So glad i grew up in Wellington in the 90s and 2000s before liquor laws/fun police/leftie governments ruined this amazing city

The council are trying to discourage anyone from coming into the city unless on a bike or bus . So parents with young families, contractors, people who cannot use public transport because it isn’t convenient or exist in there area are basically not welcome . Stay in your suburb and go to your local mall.
@voulafisentzidis88307 күн бұрын
As a Wellingtonian I agree that the Council doesn't want cars in town. Unfortunately, public transport isn't cost-effective, reliable, or frequent enough to utilise. Wellington is still the best, despite its problems.

I think if you asked Kiwis what their capital is, at least 90% would say Wellington, but I totally agree that most Kiwis wouldn't know Canberra is the capital of Australia (it is a pretty random place, with nothing much going on but parliament, but I believe that was because every state wanted the capital there, and no-one could agree, so they created a new town 😂). So glad NZ said "thanks, but no thanks" to becoming a state of Australia, back in the day! Also, Russell was the first capital of NZ, and Dunedin also was the capital before Auckland got anywhere near it. Wellington works perfectly as our capital because it's right in the middle of the country (and it's a bloody brilliant and beautiful city - love it there!) ❤

Hey just a heads up that what you thought of as the university is not at all! the actual campus of both Massey and Victoria universeity are in Kelburn and Mt Cook. What youre seeing is an extended resource of it. I cant tell you what the building is. I can tell you its definitly not the university campus
@juliaforsyth83324 ай бұрын
The first building you thought was Parliament is the Court buildings. Also the big wooden building is the Law Faculty for Victoria University( Wellington Uni). The actual Uni is up in Kelburn. I don't know if you went up on the Cable Car, but halfway up you would've seen the main old brick building of Victoria Uni. The Railway Station is Art Deco built in 1932, I think. I definitely know what the Bundestag is. I hope to go to Germany in 5 years time to see where my family came from. As a kid I used to take the red diesal bus up Cuba Street to the Zoo. Cost sixpence!

Dunedin had 'street art' *way* before Christchurch or Wellington. As always, we get left out, but we are a small city 😓 Te Papa is the best. I lived in Wellington when they moved the whole Museum Hotel (wasn't called that then!) across the road to make room to build Te Papa - I think there were about 20 massive trucks involved, all perfectly synchronised. It was incredible to watch - never seen anything like it! ❤

I wouldn’t say way before Wellington. They have always had street art around being the cultural and arts capital of NZ

A museum must-see for Mado. If you're in the Taranaki area near Hawera time is well spent by visiting the Tawhiti Museum. It's a small, privately-owned museum and the work of an enthusiast and has such cool things inside. Lots of displays of NZ life in settler days and miniature dioramas depicting Maori life in the pa, the Maori land wars plus the early whaling days. There's a gift shop at the entrance, the little steam train might be running - depends on various factors - and last time we visited there was a nice little cafe called Mr Badger's. It would be a shame to leave the country without seeing it but you'll have to be quick and check the website for opening days and hours as they're about to switch over to winter hours at the end of May. Maybe give them a call. In my opinion it's right up there with the best museums in the country.

Great vlog as always guys. Antipodean Capitals ! :) Both New Zealand & Australia, you could ask a cross selection of people walking the street anywhere, "What's the Capital City of Australia ?" How many say Sydney ( not Canberra) ? Where it used to be Melbourne ! :) Many would say Auckland for New Zealand, not Wellington. Back in the day, it WAS Auckland ! 🙉 🐦

Good blog again. I've been to the parliament which was a great experience. Wellington is where i was born and raised. Also been to the Bundestag. When i wanted directions i asked a local where the Reichstag was? Many times I'd hitch-hiked home to Porirua from at the side of the station after the last train. Very dangerous as you were usually given a lift by a guy who was twice as drunk as you.

The Truth about Wellington ,it's windy as hell & cold i lived there for 5 years in the mid 80's but was real easy to get a job well back then it was the people were great & pay rate was good too a lot of money to be made there back them days ,good hard workers were rewarded i was from the coast & had been a bushman so i did tree felling & limbing on the weekends for extra cash all the hard jobs local tree guys didn't want or couldnt do or wanted a fortune for the job i even did jobs for DOC & they & people loved me & my prices & firewood was so easy to sell i made a killing from it ,but real estate & rentals were crazy prices but i made enough in 5 years to buy a house & land back down the coast .So any budding entrepreneurs out there i recommend for that .

For the parliament tours, if you go on the 3pm tour on the days where the Prime Minister is giving his press conferences to the Press Gallery after cabinet meetings (not sure what days those are) at 4pm, you can generally get to meet him as he has to go through the reception area to get to the press conference room and he stops to talk to people on tours.

Wellington has had a succession of very poor city councilors/mayors. They are deliberately making it less car friendly as they think people should cycle and use public transport. A vocal minority support this, whereas the rest suffer as parking is removed and replaced with underused cycle ways. The public transport is not cheap and regular enough to compensate for this.
