Here is the solution to your problem (it's been a year but maybe you'll use it later on); NotesViewModel notesViewModel; Use the below line instead of these -> notesViewModel = ViewModelProviders.of(this).get(NotesViewModel.class); notesViewModel = new ViewModelProvider(this).get(NotesViewModel.class);
