" the 900 is not a 990 replacement" I guess it's more like an 880 replacement. Maybe that's why they haven't come out with a DT 800 Pro X yet.

Transparent is different from neutral. Neutral is true to the mix by the sound engeneer, as flat as possible. Transparent is true to the subjective perception of the instruments. Neutral is objective whereas transparent is subjective. It takes me a looong time to really figure out this important difference. Edit : treble emphasis imo enhance the sentiment of transparency but move away from neutrality.

Nice detailed review as always. I like the new look and detachable cable but thats where it ends for me im afraid. I don't like the new cheapo pads which no longer have the perforations underneath. These perforations actually improve soundstage and the fact that these new pads are also proprietary meaning you can no longer pad roll if you already own beyers other pads is an odd direction to take. Also ive said this before that they are using too much damping over the driver to achieve a target on a FR graph. They just sound muffled to me when compared directly with the 990 and 1990 which have a lot less damping.

i just got this, in terms of detail and sound profile, i like them. they are fun to listen to for music and even games. the issue as mentioned in this vid is that they arent too comfortable. the clamping force is crazy! but maybe keeping them on some sort of stand or stack of books will fix it . i felt like it was close to philips fidelio x2hr in terms of profile. ofcourse these seems to me as more technical.

Did you ever get used to them? After the first hour I was disappointed in their comfort. Then I extended the headband a bit and they became the most comfortable headphone I've used. I legitimately almost fell asleep with them on the next two nights.
@bananawarlock3981
@bananawarlock3981 10 ай бұрын
That has been my experience as well. I have owned the 700 Pro X since it came out and got the 900 some time ago and both were not the most comfortable out of the box simply due to clamping force, but in everything else, especially the pads and how my ears fit inside them, a perfect 9/10. Then the clamping softened and they became 10/10 the most comfortable. I have bigger ears and almost all round shaped pads will touch either the bottom or top of them, most likely both and it will become irritating very quickly. With some headphones, it takes maybe two hours. With others, such as the Beyerdynamic TYGR (probably my all time favourite sound wise) it takes 5 minutes. The Beyerdynamic DT x00 Pro X series became the first headphones in my whole life that I can say I can wear for hours on end. I've fallen asleep with the 700's on more than once, even with my old worn pads. It's always sad to me when I hear people saying they're uncomfortable, as they're truly fantastic around my own ears.

Wow, what a goldmine of details about various headphones in your review. Great job. I heard Sundara mentioned at around 16 minutes 20. I mostly want to use them for recording vocals, mixing and mastering but also to listen to good not too boring sound and gaming (my son) (meaning a good 3d capacity is needed). WOuld the HIFIman Sundara be good: Heard about them before? I don't want sibilance or too harsh higher tones nor treble, vocals, but enough clarity to evaluate the singing. When open, one tends to increase the volume and I don't want tinnitus for my son or me.
@NoThemeReviews
@NoThemeReviews 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think the Sundara are perfectly agreeable headphones. They do tend to rank well in regards to clarity, detail, and soundstage. But, they don't emphasize bass--and there's a notable sub-bass roll-off, which is typical for planar magnetic headphones. But, all things considered, it's a safe choice, though your experience might differ.

I have both the 990 and 900. I didn't want to like the 900. But it ended up making me despise my 990. The 900 is more comfortable, has much fuller sound, better bass without drowning out other frequencies, and much much much better directional/imaging audio. I've seen so many people hype up the 990s imaging and precise audio. I've had a complete opposite experience. Absolute sht imaging imo. They're also more bass heavy than I think most people realize. I eq the bass down 3db and suddenly I can hear other things in games. But still very vague in terms of how close someone is in a game or whether they're above or below me. Extremely overrated for gaming if you're actually a good fps player and not some casual who wants a general direction of where things are. Music wise with their default eq they sound good for rock music mainly, but everything else they're just lackluster and annoying if the song is treble heavy. With eq dabbling they become quite good. But I honestly felt that the 900s sounded better plugged into my macbook pro without a dac or eq than the 990s sounded with a dac/preamp. Which is quite sad.

