3rd parties also estimate BOM for various phones. Pretty easy to do as component prices are publicly available. If you were ever curious what the Apple tax is compared to the most popular flagships, its around 0-5% of the final sale price at launch; less where VAT must be added.

I'd buy it. Phones in the 6.0-6.3" range just make the most sense to me. Any larger and you're in tablet territory. I think one of the biggest reasons you don't find more people buying "smaller" phones is that no company is putting 5000-6000 mAh batteries in them. I am surprised, however, that MKBHD didn't request a headphone jack.

Well, the problem with big batteries is that they make the phone thick, and that just doesn't feel as good in the hand. Not that big phones feel good in the hand. I'd rather have a phone that does power saving magic (As sony did with the Z3 Compact, crazy efficient screen on that one) than the latest and greatest. The problem is that in the current market there isn't even any choice anymore. The smallest (android) phone on the market is the Samsung S24/S25 and I will never buy a Samsung, or iPhone for that matter. Xiaomi, Lenovo and Google make somewhat normal sized phones. Every other phone is a phablet. If you can't use the whole screen with one hand it's not a small phone.
@312bigbeanburrito
@312bigbeanburrito Күн бұрын
@@hmartinlb thick phones don't feel worse in the hand. Width and height are vastly more important metrics because having to move your thumb more causes more strain, along with whether the corners/sides are flat or rounded. Also materials. Phones are already so thin that doubling the thickness of the average phone could give massive battery life with negligible hit to hand ergonomics. The only reason phones are thin is because of techno-fetishism and aesthetics.
@hmartinlb
@hmartinlb Күн бұрын

MKBHD knows about tech, thats why he didnt request an sd slot or a headphone jack. those are useless features on a phone that only people who dont know about storage solutions and audio equipment want, the casual consumer of technology. which is fine, there are plenty cheap phones that offer those features. sd cards are completely irrelevant in the face of portable storage devices like ssds, especially portable NVME drives, and a headphone jack in a smartphone is pointless if the DAC inside the phone is shitty. 99% of even flagships have a less than decent DAC, because its obviously not something 99% of people even know anything about, or even exists, so it doesnt matter. people who actually care about listening to music with good audio will use a dedicated device for it with a good DAC and amplifiers. everyone else can just use wireless earbuds, like MKBHD does. ALSO, they sell them for like 30 bucks now or less, theres literally less than no point in phones having audio jacks anymore. plus, you can either get a usb-c pair of earbuds, or an adapter to usb-c for regular wired earbuds.

Its a fun concept thinking about people's dream phones. I know no one cares about but here is my dream phone specs. SoC: Snapdragon 8 Elite Memory: 16GB RAM and 512/1TB memory. Screen: 6.5 to 6.7 inch QHD 144HZ Oled Camera: 1 inch main camera, 50MP 3X Zoom, 50MP 10X Zoom, 50MP Ultra-wide, 16MP front camera with auto focus. Battery: 6000mAh It would be kinda weird having a lot of cameras but with a design like Xiaomi 14 Ultra it could be great, I love to use all of the cameras when taking my photos and I use zoom a lot when travelling or watching an event, since I also play a lot recently, having a bigger screen with 144hz is perfect (for me) to have a good gameplay also with competitive games.

The crazy thing about this, at this quoted figure, using my own low guess (emphasis on low) of a phone like this being sold at $1200 full price, $800 on sale; they would only need to sell between 33,622 to 78,450 units to recoup all their costs, which sounds so attainable (right??).

They did ignore several factors too like how they talked about the fact that factories don't trust newer companies leading to higher costs and also stuff like marketing and advertising was completely ignored. It's not really as ez as it looks

Marketing, advertising, distribution, contracts with networks and other retailers, international distribution and tariffs, and various taxes per device and on total profits. Failed units, stolen units and broken units on arrival needing free replacement, warranty program supporting the phone for free repairs and replacement, ongoing staff costs for the support length of the phone. This was purely how much the baseline to develop and get a single example handset from idea to physically existing.

I thought they'd at least touch on the marketing and distribution as well. People think a device can just magically teleport from the parts store to the factory and then into their hands with an at-cost price lol, the manufacturing will be the cheapest part. Cost per unit will depend on the scale though. *Things I can think: - making commercials - buying TV spots - buying billboard ads - tarifs for international retail - sponsorships, brand ambassadors - keeping social media active around current products Strangely, in the past it felt like only a couple of companies would innovate and the others would copy (saving cost in R&D) but nowadays interesting things come from any company lol, even if rare

@TheMightyHams
@TheMightyHams Күн бұрын
I imagine it'll have something to do with removing every single component from the motherboard and attaching/soldering it onto the new one. Plus the chip/RAM/Memory is probably affixed to the motherboard, so it'll probably be easier just to source a brand new motherboard with all of that already attached. I imagine that's where the cost is coming from. Same issue with laptops.

@arwlyx
@arwlyx Күн бұрын
@@TheMightyHams Based on my experience, the reason why I think it's so expensive to replace a logic board at official tech support for these devices is because it costs them more money to actually fix them, simple as that. Replacing a logic board is far easier (needs techs with lower skill levels = cheaper labor), and it's faster than having a motherboard diagnosed and fixed by a more experienced tech (again, they don't need those if they just replace them). Technically, it might bring some more peace of mind, given that the device leaves with a whole new board. I'm sure the fact that they have to build extra logic boards that instead of going for whole devices, they're spares for warranty repairs (which they don't get paid for) plays a role. And they'd rather you just buy a new phone. lol I've worked as an electronics repair tech, at a shop that was doing official warranty repairs for a big tool supplier in Europe. For walk-in customers, we'd diagnose and do board repair, for them, 90% of repairs were whole board swaps.

R&D prices are exaggerated, especially for hardware. I am unsure if you are unaware or simply ignoring the fact, but most phones are quite similar both internally and externally. Therefore, the high costs are unjustified unless there is truly innovative technology involved. The hardware you mentioned is typical for high-end phones. The cost of software development can vary greatly depending on the project, but the hardware component is relatively inexpensive. Ultimately, you are making excellent profit margins; otherwise, you wouldn't be in this line of work. Consider the numerous affordable phones that have great hardware and are constructed with premium materials; however, their software limitations are what hinder their success.

I wanted to understand why these companies seem to dislike the niche of common-sense smartphones. It's simple: a compact smartphone with a headphone jack at the bottom, a single, I repeat, just a single good rear camera, front-facing speakers, no punch-hole for the front camera (similar to the Xperia line), aluminum construction, and strong software support. You know, OnePlus is what it is because OnePlus models from 1 to 5 were like that. But brands prefer to be just another drop in the ocean, stuffing smartphones with junk in hopes of striking luck and appealing to some average audience.
