuth! I'm happy to hear you did better the second time. Did you take notes? You have a very good point, maybe I should have changed the story 🤔 but I wanted to have the same baseline to demonstrate how notes help with recall. Many of us, even after hearing the story two or three times still have a hard time keeping up and remembering things accurately without taking notes. Thanks for being here!

I hate hate hate note-taking. It distracts me from being able to interpret to my full potential. distracts me from listening to what is being said. I usually can interpret most of what is said. i would say about 90% of it i can grasp accurately. the only thing i write down is numbers &/or lists of something or something similar. but apparently that isn't enough according to the classes i am taking. I was hoping this video would help me but the training program link on here is not super affordable as i am a single parent on government assistance.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Note-taking is definitely a controversial topic in our industry and many interpreters have a different point of view about it. For what it’s worth, there is a more affordable option than the online course. It’s The Note-Taking Manual from which the course was created. You can find it on Amazon for a fraction of the price of the course. Best of luck.