The point of this model is to be a smoothed out, slightly less analytical version of the 990 and 1990. It ticks the boxes that were missing from them in an affordable package. I was tickled pink to buy a used set of 1990s before the 900 Pro X came out and even at the heavy discount, the 900's are better overall, especially because they don't NEED an amp, which usually adds 50-100% to your initial cost. Even your 990s you mention in 250 ohm - you still need a dac/amp for them which more than doubles their total cost. Beyerdynamic does listen to feedback, which is why they have so many models offering similar things to appease so many picky people. Much like Sennheiser. HD 598, HD 650, HD 800. Nothing else needed for their entire lineup of consumer / audiophile headphones, unless they made a wired version of the Momentum to fill the closed back category.

@bretts7037
@bretts7037 2 жыл бұрын
@@tecno4u31 No, the 1990 is better, if you can justify spending more than double the cost on the headphones and then double that again to get a proper amp to drive them. The 900 Pro X is just the sweet spot because while it will sound better with an amp, it still sounds amazing directly from a PC if you have a quality motherboard.
@paulwoaert
@paulwoaert 11 ай бұрын
You don't need any DAC if you plug in 250 ohm headphones (like the 990 pro) into a 2021 Macbook Pro or any Macbook Air from 2022 models, because they all have a jack output ( sound card) for high-impedance headphones. A youtuber have also tested this here on youtube and there is no significant problem.

It always amazes me when people describe how loud a sound is. You said "beyond reasonable levels" then later revealed you were on a liquid spark. That amp does not get loud enough for me. I'm a DJ and I frequently go to clubs and concerts which puts me on the louder end of the spectrum. That level that you described as unreasonable is my minimum. I used to have the spark and upgraded to the liquid platinum for that very reason. As a reviewer, have you surveyed listening levels or did you assume everyone's perception of your terminology?
@NoThemeReviews
@NoThemeReviews 2 жыл бұрын
There is no objective method for me to use. If you’re using an amp at home in a fairly quiet environment, the experience is different from DJ-ing in a club using that same amp. But that’s only half the problem. The passive noise isolation of your headphones plays a significant role in how much volume you adjust, not to mention the sensitivity of the drivers. Then there’s the separate issue of the track, and whether the levels were adjusted. So, no, there isn’t some survey I or anyone else can use. It’s a case by case situation. I assume people are able to figure for themselves what reasonable volume is for them. I never said my reasonable volume is everyone else’s. How would you describe volume?

Well - the resistance has a lot to say when it comes to "loudness". Driving my 250ohm DT1990's of my oppo HA2-Se never gets uncomfortably loud, whereas my DT 700 pro X can get very very loud in comparison (48Ohm). And as a reviewer, he should probably remain around healthy decibel levels for how loud it should be. I wouldn’t say it’s a step up or down, the two are very different. The 900 is much more neutral, while the 1990 has upper mid/lower treble spikes. The 1990 might be a little clearer and more detailed, but it also exhibits audible bass distortion in sun-bass at loud amplification. So…it just depends on what you’re looking for. You haven't addressed the issue of comfort very much. Does the Dt 900 proX fit tighter on the head than the Dt 990 pro, more or less comfortable ? On the question of the sound itself, your presentation and your observations are not only the best I have heard in a long time on Beyerdynamic models (and headphones in general) but also the most reliable. I'm going to look in your list of videos if you have already analyzed the AKG K702 (or 701) and the Meze 99 Classics (or Meze Neo). These models attract me a priori. I'm also hesitant at the moment about purchasing the DT 880 250 ohms from Beyerdynamic. The use I will make of my headphones is listening to interviews, radio discussions, etc. (therefore: the rendering of voices as less muffled as possible), but also listening to a very circumscribed musical repertoire: ancient and modern classical music, 19th century and much of the 20th century: pianistic works by Schumann, Liszt, Chopin, orchestral works and melodies by Mahler, Richard Strauss, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, etc., quartets by Alban Berg, Bartok, Ravel, quartets by Shostakovich, etc.) BUT ALSO many archive recordings jazz recordings from say 1920 to 1950.

