This is one of the rare times in pokemon where the core story with the rivals was more interesting than the legendary story. The concept of competing in a grand tournament across the region made it feel more interesting than most rival stories. Hop has a more understandable arc than most rivals in my opinion too. He starts off obnoxiously optimistic due to his brother’s legacy, but as he goes on the weight of his losses against you and others bears down on him that he won’t be able to live up to expectations. All to come to terms with it and face off against you one last time at the climax… feels good despite being an overall mediocre game

@@ToebabyGaming - He’s actually pretty good at Pokémon, probably even from the start. He even gets to the point of being in the top 5 trainers in all of Britannia. For some reason this isn’t enough so he gives up entirely and decides to become a professor assistant, something which he showed absolutely no interest in before deciding to become one. His character arc is extremely weak, even for a Pokémon game.

It’s more like… He thought nepotism meant he’d be strong, lost a bunch to the player and Bede, who said he was a disgrace to Leon and he took it personally. Then he realizes that Leon and the player don’t make him strong, he makes himself strong, stakes everything on the semifinals match and still loses. Then he realizes the gap between the player and him, and the whole thing with the hairdo brothers teaches him that he likes helping pokémon and wants to know more about them so he wants to be a professor. It’s not super deep but it feels pretty serviceable to me.

Sword and Shield might be eh, but Hop is a great character. I think he's one of the first rivals to work on the concept of "What about the characters that are not flawless and always great at everything they do like the protagonist is". And I'm sure that if we were in the Pokemon world for real, most of us would never be as strong as Hop is anyway. I think only people who would manage to train their Pokemon following the rules of Pokemon strategy (probably at the cost of emotional attachment with their Pokemon) would go far. Gym Leaders, Elite Four members and the Champion would only be the best Pokemon strategists, and casual trainers wouldn't go far.

You can criticize higher-ups for horrible decisions & still appreciate the game developers for everything they created. The developers are the ones who work very hard to create what they can, they can't control their deadlines or resources that they are given. SwSh was rushed, but the developers did amazing considering everything that we already know & can understand about what happened during development of SwSh. The people in charge of making the biggest decisions at The Pokémon Company® don't care about quality of the Pokémon video games. However, even despite, we have developers at GameFreak trying their best for the current largest grossing media franchise, so I commend their work despite being upset/disappointed in large areas of SwSh.

Hop is one of the best characters in all of pokemon. I don't care if they stop you a bunch in your adventure. That dialogue is gives him legitimate character development which I truly love. He feels very human. Honestly, overall, the SWSH hate is incredibly unjust. These games were incredible.

I love how hop uses his GOAT instead of his starter. Rather than imitating how the player most likely dynamaxed there starter he chose to stick with his first and most important pokemon as his way of being cool and different.

Say what you will about Hop. I liked him. He went through some tough times. Losing to Bede really got to him, enough to change his team up multiple times (I sort of like this as it's realistic to the player changing their own team throughout the journey). But in the end, he learned to be his own person, and not piggyback off of his brother's success. And he was rewarded with his own legendary Pokemon! And even figured out what he wanted to do with his life. He has my respect even if he's bad at battles.
