Amazing how a forty year old bike can still put a smile on your face. No Imu, no abs, no traction control. 😀👍

I have the old one and unlike most newer bikes it always puts a big smile on my face when riding it. Besides, handling is amazing and it’s light weight makes life so much easier, especially as you get older..

The first motorcycle I purchased new was a 1978 R80/7. As much as it was a wonderful bike in its day, I really have no desire to go back in time. I’m spoiled by all the modern electronics, safety, and power that’s available to motorcyclists today 😃🏍👍. Thanks for bringing us a “Blast from the past” !!! 🤪

Very entertaining. Beautiful example of a lovingly restored classic. Christian seems to be a true gentleman. I love my boxer powered R1200s which basically is the ultimate hot rod version of the "hex head". It will actually lift the front wheel off of the ground without slipping the clutch. Once you have owned a boxer it gets into your blood. This video made my day!

Exactly! It's like an insidious disease. I'm a late starter - bitten in 2010. On my 3rd boxer now. R1100S to start - what a great machine. Then an R1200S - more power, less weight, with sublime handling and that rarity factor - only around 200 of these still registered in the UK. Horrendous pillion provision though. Now have the closest successor to the 12S - the 1250RS. Still miss the 12S but now I get to take my wife with me sometimes 👍

Amazing! I've been trying to get hold of the 1980 R/80 GS and put it alongside my R9T Urban GS for a very similar video as they are incredibly alike as we know. Thanks for making this video, really enjoyed it and well done for getting hold of one :)

OMG, Scott, this is an awesome episode! Nothing gives you peace of mind like the bass sound of a BMW boxer engine! My first bike was a R50 in 1969 and after that (between 14 other bikes) I had a R75/5, a R100R Mystic and nowadays a R1200RS. This GS is a true masterpiece. You can call me a fanboy but I had enough other bikes and brands to know there’s more at the door. Anyway I know I will end up with a boxer, it feels and sounds like heaven! Thanks for this video!

Nice I have a 08/1980 R80 G/S which I also have road restored with the power 1000cc upgrade kit, quite an amazing 40 year old bike, great for riding loaded with camping gear and still feels light. Amazing that all parts are still available (apart from the speedo) which is fantastic.

Had one in the eighties when they were deeply unfashionable in a land of race reps. Had dinky little wobbly pods either side of the speedo for revs and clock. Loved it, particularly the casual lazy prod on the kickstarter that brought it to life.

I owned a brand new 90's model with blue seat. The best bike I ever had. 700 km a day with cases and passenger; a 24 L tank ; a good seat for two; a Paralever for improved handling. That's why I ride today a Royal Enfield Classic 500. Not the same sensations, but ...an easy and multi use machine to ride far too.

Todays bikes have so many things on them and are hence heavier. It was refreshing to ride a "big" ADV bike that's actually right around 200kg. 👍😁 But back in 1980, this was heavy for a class of bikes that didn't exist yet. take care, Scott

i know its a completely different bike/ concept, but from the same era you should ride a yamaha rd350lc 4lo..... that bike stops and goes just like a modern motorcycle, with the added 2 stroke fun...... they totally feel ahead of their time, and at less than 150kg thats light weight...... and its faster as well
@NotNowCato1254
@NotNowCato1254 3 жыл бұрын
Hey D R, I agree that the 4L0 350LC is an icon of the 80s - blew me away at the time, but it's a stretch to suggest they go and stop like a modern bike. Nowt wrong with that pokey sublime sounding engine but the willowy chassis, spindly forks and frankly appalling brakes were a nasty surprise when I tried one 30 years later! With hindsight it's only really the engine that was ahead of it's time. Always great fun though regardless.

@@hawkwood6405 I don't have a "Connection" to the bike like I did on my r1100gs' and the three 1150's... I doesn't sound like a "Boxer", there is too much "tech"- As an example- My TPS sensors need new batteries- so I ride with the idiot light flashing that there are issues with my tires... I prefer a real motorcycle experience like the oil/air cooled R-Boxers over the WC...
@hawkwood6405
@hawkwood6405 3 жыл бұрын
@@hankgs Fair enough. If I were you I'd replace my TPMS sensors (I know they don't give them away). The TPMS on my K1300s has saved my butt twice. It gives you warning, you can actually determine the rate of air loss and then plan your strategy accordingly. That is one of the new fangled features, along with ABS that I actually like. Having said that adventure bike tires are pretty puncture resistant compared to sport bike tires and rarely puncture if you are riding on the road.
