Hi, I'm based in NYC. My native language is Bengali and I'm currently pursuing a Master's in English. I've significant experiences in translating as a volunteer and I'm considering getting certified. However, I'm unsure how the process looks like since I'm interested in medical interpretation in Bengali. Thoughts or any helpful links?

Great question! The NBCMI is attainable from Europe since you can take all tests online. CCHI does not offer the option to take the oral exam online. I can't answer if these are valid or recognized in Europe as I don't work on that continent, so I've never done any research in that regard.

Gracias por tu mensaje. 😊 Aunque por falta de tiempo no puedo ayudarte directamente a practicar inglés, te comparto algunas recomendaciones que me funcionaron: busca oportunidades para hablar con personas que no hablen español o que lo hablen muy poco, mira series con subtítulos en inglés, lee sobre temas que te interesen, escucha canciones en inglés e intenta descifrar la letra, y lee todo lo que te guste. Con práctica constante, ¡seguro lo logras! 💪✨

Well, the first time i missed more content, the second time I took notes, but it kind of distracted me a little, but I got more content, but I missed a couple of sentences at the end. Thank you Rosa, continue doing these types of exercises.

Great question! Given that your language of expertise is Arabic, as far as I know your only option at the moment would be CCHI as the NBCMI does not offer a full certification for Arabic interpreters.

Hi! Which test are you preparing for? If it’s the medical interpreting certification test, the required training course should prepare you. For court certification, there are many online options, so it’s hard to recommend just one. ¡Excelente pregunta! Para la interpretación por video, utilizo diferentes plataformas según la preferencia del cliente. Zoom ha sido la más popular, pero también he trabajado con Webex, Teams, Google Meet, Doxy y otras plataformas privadas de proveedores de servicios lingüísticos. En la mayoría de estas plataformas, sí he podido usar un fondo virtual.

Since New York is not part of what was formerly known as "The Consortium"-now the National Center for State Courts (NCSC)-the certification process there differs from what I discuss here. Right, depending on the situation I have even started opting for stating intended meaning rather than direct meaning while always keeping the original register. This way less time is wasted and you don't go back and forth especially when time is of the essence

Abuse of power is a sad hallmark of the legal profession. You had the client's best interest at heart and were wise to not make it an issue or it would have embarrassed the judge. Many in power positions DO NOT care about truth and want to take down a person of quality to make themselves feel superior.

I would have said: “For the record, the Interpreter stands by her interpretation”. If the Judge is interested to learn, teach him further, if not, leave it like that.
