I’m the Garden Granny & work at a Garden Department. I just bought my first Ginseng Ficus Bonsai. She has been repotted into proper bonsai soil & shallow clay pot. I have her in an east facing window always inside. Arizona! I mist her at night & gave her a watering with R.O. & fish emulsion. She really liked that…Tomorrow my bonsai food comes. Thank you so much for making this. My first crack at bonsai was a ficus ginseng and it failed so badly (from lack of experience) that I had hesitated to try indoor bonsai again. Fast fwd 2 years and my wife received a ficus ginseng as a bday present and promptly handed it over saying, "you're the tree guy." Try zeolite instead of akadama in your ALP blend. See Kaisen bonsai in UK . I mix zeolite, lapillo (lava) and pumice then add a little bit of composted pine bark.

I love this video, because it takes time to explain some time scales. Could you make a video discuss this as an overal hobby. I'm brand new to this and one thing that no one seems to discuss is how ,long things take to happen and how often the trees need attending to. Other than watering daily, I mean how often do we repot, and why do we repot, How often to prune. How often to bend and shape. I understand this is different for each species. So let's give an example. I have four trees. Do I tend to them twice a year, once a month, once every 2 years? - I love your style of teaching and enjoyed every video on your channel so far. thank you so much for taking time to make these.

Time is but a reference. Summer time, check trees as much as possible. Water only when needed, stick finger in soil, if dry like pancake batter, needs water. Try to make your little tree into a bonsai, not your bonsai into a little tree. Roots are proportional to foliage. I’ve subscribed to at little repotting as possible. Trees spend years and years never moved, and in the sand dirt. Ehh not emulate that

My favorite bonsai material by far is ficus. Lived in Florida for many years and ficus do so well there. Just moved north so I will have to protect my trees for winter. F. Nerofolia and F. Retusa "tigerbark" are my two favorite. Both do great propagation from clippings.

Hey! Thank you Angelo! I'd advise getting a starter tree like a chinese elm or a ficus as they are easy to care for. Or even experiment with garden center material by wiring it and pruning. When it comes to species, research the specific care for each species, read forums, watch videos, join facebook groups and such! Almost everyone in the Bonsai communitys are very helpful and friendly 😄

Hi Dennis. Thank you for watching my video 😃 For ficus Benjamina I have found that it roots rather fast in water. With the ficus microcarpa it will take a little longer sometimes a few months. But don't give up on them! Remember to keep changing the water so it stays clean 😄 Hope this helps!

Can you do an update on these trees please?? Also, I am encouraged by your trip to the Wicklow Mountains a while back. I would like to do a forest bonsai but I want to make into like a fairy garden or some such. I really loved the rocks with all the moss and all the moss on the trees as well. Hi Kim! I haven't tried removing any of them before. It may be too stressful on the tree. Might be an experiment for the future! I find taking cuttings and allowing them to thicken creates a nicer tree 🙂

When you mix two different grits of soil together the finer grit will sink to the bottom. So i think you shouldve used less of the thicker grit at first in the pot, then in a seperate container mix the finer and thicker grit soil together and dump that in the pot upside down so your tree has that early access to the finer soil while transitioning to thicker as it matures. Then obviously your layer of finer soil to top it off. Im sure the tree will do well regardless, but its just a piece of advice for the future

I've never used wire, that's interesting. I have a ginseng ficus in my kitchen window. I have removed any yellow leaves near the base. I also trimmed off any thin dying branches. It has never been fertilized. Will Miracle-Gro work, and which kind should I get?

i had a really hard time finding a ficus locally that was not a "ginseng" ficus. so i bought the ginseng and cut the grafted thumb thick top off the big bulb of root stock. and planted it as a large cutting. now i have a real ficus bonsai on its own roots lol

Hey thanks! Keeping moss vibrant green can be a challenge! Moss typically thrives in shaded, moist environments. (Its so humid here in Ireland!) Ensuring consistent moisture without overwatering is key, spritzing it regularly or maintaining a humid environment helps. Adequate indirect sunlight is beneficial, but direct sun might dry it out. Proper airflow and keeping the surface clean from debris can also aid its health. Using moss-friendly fertilizers sparingly could help maintain its color. Experimenting with these factors might help revive or maintain the health of your moss!

Oh no! I'm sorry to hear about your Bonsai's sudden decline. It's possible that the repotting might have caused some stress to the plant, leading to leaf drop. Ensure that the tree is receiving adequate light, water, and humidity. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and place the bonsai in an area with bright, indirect sunlight. Be patient and give it some time to adjust to its new environment.

Hi. I've been struggling to find an answer to a bonsai question for months now, and I've now resorted to asking in the comments of random youtube videos about ficus. I have heard conflicting claims about what ficus trees can be grafted/fused together. Some have said that anything in the same genus will work. Others have told me that they need to be the same 'species', not saying anything about subspecies or cultivar differences. In your experience, how forgiving are taxonomical differences in ficus grafting? Specifically, I'm hopeful to try and graft oak leafed creeping fig to a larger bonsai, to give cascading and trunk-crawling foliage, but that benefits rather than harms the main tree. I know that grafting such a small stem to a larger tree is going to be a colossal challenge, but I'm up for trying. If it really is anything in the same genus, I can buy bonsai starters for very cheap, and just go with that. But if its species only, then I'm kinda stuck. Of course, there is such a thing, though rare, as full sized creeping fig bonsai. I'd rather have a slightly larger bonsai, and I'm not a fan of the cascading style they all use, but that would be a workable option. Except, I've heard another set of conflicting claims... I've heard a few times that Ficus Pumila Quercifolia isn't the correct scientific name for oak leafed creeping fig. I cannot seem to find it's real scientific name, but regardless, I'm now suspicious of its actual taxonomy. If you have any advice/knowledge on these topics, I would appreciate it very much.

Adam, I have a question about my ficus ginseng. I bought a larger one that has grafted branches, and I'm finding that the leaves are falling quite a bit. I am keeping it inside in a fairly well lit area, watering as needed etc. I'm wondering if planting it in a deeper pot next spring would help it establish more roots? And I'm wondering if I remove some of the grafted branches if that would help the tree? I'm not a fan of the grafted look it turns out! I'm totally new to bonsai, and have mainly been doing basic care for my bonsai trees, the most successful of which are my ficus ginseng, but this larger tree is relavitely new to my collection.

Hey! It's important to ensure proper care. The falling leaves may be caused by stress, inadequate light, overwatering, or sudden temperature changes. Provide indirect sunlight and avoid overwatering to promote healthy growth. Repotting in a deeper pot next spring with well-draining soil can help establish more roots and stability. If you're not a fan of the grafted branches you could try root a cutting from it and create a separate tree. Removing all of the graft and foliage may kill the tree as it needs leaves to keep it alive and I'm not sure it will back bud for you from the bulbous root!

Hey Ayan. You can really prune ficus all year round - Ideally you want to do your heavy pruning in spring though!

I don't use any brand in particular. I just find tools that are relatively cheap then spend more time refining the edge on them with sharpening tools! Although tools can help in Bonsai. I don't believe they are 100% essential to creating great trees. You can get by with a pair of branch cutters and ordinary garden scissors as long as they are nice and sharp!

There isn't a "repotting season" for ficus, especially if kept indoors. Otherwise very cool video. Enjoyed your content. You really know alot and are doing a great job. To be clear the consensus was to repot in the warmer months because most people move their trees outside in the warmer seasons, however if they are kept indoors it makes no difference. Unless kept in a really cold room compared to normal house temperatures.
