On 15 April 2019, the fire at Paris' Notre-Dame caused international emotion after the blaze brought its towering spire and roof crashing to the ground, wiping out centuries of priceless heritage central to French culture and history. Two years later, the work to make the cathedral safe finished. RFI visited the cathedral at that time.

I live in a nursing home. I remember sitting with my then roommate on that day, Tax Day! (in US) and watching in horrified fascination as this historic church slowly burned. I knew it was wrong but I couldn't stop looking and I don't think I was alone. I think it was harder for my roommate because she was Roman Catholic. Many prayers for the people involved in this extraordinary work.

I can't believe it's two years already. I know how much care they are taking with the restoration but I'm still glad I saw her a few times before the fire. However, for all the years she's been here it goes to show she is a living thing, and change will come. Here's to another 900 years.

Thank you all for your dedicated work to restore this beauty. I had the great fortune to visit Notre Dame in 1975 when there were few tourists and I was able to linger and study all the incredible detail created by artist-craftsmen so long ago. I've been able to revisit Paris multiple times since and Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower along with the walk between along the Seine are always on my must revisit list. When the cathedral is once again open to visitors I will endure the crowd and once again take in its great beauty and splendor.

Oak-trees are extremely common in French forests ,the 1000 trees necessary for the restoration have already been felled .Contrary to the beam structure above the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles ,nothing was special about the length of the trunks used for Notre-Dame ,the reason which made its roofing so special was the fact that it was still the original 13 th C oak structure .

Too bad for them, the climate-tax bag is full of easy money literally growing on trees.

I visited Notre Dame in July 1985. When I saw she was burning I cried and panicked. I knew how old she was and what a fire could do. I am so thrilled to see the progress being made but look forward to seeing the first mass in the church. You could probably sell tickets and put it on pay per view with the money going to finish the restoration.

My wife tried really hard to persuade me into entering the cathedral 5 minutes before the fire started, she had never been inside it before. But I wasn’t fund of the idea as we had been walking around Paris the entire day. Usually I give up, but I had a weird feeling that told me to absolutely not enter. So instead we took the bus to St. Lazare, she was dissappointed, and just when we stepped into the bus all people went ”Oh mon dieu” and as we looked back there was lots of smoke coming out of the cathedral. A couple of minutes later it was all over the news. When we took the train from St. Lazare, we could see the smoke from kilometers away. It was my first visit to Paris in years and the first night the firealarm went in our hotel in the middle of the night, so we had to all run out in pyjamas. I’ll never forget my visit to Paris that year.

@@willchristie2650 Some amateur. Needs education on how to evacuate downed (and preferably on fire) airplane with all the on-board belongings with them, peacefully taking detailed photos of the scene for sale to National Geographic series "Mayday". People actually do this (and survive!) I suspect some of the passengers deliberately stay behind to grab belongings left by those in panic. "Accidental Hero" comes to mind. Just joking. Although it is a good habit to be prepared in any case, to know the emergency exits, to be able to blindly grab prepared in advance most important things on the way out.

I visited NOTRE DAME the first time on about March 7th 1966 and the 2nd time at the middle of June 1967 one year later as leader of a youth group.. My French friend Roland took me there. After the fire, a survey was done in France. About 80 % believed that it was arson. because it is almost impossible to start a fire on wood when the wood is several 100 years old. There are many churches vandalized every year in France, NOTRE DAME was no exception

Actually it is rather almost impossible NOT to have a fire start with centuries-old-wood ,which is so dry it catches fire like matches do.And it is the reason why this cathedral was among the rare ones,if not the only one,to have saved its gothic beam structure. As for "the many churches vandalized every year in France",could you just name a few ?

The malfeasant roof work, including the use of torches, which ignited this catastrophe remains unaddressed by anyone (that I can read of) at this point. Roof work on an 800 year old dry oak ceiling.....with live fire devices in use throughout the day, and smoking workers, and NOONE insisted for insurance reasons that SOMEONE remain on site, 24/7/365 until the work was safely completed? The many billions of Euros to be lovingly lavished on this bald and burned out hulk of a cathedral could have been entirely saved and spent on truly more pressing matters had one senior monsigneur in the Diocese of Paris decided to spend 1000 Euros a day until the work was safely completed. I watched the spire topple back in April 2015 and this remains, in my mind, a capital offense against world culture. A sad day for all of us, and that France allowed this to happen is unspeakable. Malfeasance to the skies!

The stunning beauty and the historical significance of Paris is something the entire world should feel ownership in. We are blessed with its existence. At 16 seconds the Architect walks with his arms behind his back along the Seine, I believe was used in a scene for the movie "Les Miserables" released in 1998. I still remember the scene with Liam Neeson (playing Jean Valjean) and Geoffrey Rush. (Playing Inspector Javert). The history of France is filled with Passion, drama and heroic acts of its citizens. Notre Dame De Paris is a glorious symbol of those things.
