Because the writers always try to tie it to _shamans_ and more animistic peoples, without realizing that there are centuries of collected lore on Christian Thaumaturgy, Jewish Kabbalah and Islamic magics to draw from. But no, we get a man wear a Halloween costume dancing around a fire, with no care given to the whys or hows of the magic, to summon a spirit of some kind.

Natives of the lands get superpowers? Natives how? How do you define a true native when, according to popular science, we all came from some place in Africa millions of years ago, and all the countries were one massive landmass (Pangaea)? How long do you have to live in a place to be a native? If you live abroad, do you still get the powers of your land (alien in New York, etc)? What happens to a person of mixed blood or who was conceived through alternate means? Grape, tube and surrogate babies, for example. Or is this another case of "the author spitting on people he or she doesn't like on the internet"?

You can make something political and have it age extremely well. Cyberpunk 2020 was written in the late 80s with several expansions through the 90s, and it's aged incredibly well. The trick is that you need to actually use your brain and try to extrapolate the direction politics is currently taking towards the future, and not just throwing up your hands and going "politics happened the way I wanted it to because I said so".