I don’t like to say that any given headphone is best for one genre of music or another; that’s simply far too subjective. All I can offer is that the 900 is a fairly neutral sound signature, and while it does not excel in any technical aspects, it does a good job presenting a wide variety of genres.

Yeah I answer questions. I once heard the Cloud Alpha at a demo, but it’s been a very long time and I don’t recall how it sounds. But, I think it has a bass emphasis, like most gaming headphones. So, the 900 will likely be less bassy than the Cloud Alpha S.

Is the amount of detail heard from a headphone simply due to the frequency response (louder treble)?
@NoThemeReviews
@NoThemeReviews 2 жыл бұрын
It's not merely because of an increase in treble. There's a lot that goes into it, including the tuning across the frequency range, earpads, damping, and of course the music. Merely increasing treble isn't going to make a headphone with average detail sound analytical--it'll just sound really, really harsh.

@@مباركبنكعببنسعدالتميمي The x25bt is clearer and provides more detail than the 900. But it also has a significant vocal push, particularly in sibilance. I don't think the Austrian Audio headphones are "accurate". They aren't neutral, and are tools for analytical listening. Saw your review after I ordered myself a pair of 900 X’s and now having second thoughts about it. I’m not sure whether you’re still seeing comments of this video or if you’ll reach back. I ultimately boiled down my choice between 990 Pro and 900 X’s. Seeing your review, two points clearly stand out. The Subject of Clarity/Detail and Soundstage. 1.) Clarity/Detail - You mention, the 990 have an edge over the detail between the two. Is it legitimately a more detailed headphone over all bands or is it because of Over-Exposure of Highs, considering how there’s significant boost in the shimmering top end in 990’s and that’s where I reckon 900 X takes a backseat, Since it’s in comparison a darker headphone with subdued highs. If so, Can I hope for equal amounts of detail in 900 X’s through EQ? 2.) Soundstage - As you mention, 990’s have a wider soundstage than the X’s. If you were to rank on a scale as to how wide both headphones are, would you place 990’s significantly higher? Is there a major difference in terms of stereo field, soundstage? I’m hoping you’d take these questions. I’ve spent nearly twice as much and now it’s bugging me if I’ve made the right decision. Anyway, Cheers for the review. Much helpful, Precise and most importantly Honest.

A treble emphasis is one method of inducing an impression of greater detail. If the emphasis adds an "airiness" to the sound, then that also might give the impression of greater soundstage. So, to answer your questions: 1. The 990's greater detail is a combination of treble emphasis and bass de-emphasis, or roll-off. Some sounds can be brighter, sharper, or more obvious compared to the 900. Some details are simply not apparent on the 900, while just about perceivable on the 990. 2. I'd say that the 990's soundstage is noticeably wider. It's pretty easy to hear that difference in an A/B comparison. Arguably you may come somewhat closer to the 990's performance by EQ-ing the 900...but you'd have your work cut out for you. It's not just an issue of increasing treble. You'd have to make various adjustments throughout the range, and assuming you have a 20-band EQ, you might be able to get some place you're happy. But that'll all be trial and error. I suppose it's a matter of what you're expecting from your headphones. If you want details and clarity with reasonably wide soundstage, then the Austrian Audio headphones are a better alternative than any Beyer. But, if you want a more neutral rendition, then you'll have to accept some compromise in detail and clarity. Hope this helps.

@@NoThemeReviewsThanks for the reply. This has brought me some clarity, certainly. Austrian Audio don't seem to deliver where I'm from, I would've happily considered them if that weren't the case. I am really starting to wonder why beyer would place these at the 300 dollar mark. I suppose, I'm stuck with these. The detail and soundstage holds a lot of water to me. Do you think I should return these and get 990's? Would you do it?
