Let's not overlook the humble chord player....so we all wish for such absolute mastery of music. Sublime comping, brilliant soling. Herbie Hancock, half man, half piano.

Half man, half piano, yes, but I GOTTA believe there’s a healthy dose of alien DNA… which I know throws off the percentages, but… lol!

brecker's solo is incredible, and then herbie's solo is even better, and then buster william's is my favorite. never have i seen a bass solo on a song this fast, especially with no accompaniment, keep the momentum going this much.

As Miles once told Herbie, don't always play just the butter notes. I think he listened. WOW! And Michael just plowing through those arpeggios like a snow ball rolling down a hill picking up speed along the way. A driving rhythm section makes all the right stops in time! Bravo!

Al Foster swings harder than the King's golden gate. What a master! Check out how much he milks the ride cymbal on this tune. So much taste....

The "mean" Brecker! :P This is one of my favorite performances of Nothing Personal. Of course Hancock and Foster are co-genius brothers, so is Williams, but Brecker's solo is so mean and cheeky, the man was absolutely on his jazz top there.

I like the way Michael pays a little homage to Wayne before he goes full Brecker mode. After all hes playing with Herbie.

Good point. He really does sound like Wayne early in solo.

Mike Brecker's explosion of in-and-out arpeggios after 3:00 is the very essence of the modern jazz solo. Herbie's expression at 3:30 says it all. What a group...

@yggdrasil90395 жыл бұрын
Nothing personal, but while Herbie's solo is amazing, I don't think his comping is really in harmony with Michael during his solo, which really need more of a harmonic platform for Michael to act against. When Herbie comes out with such amazing harmonic voicings it's just wonderful and it's a shame he didn't bring that to bear in this solo, rather than trying to compete with the soloist.
@Osnosis3 жыл бұрын
This is more of a ‘building on fire’ situation, so the comping is really percussive more than harmonic.
