However, once in a blue moon, an unpredictable catastrophe (a meteor striking the dam or maybe a big earthquake) causes the dam to give way without anyone being able to do anything about it, this being everything happening all at once.

It already gave. We're in the brutal times right now. It's just the early stages. We probably have at least a few generations before the final end of the US. People think the collapse is gonna be some sudden explosive event. It's not. It's going to be a steady increase in general misery and hardship, and a steady decline in standard of living across the board. The US government will slowly shrink in scope and power, loosing the ability to control territory until the vast majority of the continent will be divided up between foreign enclaves, hill tribes made up of the descendants of preppers, and localized urban warlords, until finally someday probably a hundred years from now or more, the last vestiges of the United States will wither away and die and nobody will even notice except whatever hill tribes or urban gangs might happen to exist in the DC area at the time.

The problem with Nothing Ever Happens is it's a quite short term view on long term problems, wherein uninformed people will look at a long stretch of nothing having happened, but a series of near misses, and conclude all chatter on the topic is just that, useless chatter. Because nothing has happened, so that must mean nothing will happen. But each near miss sets the likelihood that It Happens on a higher floor each time, and once the floor of Almost But Didn't Happen hits the ceiling of It Happened, that's when it happens. Nothing Ever Happens is the argument made by people who are not paying attention, do not know the history, and want to insult you for trying to warn them. It is the viewpoint of the instantly gratified, for whom if It Didn't Happen Today, then that must mean It Will Never Happen.

In France politically, we expected some boring year with just the european elections (not a top-tier election...) and still got served : Macron dissolved the parliament leading to very chaotic legislative elections, which resulted in a 3-ways-split parliament that took 3 months to decide on who to name PM, who fell early december while trying to vote the budget. Most politically chaotic year that I can remember. At least it wasn't boring.

Yes, but you are in France. Your national gesture is the Gallic shrug of insouciance, which is the quintessential expression of one's capitulation to the fact that nothing worth caring about is happening. We Brits have collectively all enacted one great big Gallic shrug back at you, because you are France and we simply don't care enough to pay attention to the possibility of something happening.

Regarding WW3, you must keep in mind that in the 30s lots of people saw WW2 coming, and lots of people said "don't be silly, of course there won't be another world war". The one thing that we can be sure about is that _whatever_ happens, lots of people are going to get it wrong.

I remember saying that phrase to mock the people who had latched onto terms like "false flag" as if it were the only possible scenario. I don't feel good about being correct. For those wondering, I'm not besmirching the concept of false flags or that they've ever happened; I'm specifically talking about the people who likely don't understand the concept on its own, and are only using it as a political cudgel in debates.

Here, in the US, if "it's happening" was true, many people within the fed gov would be behind bars after all the House and Senate hearings, which end with prosecution recommendations being sent to the DOJ. Have you witnessed anyone being prosecuted over the last ten years?

True, quartz is everywhere. But for silicon wafers it's very much about purity. Not the best analogy - but there is also lots of carbon to be found, but not many high quality diamonds are part of the total.

It makes for a great meme, but also feels like one of the most catastrophic goal post moving ops I've ever heard. "Trump got grazed in the ear, but not actually killed despite being setup for this?" Nothing ever Happens "Russia invaded Ukraine, igniting the first hotwar in Europe involving a Great Power since WW2, but no one used Nuclear Arms?" Nothing Ever Happens. I get the meaning of "calm down with the sensationalization", but its utter nonsense. By the time "Something Happens" we'll all be directly involved in a horrible war/plague/civilizational collapse. Update: Based Harry.

bro do you have any idea how much crazy shit people claim is around the corner constantly and the funny thing is most of the stuff they said was this huge event Israel, Biden claims, election, presidential assassination attempts, hurricanes, is just the regular churn of nations. Some stuff South Korea, Assad no one predicted. This whole meme is just an excuse for dumb claims just like conspiracy theorists claiming the CIA's psi-op is the only reason people don't take them seriously.
@AShockToTheSystem20 күн бұрын
The worst part is that, when eventually Something Happens, people simply accept it as the new norm. Their new miserable living conditions become the new normal, and they don't question it, as if it was always like that. Nothing Ever Happens becomes a mantra for those that don't want to do anything, or a cope for those cynical about pointless sensationalism in the media.

@AShockToTheSystem exactly, its an overreaction to the Tim Pools of the world. I get where they're coming from, but yes they fucking do happen. Whether the wheel turns slowly, or slowly and then all at once, it absolutely turns. Just useless analysis most of the time.
