Although I agree with the majority & order of this list there was one blaring omission who should have been in the top 10: Jürgen Rosenthal. He's a German rock drummer who was a member of Eloy, Uli Jon Roth's band Dawn Road, but became a member of the Scorpions, along with Roth and Francis Buchholz, when Dawn Road was annexed into a lineup with Klaus Meine and Rudolf Schenker.

Great, that you mentioned Marco. I would add some drummers from the more progressive side of music. First Nick D'Virgilio from Spocks Beard. Then there is Bobby Jarzombek from Fates Warning, Spastic Ink, Arch/Matheos etc. From the more heavy side I would add Thomas Haake from Meshuggah and Gojira's Mario Duplantier. But the one I miss most on your list is Nick Mason. He is by no means a drum god, who can play odd time signatures or super fast, but he always does exactly what the song needs, which, for me, let's him stand out as a drummer. I think, he is terribly underrated.

Personally one of my biggest drumming inspirations is Nick Crescenzo from The Dear Hunter. To me, he always finds the perfect balance between serving the song and showing off his virtuosity. All of his beats are so memorable and melodic that you can practically sing them. I realize that he can’t be compared to geniuses such as Neil Peart or Bill Bruford. But he has always had such an impact on me personally.

I am a drummer and I have been around for quite a while. I have seen most of the drummers listed, but failed to see some of the favourits elected, simply because they never came and play in my country, beautiful Portugal. Nevertheless, despite the fact that everyone can chose and vote in her or his preference - for it´s absolutely legitim - I think that some aspects should be considered in the choosing. I think it is not fair to compare drummers from different eras, mainly because music genres and technical support equipments have evolved incredibly. As an example, Buddy Rich never utilized double bass pedal (It was not available at the time), but his single foot pedal was incredible. His hands (especially the left) were astonishing, so where would he go, if the double bass drum pedal was easily around? I could go on forever in stating differences, but we haven´t the space and the time. But for me, there are two main features that each drummer should be able to convey. The first is his IDENTITY, that is present in his style and also his sound. If you know your preferred drummer, you will always recognize him. The other feature is the GROOVE, that is to say the ability to make the drums sing. Having said this, I think that - troughout history - there have been a coulple of hands full of good drummers, and they were voted for the Hall of Fame, of some of the best magazines and lists of critics. I have my favourits, surely, but it is an extensive list, for it reaches a wide number of genres, types and styles of music. Sadly some are already dead, but we have great drummers in the present time, and some are really killer monster drummers. For now, I will only refer to two of the most complete and UNIQUE drummers of all time, that each and every drummer who knows the drums, recognize as the most influentional of all. The first, in the rock world was John Bonham; since his departure, there never was another that could match his power and ability. The other, in the jazz world was Tony Williams; he was Miles Davis drummer, and was only 17 years old. Then he became a God. What a finesse and at the same time, powerfull sound.

Agree on Bill Bruford Listen to his playing on Yes Album, Fragile and Close To The Edge - you can listen to his playing and never tired of it, it's so damn wonderfully fluid and unpredictably amazing Rush my favourite band and I dearly love Neil's playing, but Bill just edges it Alan White a bit surprised about - he's pretty unremarkable compared to Mr Bruford and the band never sounded so adventurous after BB left
Fantastic. Good choices although I don’t know all the guys you mentioned. Bruford and Phil Collins are rightly in there. Anyone wanting to hear Collins play his “beautiful style” as Neil Peart once described it when he talked of Genesis Selling England by the Pound album would be best served listening to Dancing with the moonlit knight and realising how difficult it must have been to come up with parts to play on music like this...

Ginger Baker of Cream, for sure. His drumming in "White Room" is fantastic. It's easy to get lost in the texture of the song, because of Eric Clapton's master class in soloing with the wah-wah pedal, and Jack Bruce's spot-on bass and lead vocals, but Baker's contribution is just as important on this classic recording. Still, you can choose just about any song by that group and be blown away by his drumming. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIOcYZqHYrh8l7s Session drummer Hal Blaine who passed away earlier this week at age 90, was the most recorded musician in history. A key member of the renowned Wrecking Crew, he played in 35,000 sessions and on 6,000 singles, 150 US top 10 hits, 40 of which went to number one, including six consecutive Grammy Award Record of the Year winners from 1966-1971. drummagazine.com/remembering-hal-blaine-2-5-29-3-11-19/ Brian Wilson called him "the greatest drummer ever", and The Knack's late Bruce Gary once famously expressed disappointment to find out that a ten of his favorite drummers all turned out to be Hal Blaine.
