"I am only allowed the lightest touch, I can compose and shoot without hesitation or interruption and anything more than that ruins it"
This is a short piece about Street Photography, why street photography is so special, and why Cebu, Philippines is such a special place for it. I recently spent some time in Moalboal Cebu, spending time doing documentary photography for a fine art photography project I have in the works. I used my Fujifilm x100v to shoot all the photos featured, with fuji recipes to assist me in the edit.
Many more photos are available on my instagram:

PHOTOS EDITED USING MY OWN PRIVATE LIGHTROOM PRESETS.
If you think they're worth selling then I might set something up.
Film footage is emulated.

Its uncommon for me to find a foreigner who film, not only the beautiful parts of my country, but as well as the realistic parts of it. Philippines may be pretty with nature and its resources, but there's also the streets, the small houses, the basketball court godssXD as well as the look on people's faces and children. It makes the whole thing realistic and human and am glad you're showing that aspect of the Philippines to the world. Because not only it is pretty, but its also real.

I remember when I was there, GF got lost and we ended up in a slum. Seeing a teenage girl bathing in the street with her clothes on, because none of the shacks had any sort of plumbing... That was QUITE a shock for young me.

I never thought I was a deeply creative person. Never considered myself all that capable of art. My perspective is shifting somewhat this year. I picked up a camera for the first time and began shooting what I saw on the street in the UK where my wife and I moved. Brief moments of meeting people, of spotting good light, of the movement of the city are lost on normal days. I don’t pay attention to them usually. Picking up a camera is changing that. I’m seeing so much more as I slow down and just pay attention. Love your work. You’ve been deeply inspiring to me this year as you’ve worked with honesty and integrity through burn out. Thank you.

I've listened to this at least 5 times now and I love to just sit there and imagine this monologue with any other topic- illustrating vs. painting, scripting vs. improv, gardening vs. flower arranging. There are so many spectrums of art, each with their own unique ups and downs that make you feel so... Captured by the process, especially when you're used to doing something just one way and suddenly have to get used to this brand new way of thinking to produce the same quality as before. This is why I love talking with other artists about their style and how they view it. Like, people tell me I have an eye for color and I never noticed before, but when I tell them their anatomy is admirable they shrug it off. We're so used to our mundane perspective of our art, that recreating it via a different method is world changing some times.

Amazing. Your short films made me start thinking about getting back into photography, something I haven't done in 35+years... And now you've gotten into the exact type of photography I was considering because it is exactly what I was looking for: a form that is about relationships and not bound by all the externalities of the process. Thank you for posting this essay, it really reinforces the ideas that I've had about photography.

I'm definitely much more of a snapshot kinda person. When I see photos of myself that were staged the first thing that typically comes to mind is how painful of a process it was to get everything right. Whether it's the background, the lighting, the angle, the positioning and posing of each individual, getting everyone in the shot to cooperate, to say nothing of the tears of frustration from the photographer. Whereas when I see snapshots I'm reminded immediately of the occasion that the photo was taken to document or commemorate.

These - both the insightful thoughts and the stunning photography - are sooo cool! I don't doubt for a second that you could sell those photographs! As a visual artist on the painting/sketching/drawing side of things, I wonder how this thought might apply to my art - maybe it, too, can be divided into the art that I and others conceptualise and the art that simply captures the moment. I've always been heavy on the former side, dreaming and depicting made-up scenes and characters, but your thoughts inspire me to try something else, to try and capture a moment, allowing myself only the slightest touch.

I never knew that you did street photography but like you said, you like filmmaking. I love doing street photography but in black and white. I think that it makes the lighting in a photo more dramatic and helps make an interesting contrast between highlights and shadows. I always enjoy listening to other people's opinion on what they like about this type of photography. I love the way you try to look for a story with each of your photos and it's true that you only have one frame to show it. Now you have inspired me to start experimenting with taking photos in colour. Keep up the great work Mumbo 👍

He took my heart and made me feel whole. I know that what he was saying wasn't meant to do that, but he sounds so earnest and real. Mumbo as a person has a voice that draws you in, makes you want to listen. He could have done something like become a politician or doing public speaking so the fact that hes making a video about the beauty in the mundane is just so beautiful to me. I know he said that he hasn't found the story in his shoots yet, but I see them. The story of normal people going about normal lives. A woman going on a jog to better herself, a kindly old lady sharing her wisdom, a child enjoying a treat from the vendor. That's the beauty of Mumbo, he doesn't focus on what we would think as exciting in the moment. He shows us people, real people in the moment, and draws us into their story with his words without even trying. The way he was speaking made me feel like i was on a road trip with a friend, it made me feel less alone. Mumbo challenged himself to make something beautiful out of the mundane, and the fact that he succeed in a way that brought tears to my eyes is a testimite to his talents and work ethic. You did good Mumbo, you did good.
