This was actually even more genius than people are realizing. Ordinarily, if you put a sub in the game, they have to play at least one snap, you can't send them on and then run them off straight away. BUT that rule doesn't apply if the officials stop play for a review, which is what happened here. Notre Dame running their entire punt team off like that would ordinarily not have been legal...Kirby was yelling from the sidelines "you can't do that, you can't do that" and he also stated in the press conference afterward that SEC refs had told him in the past that it would be illegal. But Freeman knew the rule about the review exception and Kirby didn't and it won them the game.
@davidwebb2332Күн бұрын
To carry that point forward, it is legal when any stoppage of play is granted. Plus the substitution rule applies after the ready for play signal is given, which is when the play clock began.
@gwhite7136Күн бұрын
Won it? I'd say it merely iced it for them. UGA's offense was never going to score twice in that time remaining even if ND punted it. But man, what a high IQ heads up call by Freeman. I been watching college ball for over 40 years and this play is extremely rare and rarely excecated this flawlessly. Freeman know the rule book better than Kirby? Sure seems that way. Must have just taken the SEC refs for their word about it instead of actually reading it himself.. lol
@TomG1555Күн бұрын
@@davidwebb2332 So basically, if they'd run the punt team back out there again, that would have been a penalty since the offensive team that was subbed in wouldn't have run a play? Also, can't wait for another team to try to replicate this without understanding the subtleties of the rulebook loophole, get flagged for illegal substitution, then complaining that "Notre Dame did it, so why are you penalizing us?"

There was nowhere near as much parity before. We needed NIL for this format to even be halfway justified, and I still don't think 12 teams was a good idea. Based on this week, it's entirely possible the bye left the resting teams rusty while the teams coming off the first round were still sharp and in game rhythm. I don't think any clearly inferior teams won or anything, but we got maybe the worst showing of the season from three out of four bye teams, and I personally feel robbed of good football. In other words, this format is fluky as hell, and I don't feel any more satisfied than with the four team format.

I think the 12 team system has shown two very obvious things so far: 1. The winners of each conference should not get an automatic bye, there is no reason Boise State should have been a top seed with a bye. 2. 12 teams is either too many or not enough. Either take it down to 8 or bring it up to 16. Either way it eliminates the problem of having a bye week and too much time off. NCAA is all about money so they will only ever expand to 16.
@jerodjohnson7240Күн бұрын
Who do you think should of been in, I'm curious.
@pdureska7814Күн бұрын
The only reason they have 12 instead of 8 (and you know they will expand to 16) is to silence people sitting at #9 and #10 in the arbitrary poll rankings complaining that they deserved to be in instead of one of the teams sitting at #7 and 8. I dont like the arbitrary byes given to the "presumed top 4 seeds". They should go to a 16 team playoff and every team plays. The fact remains that if you are outside of the top 5 or 6 teams you likely are not winning the Natty. Now i think there could be a team that say loses their star QB or has a rash of injuries and loses a couple of games early but then comes on like gangbusters at the end of the season and finishes with 2 losses but ends up winning the championship. Maybe that team is ranked in the 6 to 10 range and might get left out of an eight team playoff. I just dont like arbitrarily assigning 4 teams a bye which despite the results this year i think is a huge advantage from the standpoint of injury recovery and team preparation. i would say if they go to 16 teams, anyone ranked in the 13 to 16 range have no shot at winning a title (they could pull a first round upset.. but not run the table).

Don’t worry, as a Georgia fan, they were never in danger of losing this game 😂

I won't say it was a good game, exactly, but it was an interesting game. I saw an undisciplined Georgia team get outplayed while its coach got outsmarted. I won't say this is typical Kirby Smart, but I've always felt that Smart has relied on high-end talent more than strategy or solid fundamentals, at least in comparison to his mentor, Nick Saban. Smart has been lucky to lead Georgia in the SEC super league era of high-flying offenses. I don't think he would have had any success in the SEC in the 2000s or early-to-mid 2010s. Even though he was Saban's DC for years, I've never seen evidence in Smart's Georgia tenure that he is a defensive genius or that his strategy goes beyond having the best skill position players on the gridiron (and trying his best to keep them from being arrested). Kudos to Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame. I've watched a few Notre Dame games this season and seen a much better coached team than the previous couple of years (which makes me wonder how exactly they botched that Northern Illinois game). It appears that Freeman is becoming a better coach as he gains more experience and learns from his (numerous) early mistakes. Definitely a novelty in either college or pro football for a coach not to double down on his own screw-ups.

Good comments. I thought Notre Dame had plenty of undisciplined moments too, especially with penalties - I didn't even know the defense could get a delay of game, but they managed to get called for that. But definitely an interesting game, and as an Irish fan I was pleased with the outcome.

ND is going to get blasted by PSU if their offense looks the same way. They can’t rely on special teams to win like this every game. UGA just didn’t have an offense. PSU does.

You give Ga. an extra 5 days to prep and then Kirby displayed the acts of a rookie coach. This could be the beginning of the end for Ga, let alone Alabama and Tennessee. Just shows nothing last forever ,but when Sabin left and transfer portals became hot it has created parody.

He wasn’t trying to run into him on purpose, that’s a dishonest take. Obviously no one is reading his mind, but Defenses legitimately try to block punts. That’s how the game works.

I wonder why college doesn't have the NFL rule alowing the defensive team time to sub in players when the offence makes a subsitution

They do. That is why you see umpire on the ball preventing the snap and only when defense has substituted too, umpire comes off the ball.

interestingly, Kirby's most obvious bad decision was in 2nd quarter, punting on 4th and 3 from the UGA 45. That's 'go for it' territory. Every possession was critical and he punted it away. Not even the announcers pointed out that he should have gone for it. In the 3rd qtr, UGA had 4th and 3 on their own 39, and punted. This one is more iffy--but in a really tight game where you have the size/strength advantage (maybe not quickness), they should have considered going for this one also. UGA's defense did a good job. Offense didn't do much of anything and punting on these 4th and 3 situations definitely doesn't show much confidence in the offense.
