I'm still on the road trying to keep up with your videos. Wow, what a climb. I think my old butt and this loaded fatbike would have taken 5 hours to get to the top but it was beautiful up there. I could have taken in those views for quite a while. You're so right about it not always being glamorous. Lol. Great video you two. You're always fun. Keep it up, Tony

Excellent ride. This route brings back beautiful memories for me when I cycled it in the opposite direction from Montrose to Grand Junction up over the Grand Mesa. In 2012 - 126-mile day and approx, 8,000 feet of climbing. The climb from the Montrose side up over the Grand Mesa side to Grand Junction is amazing, forests, lakes, bighorn sheep. The view and the descent from the top of the Mesa looking out over Grand Junction were beyond amazing, can see the canyons to the west. I remember the same views as your excellent video portrays. Thank you.

It sounds like you had a very memorable ride. The longer days make it much more rewarding and usually much harder to forget! Did you descend down the gravel road towards Grand Junction?
@StephanieHughesDesign4 жыл бұрын
@@Henrywildeberry No. Good point. We descended down the road we were on road bikes which is further to the east of the gravel road where you were. Forget the highway number. Beautiful wide open road descent with lots of shoulder. Approx 4,000 foot descent from the top of the Grand Mesa. The view was beyond belief with the canyons on the horizon and Grand Junction to the left. We then road west through a canyon along a river into Grand Junction.You got to see it all, gravel, road and the descent on the southern side which I climbed.

Great ride and story. I 70 can be a white knuckle ride in a burly man oil field truck (experienced). Dirt road touring in Utah and Colorado is great but the routes do not always connect to where you want to go. Many of the modern highways were created by brute force of machinery in the 20th Century and not the indigenous pathways or the natural course of topography. BTW, Grand Junction is Colorado’a wine country, so I was amused by the selection of Vivaldi on the ride back down to the valley.
@Henrywildeberry4 жыл бұрын
It looks like it took decades to build some of the highways there. The evidence can still be seen of drilling into the rock with holes that were 20 feet deep are just mind boggling. Add to that the volume of rock they moved must have taken thousands of train loads. They literally moved mountains. I was also fascinated by the various layers of rock, each having a unique color and composition. How they layered, and figuring out the stories of the earth evolving must be a geologists dream out there.

I would like a gravel road tour where I could stay at a lodge every night. Do such routes exist anywhere?

Northern Nevada has some long long gravel roads with small to tiny towns along the way,with planning a ride could be town to town.....Here in nor cal there are gravel roads heading to coast from inland that tend to be steep,but could easily go town to town.

What's the lowest gear ratio you and Cools have on your bike? 1:1?
@Henrywildeberry4 жыл бұрын
I have a 0.93:1 and Ms. Cools has 0.82:1
@bengt_axle4 жыл бұрын
@@Henrywildeberry Well it certainly takes a lot of perseverance to do that kind of touring. 50 lbs of weight is a lot and just because you have very low gears doesn't make it easy because at a very low gear ratio you are hardly moving. I cold not do such a tour without being clipped in, especially going up hill, because you cannot pull up. Hats off to Ms. Cools. It also seems especially tough because the route is so remote that it looks like even getting water must be difficult.
