Such a wholesome video - thanks for sharing. I moved to Welly from Auckland at the start of the year and I've been loving it! I can't get enough of the walkability, coffee culture, and the unique little places everywhere.

@kyliec143 do you mind me asking where you're based in Wellington? I'm in Auckland and still very much in the "pipe dream" stage, thinking about leaving Auckland. Have always loved visiting Wellington though and great to hear you've made the same move and enjoying it! I think I'll do a bit more research!
@kyliec1435 ай бұрын
@@juliabrewster8599 I live in a very central apartment in the CBD along Willis St! I flat with a friend and we find that our living situation is affordable and perfect for us despite rents being slightly higher here than in suburbs. We don't own a car and rarely take public transit because we're able to walk everywhere, which meant that the travelling time and cost savings are enormous (considering how much money and time we spent sitting in traffic and parking in Auckland). As two young women, we find it enjoyable and safe to venture around throughout the city - and find that there's so much to see and do. For example, I can't get enough of the random events the Wellington City Council hosts that makes us feel like we're joining a strong and vibrant community. That being said, if you're not a fan of the idea of living right in the city, you still don't miss out by living in one of the suburbs. Suburbs aren't awfully spread out so they're pretty accessible by public transport, and they each seem to have their own unique charms. I think moving here was one of the best decisions I've ever made, and I've spent almost half my life living in Brisbane and other half in Auckland. I highly recommend it - but yes absolutely do the research to see if it's viable and feels right to you!

I’m American and have been living in Wellington for the last 7 years. (My house is right behind the gardens!) I always say Wellington is a great city to live but not a good tourist destination but this was really refreshing to see someone’s first visit with a fresh perspective. Highly recommend a trip to staglands next time you’re in the area!

The reason the roads are so narrow is because the city plots were originally planned and sold in London to settlers who had no idea how hilly the area was. The narrow streets ended up a necessity if they wanted to make the land plots they sold work.

right now wellington is going through a bad period due to rent, pipes, drop in cultural events etc. Welsh bar used to be a restaurant out Island bay. Botanical gardens after dark go to the stream and you can gently pick a leaf and look at glow worms. Spacesuit is owned by exflatmate it was gonna gave a russian spacesuit but that fell through.

New Zealand cities and suburbs are very "American similar" according to many tourists that have visited or lived in both. That's probably why many American based TV shows and movies are shot here, it's cheaper and easier and looks very similar.

A well put together video and 'first impressions' is not an inaccurate title...understood not a lot of time was spent there so it's a pretty superficial assessment... a few things to consider: don't expect a shopping mecca - Lambton Quay what was the main retail area is pretty much dead not a lot here to be found you won't see in a suburban mall (which in themselves in NZ is a pretty restricted set of options), Cuba St has it's charms but the thrift stores/op shops are generally expensively framed as 'vintage clothing' there are a few OK cafes though the hospo scene has been in decline for some time...Courtney Place wasn't touched on as the main entertainment area - a good thing possibly as it's pretty awful. It's acknowledged that Wellington as a whole is now pretty dangerous and it would be naive to think otherwise. It's also an expensive proposition even compared with other cities in NZ. But agree the waterfront and remaining wooden houses of Mt Vic are nice on a good day...

It's nice, but it's pipeline infrastructure is in need of serious investment. Sewerage bursting into the harbour, and multiple water leaks doesn't help. That, and a ineffective council.
