Happy birthday to toots he would have been 100 today I remember hearing about him a long time ago but I just didn't pay attention to it

I had the great pleasure to talk with him a few years back in Hollywood CA.at a jazz club called Catalina`s Bar and Grill, when i found out he was going to be there i decided to get there early,no one there yet except him, so i sat at one of the tables when all of a sudden this wonderful man passes in front of me as he walks towards the bar to get an expresso and when comes back he stops right in front of me and he says"thank you for coming" and that`s when the best 25 minutes of my life started

At the age of 11 I first heard Toots, and when my mother asked me what I wanted for Christmas, my only request was a harmonica. After all these years, as I am now 60, I still love Toots and the harmonica. He is truly a master and one of the greatest exponents of the instrument.

Teddy Bear Toots is gone... but he leaves us a huge gift of his talents for us to enjoy. I recall the day he came knocking at our door, all excited that he had successfully completed composing a great tune, complete with lyrics that was about to become a hit, back in '61, while he lived in the same apartment building as we did in Yonkers, NY. I'm in tears now but so grateful we got to know him.

Oh, wow! I can't believe that is a harmonica!! how have I gone my whole life without hearing this man play? I probably have heard him on a dozen soundtracks, playing with this or that artist I DID know, and having developed a palate, passion and appreciation of music late in life, I keep my KZbin subscription paid up so I can keep tripping over these unseen rocks at dusk, only to find they are brilliant and rare gems that I will now hunt for, and appreciate for the rest of MY life. For every grumble I have about the internet or what social media is turning people into, There are 100 more positive experiences out there just waiting to be found. I mas a manager of a print shop, and on Saturdays the local Public Radio station would play 2 hours of American Routes. It exposed me to music I didn't know existed. I heard it, and I immediately could pick out which artists had been influenced by this of that artist, and some who had been pillaged and plundered. I learned about Bluegrass, and Real Country music, like Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, not Garth Brooks and Faith Hill country. (Nothing wrong if you like what I call Bedazzled Country, it's just not my cup of whiskey-laced tea.) Over the course of 2 hours, (2 1 hour shows) I would learn so much, and people would come and ask, what radio station is that?! It's available on-line, since my doofus station removed the show from their schedule. It's funny. When I was married, I was always kind of stiff around my MIL and SIL. No particular reason, though I've always wondered if I might be just ever so slightly on the Asperger's end of the autism spectrum. My Parent Teacher meetings invariable went like this: Your daughter is a wonderful student. She always does her work, she gets good grades, she loves to read. We often see her by herself under a tree reading instead of playing with the other kids. Very smart, but a bit of a loaner." Little did I know that with about a 10 year exception, that was going to sum me up perfectly. Anyway, I only mention it because I always had such a hard time speaking to my MIL. We had no commonality, including her son because he never would talk about himself or his childhood. He could be summed up by the word, "Sociopath." It's a term I wish I'd learned more about during all those hours of reading. But, when we were driving around, and American Routes came on, she was all over that! We had finally found something that we could both love and even, finally have something to talk about. My (ex) in-laws are all wonderful, beautiful, kind, and accepting people whom I still care a great deal for, despite the nuclear holocaust that was my marriage. Anyway, great music, really glad I pursued this doodle and I can enjoy his music for whatever time I have left.
