Absolutely beautiful! Notre Dame is without a doubt my favourite piece of architecture on the planet. It's such a glorious part of French culture! Now I'm certain this took time and effort but I assure you, good sir, that it was most certainly worth it to create such a masterpiece! To think, this was made on Survival Mode too! I salut you good sir, this is incredible.

A gorgeous, respectably made cathedral and one indicative of true attention to architectural detail. I can only hope the one I'm creating comes out with with the elegance that yours has. Also, possibly the best version of Toccata and Fugue in D Minor I've ever heard, and seeing as it's been a favorite of mine since 5, that's saying something. Bravissimo.

Indeed, after I started this project, my friend showed me Pillars of the Earth, and since my name is also Tom, TomBuilder seemed particularly fitting. Just like Tom from the book/miniseries, I love cathedrals. After a long Minecraft hiatus, I've begun work on a new, even more massive project--St. Paul's Cathedral. Check back in several months.

@Bunters196 Nope, there is no wool at all. The different shadings of stone are all caused by different layers/depths of the rock faces. Rocks deeper into the wall end up a little darker b/c of the lighting, etc.

@Nudekwood Minecraft is not free, but you can play an older and more limited version for free. The full game costs about $21 USD right now. It's still technically in beta, and it gets a lot of updating (and, eventually, I believe the final price will be higher).

in in the process of copying this myself, idk if ill ever finish it, like you im doing it in survival. the key difference is that in doing it underground starting at y=5, itll have a glass dome over it as well. the final hole will be 80 by 160. only about 800,00 blocks to remove before i even start, but hey, ill have the stone needed

@EvilBharathy Actually, most of the stone came from just digging up the grounds to a low enough level so the cathedral would fit into the map, given the height limit et al.

Lovely work! I built a cathedral in single player (multiplayer always crashed) based on the floorplan of Amiens cathedral. It's close to 1:1 scale but beyond the floor layout and dimensions it's pretty much out of my own head. Like yours, I had to leave off the central spire due to map height limits! I can't link here but searching for minecraft cathedral on google should show my deviantart link on the first page. :)

@faraskan Thank you! I died many, many times. But it was humorous, so I was entertained by it. Probably the most aggravating death I had was when I was collecting lava with 30+ buckets deep in a mine for the obsidian floor tiling, and I fell into the lava and lost most of my buckets. I started the cathedral at the beginning for February 2011, and playing regularly finished by the end of March 2011. I really don't have more specific numbers for how many hours it took.

I am both flattered and humored that people like this so much that they want to figure out how to build it themselves but find my plans insufficient. Let me note that my plans were never intended to be instructions for other people; they were only for me. Yet, I do want to help accommodate anyone who wants to build it too, so I will upload a portfolio of my own screenshots to help guide you this weekend. Also, I still have not forgotten about uploading the map itself. I will do so soon.

@soldathick I never actually paid any attention to what the height of each of the levels were. I simply build a column of dirt in the air to determine how much space I had to work with prior to construction. As to 129, I'm afraid I don't have an answer--that's just how it is on our server I guess.
@LarcenousDesigns
@LarcenousDesigns 13 жыл бұрын
@UserNamei5 It's 1:1 based on the Minecraft measurement of 1 block = 1 yard on a side. Of course it isn't perfect--but it's as close as you get in Minecraft. And walking around inside, you certainly feel like you're in a giant cathedral. Download the world file and try it out!
@Temeraire519
@Temeraire519 13 жыл бұрын
@moonbender100 what exactly are you going on about? I never said it wasn't amazing or that I don't like it. I simply feel that without the spire it's missing a huge part of it and should be considered incomplete, which by the way it is. Also I would like to point out I'm not blaming anyone for this, its just not complete. The plain and simple reason I feel this way is because this is my all time favourite cathedral and is arguably the finest example of gothic french architecture.

@gageman34 Well, one point I can bring up that many people get wrong when building a Minecraft cathedral is that the triangular roof and the ceiling of the nave are not that same thing. The ceiling of the nave, transepts, and choir is a collection of multiple intersecting arches called "ribbed vaulting." I portrayed this vaulting as best as I could using the confines of the blocks I had. Take a look at different photographs of various gothic cathedrals to see what I mean.

@BigBadSchutt thanks. I was wondering on the front on view is the dark blocks above the door cobblestone? Luckily i've been using refined lol. I've also been getting a sore head from the amount of stupid mistakes i've been making just by misscounting and rushing. Had to lay the first layer 3 times already.... all because of one block each time.

@bobaethan Actually, I built it myself. The special thanks are mostly to my close friends on the server who donated some stone, wood, and coal and who helped with some landscaping. :D
@ThomasSchutt
@ThomasSchutt 13 жыл бұрын
@Temeraire519 I was incapable of building the spire in Minecraft. The map has a height limit: the western towers are already at max height, and the spire is supposed to be well higher than them. The only way I could have built the spire was to dig 30 layers or so into the ground so I'd have more vertical space, but then the whole cathedral would have been surrounded by walls of dirt and stone which would have looked far, far worst than a missing spire. Don't blame me; blame Notch.

@BigBadSchutt oh i think i've worked it out its slate yeah? And on the blueprints are the dark blocks cobble and the light grey smoothstone? Just double checking and some other people were saying they needed a legend/key as well.

@Bunters196 Ah yes, I see what you're asking now. Yes, I used many half-blocks too, created from refined stone. Almost everything in the plans is simple, refined stone. I barely used cobblestone at all--only for a few minor surface textures here and there. When in doubt, assume that what you are looking at in the plans is refined stone, not cobblestone. What you see in the plans is what I've got, too--there is nothing extra. The plans were only written for me, so they are hard to read.

@Pokeyman123 Sadly I have found several people do this already. If you would like point out where they did this, I may have my Minecraft group take action. Or if you just want to discredit them for me, that's fine too. Recently I am more happy to have released the map for free download, knowing that many are enjoying my cathedral in game. Suffering copyright violators is a small price to pay for that joy. :)

@crossfirepremier The cathedral itself requires 138 x 55 meters, however, I needed to landscape about four times that space to give it a landscape worth of it. All the landscaping I did was done by hand too. I'm planning on building a town in front of it, however I'm waiting for 1.8 to come out b/c my server will likely be altered for it, so I'll work on it more then.

@Nudekwood Did one person do it by themselves, in a couple months, with zombies and creepers attacking them? ;-) The deal is that this is cool, in Minecraft terms. If it's not your thing, no worries. But a lot of Minecrafters find megastructure creation a lot of fun, and this is a pretty hardcore one from our server.

@FSLetsPlay Your assumption that Notre Dame's western facade is completely symmetrical is false. I executed my design as such intentionally. :) I'm afraid I don't have written out instructions for how the pieces of the building fit together, only the basic shapes that you can use as your framework. If you watch the video a few times, I think you'll figure out how it is supposed to fit together if you wish to build it yourself.
