In May of 2022 at just 34 years old, Patrick Behan, the head boys’ basketball coach at St. John's College High School in Washington DC, was diagnosed with ALS. He was given just a year to live. While adjusting to the diagnosis and the devastating effects that come with it, basketball has become a form of medicine for Patrick, as he looks to win his first championship in the most competitive high school basketball league in the country.

I remember taking his English class 10 years ago. Was super awesome and inspired my love for working in sports and reading. I looked forward to going to school everyday to talk about the assigned books and obviously update the magnetic nba standings board. Now, I’m inspired by his grit and strength to coach amidst such a grueling battle. Praying for the best for Mr. Behan🙏

I’m in tears. I was diagnosed in May 2017. It’s a brutal disease. Inspiring to see you fight so hard. I know how exhausting just brushing your teeth is. Taking just 4 or 5 steps. So glad your team gave you that championship. Their lives are forever changed . God bless you and your family.
